Tovar's homer in 8th inning propels Rockies past Orioles 6-5 for Colorado's 5th win in 7 games
It's a rare run of success for the Rockies, who improved to 27-76 on the season but still need 15 wins to avoid matching the modern record of 121 losses by last year's Chicago White Sox. Colorado rallied from a 4-0 deficit after Jordan Westburg, Tyler O'Neill, Coby Mayo and Alex Jackson hit solo homers for Baltimore in the first two innings.
Mickey Moniak hit a solo shot in the third for the Rockies and Thairo Estrada added a two-run homer in the fourth.
Colorado took the lead in the fifth when Hunter Goodman hit an RBI double and then scored on Jordan Beck's single. Jackson Holliday tied it for the Orioles with an RBI single in the seventh off Rockies reliever Jake Bird (4-1).
Tovar answered with a one-out drive off Andrew Kittredge (1-2), and the Rockies held on. Seth Halvorsen worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 13 chances.
Colorado and Baltimore — both in last place in their respective divisions — traded players to New York before the game. The Rockies sent infielder Ryan McMahon
to the Yankees
, and the Orioles dealt reliever Gregory Soto
to the Mets
.
Key moment
O'Neill led off the eighth with a double, but Tyler Kinley retired the next three hitters — two via strikeout — to protect the one-run lead.
Key stat
Baltimore remains the only team in the major leagues without a walk-off victory in 2025.
Up next
Trevor Rogers (3-1, 1.74 ERA) starts for the Orioles on Saturday night against Colorado's Antonio Senzatela (4-13, 6.41).

2025-26 training camp: Rockets to open with September 29 media day
In what may serve as a de facto introductory press conference for Kevin Durant, the Rockets will host their annual media day on Monday, September 29. In what could be an introductory press conference of sorts for Kevin Durant, the Houston Rockets are expected to host their 2025-26 media day on Monday, September 29. The dates are publicly available on the NBA's website. Coincidentally, that September 29 date will be Durant's 37th birthday. Training camp will likely open the following day, September 30, with the preseason opener scheduled for a week later on October 6. Opening night for the Rockets could come as soon as October 21, with complete regular-season schedules to be released by the league office later this month. Because Durant was acquired in July and the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) does not mandate media availabilities in the offseason, the 15-time All-Star has yet to speak with reporters in Houston. While it's still possible that a press conference could occur earlier, nothing has been scheduled, and NBA personnel often spend the weeks immediately prior to camp traveling or spending time with their inner circle — i.e. family or close friends that they can't see as often during the season. In many cases, this requires traveling out of market. In a recent interview, Rockets veteran Dorian Finney-Smith referenced an unofficial team mini-camp being held in September, which could further tighten this year's schedule. Media day consists of interviews with each NBA team's key players, coaches, and executives, who are asked to share perspectives about the season ahead. Because Durant's media day interview will undoubtedly consist of questions about his new team in Houston, that might be another incentive for him to wait — since he will likely be addressing the same types of topics, regardless of whether he does an earlier event. After previous superstar acquisitions, such as Dwight Howard in the 2013 offseason and Chris Paul in 2017, the Rockets held offseason events featuring both a press conference with reporters and an opportunity for the player to directly engage with the fan base. It's a safe assumption that the team would have loved to capitalize on the Durant buzz with a similar engagement event, but the team cannot mandate his appearance in a period without games. It comes down to the player's availability, and there haven't been many indications of Durant physically being in Houston this offseason. The Rockets have yet to announce locations or times for media day or training camp. Last season, media day took place inside the team's home arena of Toyota Center, while training camp was held at the team's newly constructed practice complex in Houston. ESPN Analyst Gives Nuggets Excellent Offseason Grade After Multiple Moves
ESPN Analyst Gives Nuggets Excellent Offseason Grade After Multiple Moves originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It has been a busy offseason for the Denver Nuggets as they have made multiple changes to their roster to chase another championship next season. Of course, the Nuggets have been eliminated in the second round of the playoffs over the last two seasons after winning the title behind Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon in 2023. Denver began the offseason by trading Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cameron Johnson as they added a three-point sharpshooter to their lineup and also freed up cap space. With their extra cap space, the Nuggets signed Tim Hardaway Jr. and reunited with Bruce Brown, who played a key role for them during their championship run in 2023, while also landing Jonas Valanciunas from the Sacramento Kings for Dario Saric. With these moves, ESPN's Kevin Pelton gave the Nuggets an A- offseason grade. 'After the dust cleared, Denver's offseason resulted in the strongest Nuggets team on paper since they won the 2023 title, highlighted by swapping Michael Porter Jr. for Cameron Johnson at the cost of a valuable 2032 unprotected first-rounder,' Pelton wrote. Pelton makes a great point about how the Nuggets' roster looks to be the best they have had since their championship season in 2023. Of course, the Nuggets have struggled with their bench unit over the past few seasons but with the additions of Hardaway Jr., Valanciunas and Brown, they clearly made it a priority to upgrade their depth this summer. While that may be the case, they will likely not be bringing back Russell Westbrook who played a key role for them off the bench last season. Because of this, the Nuggets do lack a true backup point guard, though Brown could fill that role next season. With these moves, the Nuggets will now enter next season as a clear contender in the Western Conference with Jokic leading the way as they try to capitalize on another championship. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Colts have many questions to answer in preseason
Colts have many questions to answer in preseason originally appeared on The Sporting News The Colts kick off their preseason schedule in a matter of hours. Before Indianapolis takes the field in Baltimore for their preseason opener against the Ravens, they have a plethora of questions they must get answers to during this warm-up period before games begin to matter. CBS Sports's Cody Benjamin named the Colts among one of eight teams who need preseason the most, citing quarterback uncertainty and defensive injuries as the main reasons why. Benjamin posed three important questions: Can Anthony Richardson stay upright and showcase improved accuracy as a passer for coach Shane Steichen, reclaiming his job as the top quarterback? Can Daniel Jones earn a new lease on a first-team gig by outdoing Richardson as a more efficient operator of the preseason offense? How will new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo sort out a secondary currently battling injuries to Charvarius Ward, Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents? So far in training camp, Richardson has shown significant improvement with his accuracy, especially in the short areas of the field where he struggled in 2024. But the practice field is a much different environment than a game. Richardson has to show he can translate his behind-the-scenes work into success on the gridiron. As for Daniel Jones, he's done exactly what he came to Indianapolis to do— compete. While Richardson will be the starter Thursday night, Jones will see action before getting the start against Green Bay Aug. 16. If Jones can be more efficient when it's all said and done, he could edge out Richardson for the opening day start against the Dolphins. Defensively, Anarumo has his work cut out for him in the secondary. Ward has returned to practice, but rookie Justin Walley has now been sidelined with a knee injury, meaning this preseason will be vital, especially if Brents, Jones and Justin Walley remain sidelined for a prolonged period. If so, Anarumo needs to identify the right depth pieces who can fill in alongside while his preferred choices work their way back.
