Academy President Janet Yang expressed the significance of this year's selection.
"This year's Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact.'
She added that Allen's contributions as a trailblazing choreographer and actor have captivated generations, while Cruise's commitment to the theatrical experience and the stunts community has inspired many within the industry.
Despite being one of Hollywood's most bankable stars, Cruise has been nominated four times for an Oscar, never having taken home the coveted statue.
His nominations include Best Actor recognitions for "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Jerry Maguire", as well as a Best Supporting Actor nod for "Magnolia" and a Best Picture nomination as producer of "Top Gun: Maverick".
Allen, a force in the entertainment world for nearly five decades, has contributed significantly to both stage and screen, choreographing the Academy Awards ceremony on seven occasions. Her accomplishments span numerous films, including "Forget Paris" and "The Six Triple Eight", alongside her roles as producer and actor in well-regarded productions like "Fame" and "Ragtime".

'I am home': Minnie Dlamini returns to Durban to host afternoon radio slot
Minnie Dlamini has announced her return to Durban and revealed that she will be joining Gagasi FM. Image: Instagram 'My heart lies eGagasini.' These heartfelt words from Minnie Dlamini mark her return to her hometown of Durban. The well-known radio DJ is embarking on an exciting new chapter in her career, having officially joined the popular Durban radio station, Gagasi FM. 'Durban, I'm home for a brand new chapter 🚀,' she expressed. Dlamini, who rose to fame as a presenter, is now the co-host of the weekday drive show, The Gagasi Fastlane, which airs from 3pm to 6pm on weekdays. She made her debut on the station on Tuesday, teaming up with the beloved duo Sphectacula and DJ Naves, affectionately referred to as "The Kings of the Weekend". In a video shared on Instagram, Dlamini announced her homecoming, featuring moments with her son at the beach, enjoying the waves and glimpses of her home. 'Some places never stop calling you back. Where the waves hold your memories and the wind whispers what's next … my heart lies at eGagasini, and that's where I return. Durban, I am home for a brand-new chapter,' she said in the video. Although Dlamini has made a name for herself in Johannesburg, often dubbed the "city of lights", she was born and raised in Durban. Her return to the station follows the departure of Thandi 'Zisto' Mhlongo, who co-hosted The Gagasi Fastlane with Sphe and Naves, before resigning in March after seven years to join East Coast Radio. Dlamini is no stranger to making headlines, having recently been involved in a public dispute with controversial podcaster Macgyver 'MacG' Mukwevho. During an episode of his popular YouTube show, 'Podcast and Chill', Mukwevho made derogatory remarks about Dlamini's breakup with plastic surgeon Dr Brian Monaisa. He questioned her ability to maintain a relationship and made crude comments regarding her hygiene. Video Player is loading. An apology was later issued to her by the attorney of 'Podcast and Chill', but the damage had already been done. Taking the opportunity to address the public discourse surrounding her name, Dlamini expressed her intent to pursue legal action against Mukwevho. She shared her disbelief and pain at how her name, body and dignity had been dragged through the mud due to the vile and humiliating comments made by him.

Tom Cruise to receive prestigious Honorary Oscar
Tom Cruise has done it all. He's raced fighter jets, dangled from skyscrapers, and sprinted through explosions. Now, after decades of blockbuster hits, the Hollywood legend will finally take home an Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will honour Cruise with an Honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards. The event will take place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles on 16 November. For South African fans, this is big news, as Cruise has long been a favourite, lighting up screens. His films, especially the Mission: Impossible series, have packed cinemas across South Africa. Tom Cruise's journey to Oscar glory has been a long one, as despite four nominations, he had never clinched the golden statuette, according to NDTV. The Academy now recognises his 'extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy'. 'This year's Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals. Their extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,' said Academy President Janet Yang. She added, 'Tom Cruise's incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and the stunts community has inspired us all'. Tom Cruise, now 62, is known for his fearless approach to filmmaking, as he's recognised for performing his stunts, pushing the limits of what's possible. The Academy praised his role in keeping cinemas alive during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he championed the return to theatres. 'One of the most recognised and highest-grossing actors of all time, Cruise has been a committed advocate of the theatrical experience,' the Academy stated. His film credits read like a greatest hits of modern cinema: Risky Business , Top Gun , A Few Good Men , Jerry Maguire , Magnolia , and, of course, the Mission: Impossible franchise. Each film has left its mark on audiences worldwide, including right here in South Africa. Tom Cruise's Oscar will sit alongside honours for Debbie Allen, Wynn Thomas, and Dolly Parton, who will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for their charitable work. In Cruise's own words, 'I make movies for the big screen. The experience is everything.' Now, the Academy agrees. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Nine-year-old Danny Winks is about as passionate a Proteas fan as you're likely to find. This is the most wholesome video you'll see today, and the boy can play, too. Nine-year-old Proteas fanatic Daniel Winks was beside himself with excitement as he waited to get Temba Bavuma's signature at OR Tambo airport. Can you blame him? The Proteas gloriously return to South African soil after winning the World Test Championships against Australia at Lord's. This ends a 27-year trophy drought as far as ICC-sanctioned events go. It's not an exaggeration to suggest that this momentous Proteas success will usher in a new generation of fans. Daniel, however, has been passionately following South African cricket for as long as he could hold a ball. The youngster is a batting all-rounder with best bowling figures of 3/1 off three overs, and his high score is 74 off 44 balls in an U11 game. Daniel plays U9 for Wanderers and the Graham MacMillan High Performance Academy and occasionally for the U9 and U11 South African Cricket Academy sides. Meanwhile, check out the video below where Daniel sends the ball over the ropes for a maximum to bring up his half century. May as well do it in style, right?
