Huawei unveils Pura 80 series smartphones with innovative camera
Chinese tech giant Huawei launched its Pura 80 smartphone series as it takes on the competition for camera photography prowess.
The company launched the new smartphones, including the Huawei MatePad 11.5 tablet, on a hot Thursday evening in Dubai, UAE.
Huawei's launch comes a day after Samsung launched its new Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 7 series, as the drive to gain market share intensifies.
Pura 80
Originally rebranded in 2024, the Pura series combines avant-garde design with high-performance mobile technology and photography.
One of the standout features of the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is the onboard artificial intelligence (AI), which allows the phone to process images using AI without the need for internet connectivity or data.
The Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Ultra versions are equipped with a 1-inch Ultra Lighting HDR camera.

Switchable camera
Paired with the pixel-level colour calibration of the Ultra Chroma Camera, it delivers clear photos with remarkably accurate colour reproduction.
Notably, the Pura 80 Ultra introduces the industry-first Switchable Dual Telephoto Camera, combining a large sensor with a dual telephoto lens for capturing clear shots at any distance.
Photography
Huawei CBG Peter Feng told The Citizen the Pura 80 series is defining the future of mobile imaging.
'We are not only providing the AI functionality when it comes to the camera. When it comes to the Pura 80 Ultra, it has a switchable dual lens. We put more than 140 precision components inside. So, it's very precise.
'This is a very powerful camera system because we can support this on the device with physical activity and functionality to give you the best shot ever before,' Feng said.
Tablet
With the convergence of education and technology, Huawei said the MatePad 11.5 is designed for both ambitious students and professionals entering the workforce.
It has a 2.5K resolution with PaperMatte display, housed in an ultra-thin 6.1 mm frame, powered by a 10,100 mAh battery. There is also the M-Pencil (3rd generation), which introduces magnetic wireless charging.
Pricing and availability
Huawei said pricing for the Pura 80 series smartphones and MatePad 11.5 will be announced soon.
South Africa will be getting the Pura 80 Pro and Ultra, which will be available in black gold and red.
The new devices are expected to be available in South Africa from 7 August.
Restrictions
With the launch of the new Huawei Pura 80 series, Huawei is seeking to cement its comeback in China and global premium smartphone market following years of US sanctions.
The Pura 80 series launch demonstrates Huawei's continued efforts to reclaim the top spot ahead of Samsung, Apple and Honour, who have gained significant market share due to the lack of Google services as a result of US sanctions.
Each new smartphone launch from Huawei is closely watched as a barometer of the company's technological capabilities and market resilience following years of restrictions that severely impacted its smartphone business.

Chinese scholarships awarded to South African students
The Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, and the Chinese Embassy hosted a send-off ceremony for South African students who have been awarded Chinese government scholarships for 2025. Image: Oupa Mokoena / Independent Newspapers The Chinese Embassy in Pretoria hosted a send-off ceremony on Tuesday to celebrate South African students who received 2025 Chinese government scholarships, highlighting the importance of educational cooperation and cultural exchange. The Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, congratulated the students on being awarded scholarships sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). A total of 11 South African students received the Chinese government scholarship, while eight students were awarded the Academic Education Programmes scholarship. The students were admitted to top-tier Chinese universities, pursuing degree programmes in fields essential to South Africa's national development, such as cybersecurity, engineering management, biological sciences, and healthcare. Wu encouraged them to immerse themselves in China's rich culture, witness its breathtaking landscapes, and experience the country's modern civilisation, including high-speed rail, digital payments, smart cities, and cutting-edge technologies. "Your experience will prove that choosing to study in China is the right decision," he said. He expressed appreciation to China's partners, including the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Department of Basic Education. "Educational cooperation is an integral part of the China-South Africa All-round Strategic Cooperative Partnership in the New Era," Wu said. He said the Chinese government scholarship served as a vital source of momentum for people-to-people exchanges, supporting South African youth in broadening their horizons, enhancing their capacities, and realising their dreams. Thandazo Sithole, one of the scholarship recipients, expressed her excitement about starting her studies abroad. She said she had always dreamed of doing something special, particularly in innovation and technology, and saw this scholarship as an opportunity to pursue her aspirations. Sithole described the scholarship as more than just an academic opportunity, but a chance for access, representation, and rewriting the narrative for African youth. On behalf of her fellow recipients, she said: "We are not just going to China as students, we are going as ambassadors of our country. This is an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a new culture, learn cutting-edge skills, and gain new ideas that can help shape a better world." Sandisa Maqubela, deputy director at the Department of Higher Education and Training's National Skills Fund, said the partnership between the department and China began in 2012 with an agreement to send 10 students to China and Sweden. While she acknowledged the department's value for its strategic partnership with China, she also noted that the current intake of students for 2025 was relatively small. "As the National Skills Fund, we also like to increase the number to the numbers that we previously had. I think pre-Covid we had more than 50 students who were based in China. Our commitment is that we really want to increase the number of young South Africans who are keen to become part of the global economy," she said.

See the world differently with the all-new HUAWEI Pura 80 Series
Say hello to a new era of mobile photography. The HUAWEI Pura 80 Series is now officially available in South Africa, bringing standout design, world-class camera technology and exceptional performance together in a device that is incredible to hold in your hand and feels more like a professional tool than a smartphone. What makes the HUAWEI Pura 80 Series truly unforgettable is how it feels, not just in your hand but in the experience, it evokes. From the moment you pick it up, there's a sense of artistry and intention. The smooth curvature of the body, the weight that feels just right, the silk-like frame that catches the light with a quiet shimmer, it's more than a phone, it's a tactile expression of elegance. This is a device designed not only to be seen but to be felt. The monochrome glaze-inspired finish lends a calm, almost meditative quality, while the strikingly gorgeous Glazed Red is an incredible burgundy with sunburst detailing that shimmers like jewellery, bold, confident and luminous. It's the kind of design that doesn't follow trends but sets them. Whether you're reaching for it to capture a fleeting sunset or to take a call, it becomes an extension of your personal style, graceful, considered, and uncompromising. Additionally, the HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro is the only non-Ultra smartphone in the market to feature a 1-inch Ultra Lighting Camera sensor, delivering astonishing light intake and clarity that sets a new standard for smartphone photography, day or night. 'With the HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro, we've put a professional photography studio in your pocket,' says Peter Feng, CEO CBG at Huawei Technologies South Africa. 'It's for anyone who values exquisite design and demands the best in imaging, whether you're shooting city lights at midnight or portraits in vibrant low light.' Designed to turn heads The HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro isn't just a powerhouse in photography, it's a design statement. Drawing inspiration from timeless ceramic glazes and classic Italian jewellery, its silk-textured frame and monochrome glazed finish elevate the device to a wearable art form. The Glazed Red model takes things further with a sunburst Dazzling Forward Symbol design, a visual nod to fine watches and radiant light. It's a phone that feels as refined as it performs. The 6.8-inch HUAWEI X-True Display™ offers adaptive refresh rates from 1–120Hz, with ultra-responsive 300Hz touch sampling and 1440Hz PWM dimming for comfortable all-day viewing. Whether you're editing photos, streaming, or scrolling, the visuals are brilliant, even in direct sunlight thanks to its 3000-nit peak brightness. These phones are bold, exciting and comfortable to hold. Elevating them from being a simple phone to being an extension of the self. Ultra lighting, ultra clarity At the heart of the device is the 50MP Ultra Lighting Camera, which uses a 1-inch RYYB sensor and a variable aperture ranging from F1.6 to F4.0 across ten stops. This configuration allows for exceptional depth and exposure control, delivering richly detailed images even in the most challenging environments whether you're capturing portraits in low light or bright skies behind your subject. Complementing the main camera is a 48MP Ultra Lighting Macro Telephoto lens and a 40MP ultra-wide lens, offering impressive flexibility across focal lengths. Paired with Huawei's Ultra Chroma Camera, colour accuracy is elevated to a new level, making every shot pop with natural tones and expressive contrast. In scenes where lighting is complex, like bustling night markets or glowing street signs, the HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro's Super Night Mode ensures nothing is lost. Highlights retain detail, shadows stay sharp, and your photos tell the full story. Combined with DSLR-level features like a physical aperture and pro-grade sensor size, the HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro turns even casual photography into an art form. For those using the HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra, cinema-grade 16 EV dynamic range and a switchable dual telephoto lens deliver extraordinary clarity and balance, even at high zoom or in scenes with dramatic light and shadow. Packed with intelligent features Running on EMUI 15, the HUAWEI Pura 80 Series offers a smart and fluid user experience. AI Messaging keeps your notifications private, AI Gesture Controls enable hands-free navigation and the Smart Control Button puts custom shortcuts and fingerprint security at your fingertips. A large 5170mAh battery powers the day, supported by 100W HUAWEI SuperCharge for rapid wired charging, and 80W Wireless SuperCharge for convenience.
