Huawei unveils Pura 80 series smartphones with innovative camera
Chinese tech giant Huawei launched its Pura 80 smartphone series as it takes on the competition for camera photography prowess.
The company launched the new smartphones, including the Huawei MatePad 11.5 tablet, on a hot Thursday evening in Dubai, UAE.
Huawei's launch comes a day after Samsung launched its new Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 7 series, as the drive to gain market share intensifies.
Pura 80
Originally rebranded in 2024, the Pura series combines avant-garde design with high-performance mobile technology and photography.
One of the standout features of the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is the onboard artificial intelligence (AI), which allows the phone to process images using AI without the need for internet connectivity or data.
The Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Ultra versions are equipped with a 1-inch Ultra Lighting HDR camera.

Switchable camera
Paired with the pixel-level colour calibration of the Ultra Chroma Camera, it delivers clear photos with remarkably accurate colour reproduction.
Notably, the Pura 80 Ultra introduces the industry-first Switchable Dual Telephoto Camera, combining a large sensor with a dual telephoto lens for capturing clear shots at any distance.

Huawei CBG Peter Feng told The Citizen the Pura 80 series is defining the future of mobile imaging.
'We are not only providing the AI functionality when it comes to the camera. When it comes to the Pura 80 Ultra, it has a switchable dual lens. We put more than 140 precision components inside. So, it's very precise.
'This is a very powerful camera system because we can support this on the device with physical activity and functionality to give you the best shot ever before,' Feng said.
Tablet
With the convergence of education and technology, Huawei said the MatePad 11.5 is designed for both ambitious students and professionals entering the workforce.
It has a 2.5K resolution with PaperMatte display, housed in an ultra-thin 6.1 mm frame, powered by a 10,100 mAh battery. There is also the M-Pencil (3rd generation), which introduces magnetic wireless charging.
Pricing and availability
Huawei said pricing for the Pura 80 series smartphones and MatePad 11.5 will be announced soon.
South Africa will be getting the Pura 80 Pro and Ultra, which will be available in black gold and red.
The new devices are expected to be available in South Africa from 7 August.
Restrictions
With the launch of the new Huawei Pura 80 series, Huawei is seeking to cement its comeback in China and global premium smartphone market following years of US sanctions.
The Pura 80 series launch demonstrates Huawei's continued efforts to reclaim the top spot ahead of Samsung, Apple and Honour, who have gained significant market share due to the lack of Google services as a result of US sanctions.
Each new smartphone launch from Huawei is closely watched as a barometer of the company's technological capabilities and market resilience following years of restrictions that severely impacted its smartphone business.

The Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, congratulated the students on being awarded scholarships sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). A total of 11 South African students received the Chinese government scholarship, while eight students were awarded the Academic Education Programmes scholarship. The students were admitted to top-tier Chinese universities, pursuing degree programmes in fields essential to South Africa's national development, such as cybersecurity, engineering management, biological sciences, and healthcare. Wu encouraged them to immerse themselves in China's rich culture, witness its breathtaking landscapes, and experience the country's modern civilisation, including high-speed rail, digital payments, smart cities, and cutting-edge technologies. "Your experience will prove that choosing to study in China is the right decision," he said. He expressed appreciation to China's partners, including the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Department of Basic Education. "Educational cooperation is an integral part of the China-South Africa All-round Strategic Cooperative Partnership in the New Era," Wu said. He said the Chinese government scholarship served as a vital source of momentum for people-to-people exchanges, supporting South African youth in broadening their horizons, enhancing their capacities, and realising their dreams. Thandazo Sithole, one of the scholarship recipients, expressed her excitement about starting her studies abroad. She said she had always dreamed of doing something special, particularly in innovation and technology, and saw this scholarship as an opportunity to pursue her aspirations. Sithole described the scholarship as more than just an academic opportunity, but a chance for access, representation, and rewriting the narrative for African youth. On behalf of her fellow recipients, she said: "We are not just going to China as students, we are going as ambassadors of our country. This is an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a new culture, learn cutting-edge skills, and gain new ideas that can help shape a better world." Sandisa Maqubela, deputy director at the Department of Higher Education and Training's National Skills Fund, said the partnership between the department and China began in 2012 with an agreement to send 10 students to China and Sweden. While she acknowledged the department's value for its strategic partnership with China, she also noted that the current intake of students for 2025 was relatively small. "As the National Skills Fund, we also like to increase the number to the numbers that we previously had. I think pre-Covid we had more than 50 students who were based in China. Our commitment is that we really want to increase the number of young South Africans who are keen to become part of the global economy," she said.

Ithuba denies jackpot winners are ‘associated' to Lotto operator
Ithuba strongly denied the allegations, reassuring players it is committed to fairness. Lottery operator Ithuba has rubbished suggestions that its jackpots are won by those close to the company. A person won the R124 million PowerBall jackpot this week, sparking widespread speculation online about the legitimacy of the draw and the winner's alleged links to the lottery operator. X posts 'We will see more jackpots rolling over to bigger amounts and won by 1 person whom is their associate,' read a viral message on X (formerly Twitter), posted by someone claiming to be a 'former senior employee' of Ithuba. The message alleges that jackpot wins are being manipulated as part of an internal agenda to secure the renewal of Ithuba's license. The post further claims that jackpots are not being awarded randomly, suggesting instead that individuals close to the company are benefitting. 'Jackpots won't be won until the licence expires because Ithuba wanted a renewal of the licence,' the anonymous post read. A second viral message, shared by verified user @lindz_malindz, echoed similar claims. It stated: 'Did you know Ithuba lottery is paying these folks R80 to make noise about PowerBall jackpots.
