Hospitality, Tourism Sectors Encouraged To Employ Parolees

Barnama25-05-2025
JERTIH, May 25 (Bernama) -- Employers in the tourism and hospitality sectors on Terengganu's resort islands are encouraged to hire inmates out on parole.
Terengganu Prisons director Mohd Nasir Yusof said employers in various sectors have the opportunity to hire inmates categorised as parolees (ODP) and persons released on licence (OBB) through the Corporate Smart Internship for Parolees (CSI Parol) programme. This initiative aims to provide employment opportunities in different fields.
'A total of 720 inmates have participated in the CSI programme in the state, and of that number, about 500 individuals have been employed across various sectors.
So far, 32 inmates are employed by three different employers on Redang Island, while five inmates are working for a single employer on Perhentian Island, he told reporters after opening the Community, OBB and Employers' awareness programme on Perhentian Island, near here, today.
Mohd Nasir said the department aims for at least five employers in the sector to hire parolees this year.
He added that employers and inmates can benefit from the programme.
'The inmates involved are those nearing release and have undergone thorough screening. They are also continuously monitored during their employment with the employer.
'The feedback we have received from tourism sector employers about the working inmates has been very positive, such as their good treatment of customers and zero criminal misconduct. In some cases, inmates who were fully released from prison were immediately offered permanent employment by the same employer.
'This programme also aims to educate the public, especially employers, to give these individuals a second chance to rebuild their lives, regain their self-confidence, and contribute positively to society,' he said.

Azerbaijan Seeks Global Support To Achieve Landmine-free Future

Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Malaysia Irfan Davudov delivers his opening remarks during the International Seminar: Towards a Landmine-Free World - The Case of Azerbaijan at the Asian International Arbitration Centre. --fotoBERNAMA (2025) COPYRIGHTS RESERVED By Suraidah Roslan & Ahmad Idzwan Arzmi KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Azerbaijan calls on the international community to provide political support, financial assistance and technical expertise to help the country achieve a landmine-free future. Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Malaysia, Irfan Davudov, said he hopes to see other countries, including Malaysia, support their initiative to be recognised globally under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). bootstrap slideshow 'We expect the Malaysian government to make a decision on this issue. I believe that financial or technical assistance from Malaysia would be highly appreciated,' he told Bernama after the International Seminar Towards a landmine-free world-case of Azerbaijan, here on Monday. He said the Mine Action Agency of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) plays an important role in the demining process in Azerbaijan, which is expected to take about 20 years and will require around US$25 billion to finance. Although the demining process will take a considerable amount of time, he is confident that it can be achieved with the support of other countries. Chair of the Steering Committee of the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Centre (ARMAC), Shaharuddin Onn, said that ARMAC reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with Azerbaijan on the international stage, as ARMAC contributes to the global humanitarian mine action dialogue. Shaharuddin, who is also the Ambassador of Malaysia to Cambodia, said that ARMAC hosted the Azerbaijan Mine Action Authority (ANAMA) in 2024 to showcase ASEAN's model for inter-agency coordination in assisting victims and rehabilitation approaches for landmine contamination. 'This cooperation reflects the shared commitment between ARMAC and ANAMA. The partnership is tailored, collaborative, and based on cyber-focused solutions. In fact, I see today's seminar as part of that growing bridge in our cooperation.

RISDA Appreciates SPM Top Achievers Who Took Part In Its Tuition Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA) today recognised 884 rural students and children of smallholders for being top achievers in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 through their participation in the tuition programme, Tuisyen Rakyat RISDA. The RISDA People's Tuition Appreciation Ceremony 2024, which took place at a hotel here, was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW). As a token of appreciation for the students' hard work and fighting spirit, Ahmad Zahid announced the provision of a special incentive of RM300 to all students who achieved excellence in the examination. Ahmad Zahid said the implementation of the programme reflects the commitment of the MADANI Rural Aspirations so that no rural child is left behind due to location or background constraints. "I am confident that this effort will yield results. I am actually looking at future professionals, scholars, technocrats, and perhaps there is even someone in front of me who will become the Prime Minister of Malaysia," said the Deputy Prime Minister. Also present were KKDW deputy minister Datuk Rubiah Wang, RISDA chairman Manndzri Nasib, MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, KKDW secretary-general Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar and RISDA director-general Zainal Azni Zulkifli. At the event, Ahmad Zahid also announced that the Monsoon Season Assistance (BMT) will continue this year, involving an allocation of RM264.91 million by RISDA to assist more than 330,000 smallholders, including those registered under FELDA and the Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS), in facing the unpredictable weather. Meanwhile, Manndzri said the RISDA tuition programme, which was introduced in 2007, has proven its effectiveness in improving the academic achievements of smallholders' children nationwide. "This year, recorded a 35 per cent increase with 884 students in the programme successfully obtaining 5As and above compared to 654 students last year. Well done and congratulations to all students, you have not only made your parents and teachers happy, but also brought glory to the community and village," he said.

CPO Futures End Lower On Weaker Export Performance In July

Sunvin Group head of commodity research Anilkumar Bagani said Malaysian palm oil exports for the July 1-25 period were estimated at 1,029,585 tonnes by Intertek Testing Services, down 9.23 per cent from the June 1-25 estimate. KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed lower today, weighed by Malaysian palm oil's weaker export performance in July. "Meanwhile, AmSpec Agri Malaysia reported exports at 896,484 tonnes, marking a 15.22 per cent decline over the same period," he told Bernama. Palm oil trader David Ng said the CPO market closed lower on Monday due to concerns over expectations of rising output and weaker demand in the coming weeks. He said the market sentiment was also dragged down by a drop in soybean oil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).
