Jharkhand: Two Maoists including Rs 10 lakh bounty holder killed in Latehar
One of the deceased has been identified as Pappu Lohara, a wanted Maoist with multiple cases against him across several police stations in the state.
The second has been identified as Prabhat Lohara. Both were associated with the banned outfit Jharkhand Sangharsh Mukti Morcha (JSMM).
Following specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of Maoists in the region, a joint team of police and security forces, led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Kumar Gaurav, launched a search operation early Saturday.
Around 8 a.m., the team came face to face with a group of armed Maoists in the Ichwar forest, leading to a fierce exchange of fire.
Two Maoists were killed in the gunfight, while several others managed to escape under the cover of the dense forest. A search operation is underway, with the area cordoned off.
Security personnel recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from the encounter site, including an AK-47 rifle and other Maoist items. Police believe the Maoist group had gathered to carry out a major attack in the region.
Pappu Lohara had previously been involved in several violent incidents. Notably, on September 28, 2021, his squad had clashed with security forces in the Salaiya forest of Latehar, resulting in the martyrdom of BSF Deputy Commandant Rajesh Kumar. One Maoist was also killed in that encounter.
This operation comes weeks after a major breakthrough on April 21 in Jharkhand, when eight Maoists -- including top commander Prayag Manjhi, who carried a Rs 1 crore reward -- were killed in an encounter in the Lugu hill area of Bokaro district.
The Jharkhand Police, along with central security forces, continue to intensify anti-Naxal operations across the state.

Vijayawada: State police have decided to continue 'Operation Safe Campus Zone', a comprehensive anti-drug initiative that was successfully conducted from July 8 to 12, 2025, across all districts in the state. The operation aimed to eradicate illicit drug sales within 100 yards of educational institutions, following the TOFEI (Tobacco Free Educational Institution) guidelines framework. DGP Harish Kumar Gupta announced on Thursday in a statement that the police department has decided to extend the operation due to the excellent results achieved during the initial phase. He stated that the police verified 16,806 establishments across the state in five days and registered 25,807 cases against offenders who violated the rules by selling ganja and other banned products. A total fine of Rs. 40,62,092 was collected during the operation. Visakhapatnam district recorded 3,468 cases, Kakinada 3,115 cases, and Prakasam 4,015 cases. The police conducted searches for narcotic drugs, including ganja, NRX drugs, cough syrups, cigarettes, tobacco products, and gutka being sold near educational institutions. The operation followed a systematic approach, including intelligence-led targeting of hotspots within a 100-yard radius of educational institutions, multi-agency coordination involving the District Intelligence Wing and SB, and maintaining secrecy to ensure a surprise element. Comprehensive documentation was carried out through mandatory videography, and legal compliance was ensured under the NDPS Act 1985, BNSS 2023, and BSA 2023. Operation Safe Campus Zone will continue as an ongoing initiative to maintain sustained pressure on drug trafficking networks near educational institutions. The success of the initial five-day intensive phase has laid a strong foundation for regular monitoring and enforcement activities. The DGP stated that the operation successfully achieved its primary objective of disrupting drug sales near educational institutions, with the substantial number of cases registered and fines imposed demonstrating its effectiveness in creating a strong deterrent presence.

Friend sentenced to twelve years for acid attack on doctor in west Delhi
New Delhi: Eleven years after a female doctor was attacked with acid while on her way to work in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden, the accused—who was her best friend—was recently sentenced to 12 years in rigorous imprisonment. On Dec 23, 2014, the 30-year-old senior resident doctor was riding her scooter to work when unidentified attackers struck. They also snatched her purse, which contained a wallet and mobile phone. Police later arrested Ashok Yadav, the doctor's male friend, as the main conspirator behind the attack, while his accomplice, Vaibhav, was named as a co-conspirator. Vaibhav introduced Yadav to two juveniles who carried out the acid attack; the juveniles were subsequently apprehended as well. Yadav's counsel argued that the convict was undergoing trial for the past 10 years and was in judicial custody since Dec 25, 2014, except for a brief interim bail period during the Covid-19 pandemic. The defence highlighted his good conduct during incarceration, supported by several certificates of appreciation from jail authorities. She revealed that she lost vision in her right eye and still required regular medication to manage pain and inflammation. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, her vision in the affected eye could not be restored. In addition to the 12-year imprisonment, the convict was fined Rs 5 lakh. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one-year simple imprisonment. The sentencing order described Yadav as the mastermind behind the conspiracy. When the doctor rejected his repeated marriage proposals and became engaged to someone else, Yadav sought revenge by disfiguring her face. He roped in Vaibhav to execute the plan, which involved throwing acid on the doctor. To divert suspicion, Yadav staged the attack as a robbery by having her bag stolen. "An aggravating factor in this case is the manner in which the convict shattered the trust the victim placed in him," the order read. "As discussed in the judgment dated July 16, she trusted Yadav so much that he was the first person she called for help after the incident. However, Yadav, while pretending to be her friend, secretly planned to disfigure her by throwing acid on her face."
