AOL Is Ending Dial-Up Internet Service

Entrepreneur13 hours ago
If you are old enough to remember the signature pinging, boinging, and hissing sounds that came with connecting to the Internet in the early days, hold onto those memories — AOL just announced that its dial-up is about to hang up forever.
The company released a statement on Friday, which read: "AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet."
The service and all associated software will stop working on September 30, 2025, the company added.

Wait, AOL dial-up service has been available all this time? That's a valid question, and the answer is shockingly yes. The New York Times, citing U.S. Census Bureau data, reports that in 2023, 163,000 United States households relied on dial-up service to access the internet. That represents just over 1 percent of all internet subscribers in the country.
The last time AOL released dial-up user numbers was in 2015, when the company reported two million users that represented $40 million a month in revenue. The company did not offer current user numbers with its closing announcement.
AOL's dial-up service unlocked internet access for millions of users in the 1990s, and its signature "You've Got Mail" sign-on announcement was so iconic that it spurred a rom-com of the same name starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as a couple who fall in love over instant messaging.

While the closure is sure to inspire a wave of nostalgic thinkpieces about a happier time of the internet's existence, Gen Xers should remember that the web might have seemed nicer than what we have today, but it was insanely slower. Dial-up internet speeds average about 56 kilobytes a second, reports The Times. Typical broadband connections are several thousand times faster. Think about that the next time you're frustrated that a web page took more than half a second to load.
End of an Era…

Why Dennis Quaid's iconic 'Parent Trap' pool scene was a costume designer's nightmare

Not even Elizabeth James could save Dennis Quaid from the fashion heroics of "The Parent Trap." Quaid starred alongside then-newcomer Lindsay Lohan and Natasha Richardson in the 1998 family comedy about estranged twin sisters Hallie Parker and Annie James, who scheme to reunite their divorced parents after meeting during a chance encounter at summer camp. One of Quaid's most memorable scenes from the Disney film, which grossed $92.1 million at the global box office, is when his character Nick Parker spots his fashion designer ex, Elizabeth James (Richardson), at a hotel pool area. Stunned to see his former spouse after more than a decade, Nick quickly — and ungracefully — makes his way across the deck to talk to James, eventually falling into the pool after bumping into a hotel employee. Nick, who was dressed in a crisp two-piece suit and black dress shoes, later emerges from the pool and sheepishly walks over to James to greet her. "Dennis was very game to fall into the pool a few times in a row, which meant drying off, changing, and taking another spill," the film's director Nancy Meyers told People magazine in an interview published Aug. 9. "He was just wonderful to work with." The now-iconic scene was filmed at The Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey, California, and turned the marina hotel into something of a pop cultural landmark over the years. "Of all the filming we have had at the hotel over the past 35 years, that is the movie that guests mention the most," Ed Curry, the hotel's director of sales and marketing, told the magazine. "People love the movie, and all seem to know that is our pool area." 'Parent Trap' reunion! Lindsay Lohan explains Elaine Hendrix's 'Freakier Friday' cameo How Dennis Quaid pulled off 'Parent Trap' pool scene Quaid's commitment to his "Parent Trap" wipeout came at a sartorial cost. Costume designer Penny Rose told People magazine that Quaid changed between six identical designer suits from Giorgio Armani for the aquatic scene, with the production crew even spraying the suits with pool water to test the fabric. Rose noted that the chlorine from the pool water caused the suit to shrink. "I mean, I've had Tom Cruise in a fake suede shirt so that he can get it wet," Rose said. "But you can't really replicate an Armani suit." A 'Parent Trap' revival? Dennis Quaid not sure it's possible without Natasha Richardson Quaid reflected on the impact of "The Parent Trap" on his career in a March interview with People magazine, telling the outlet that the beloved dad character has become his signature role. "Everybody grew up with 'The Parent Trap,' and now there's always new kids coming along," said Quaid, jokingly adding: "I tell people, 'I was your babysitter because your parents would put this on. They'd go do what they wanted to do in the next room.'" This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Dennis Quaid's 'Parent Trap' pool scene was a fashion nightmare

Motorola Razr Plus 2025 plummets to a new record-low price

Ryan Haines / Android Authority Are you looking to get into the world of foldable phones but don't want to pay the crazy prices they usually come associated with? Have we got the deal for you! Today, I came across this offer and was immediately surprised. The Motorola Razr Plus 2025 has dropped to a new record-low price of $626.18, saving you a whole $373.81 on the retail price. You must like Hot Pink, though! Buy the Motorola Razr Plus 2025 in Hot Pink for just $626.18 ($373.81 off) This offer is available from Amazon. Only the Hot Pink color version is discounted this much. Motorola Razr Plus 2025 (Hot Pink) Motorola Razr Plus 2025 (Hot Pink) Pleasant Pantone colors in a compact, folding phone The mid-tier model in the 2025 Razr series, the Motorola Razr+ comes with a 6.9-inch folding display, the same processor as the 2024 Plus model, and better battery performance with moto ai baked in. A 50MP camera, 12GB of RAM, and plenty of storage mean no compromises versus non-flip phones. See price at Amazon Save $373.81 Motorola launched three Razr 2025 models this year: the Razr 2025, Razr Plus 2025, and Razr Ultra 2025. The regular Razr is more of a budget device, while the Ultra is a premium handset that competes against the best phones out there. This means the Razr Plus finds itself right in the middle, but it is closer to a premium handset. You're actually getting quite a premium experience with this phone. For example, the Motorola Razr Plus 2025 features a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 with 12GB of RAM. With these specs, it's a phone that can easily handle most tasks, apps, or games, really. It comes with an outstanding display that measures 6.9 inches and features a gorgeous Foldable LTPO AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution. What's even more surprising is that it has a 165Hz refresh rate that will leave most current devices in the dust, even expensive, premium flagships. The 4.0-inch external display is just as lovely, and it will be a great way to interact with the phone without unfolding it all the time. Ryan Haines / Android Authority The design is also exceptional. It comes with a sturdy aluminum frame, but what I like the most is the back, which is made of vegan leather. This gives it a unique look and a soft texture unlike any other phone. It also comes in some really fun colors, such as this Hot Pink one. It is pretty resistant, too, offering an IP48 rating for both water and dust resistance. If I had to complain about anything, it would be the smaller 4,000mAh battery, but this is actually pretty standard in foldable phones. You just can't fit a large battery in such a small body. The good news is that it charges pretty fast, at 45W wired or 15W wirelessly. If you like the Hot Pink color and want a good foldable flip phone, this is your chance to get it at an amazing price. It's actually cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, and that one isn't as good! Go catch this deal while it's hot! If you're not convinced, here's our list of the best foldable phones. You can find some good alternatives there. Extra deal: The Motorola Razr Ultra is also on sale! Motorola Razr Ultra Motorola Razr Ultra Blisteringly fast charging and excellent battery life • Ultra-flagship-tier performance • Top-notch materials and eye-catching Pantone colors MSRP: $1,299.99 High-end processing power in a folding shell Adding Ultra to the name, the Motorola Razr Ultra is the first folding phone from Moto with a top-tier processor. The 7-inch folding display is paired with a half-size front display to give you both a premium experience, and a compact and portable communication device. See price at Amazon Save $200.00 See price at Amazon If you really want the best of the best, the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 isn't just Motorola's best foldable; many of us would argue it is the best flip phone, period. It is currently $200 off, bringing the price down to $1,099.99. It's not exactly cheap, either way, but it is a very capable phone that competes against the biggest contenders in the industry. Ryan Haines / Android Authority This one comes with the same aluminum frame, but the hinge is upgraded to stainless steel for a sturdier construction. It also gets a more potent Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite and 16GB of RAM. Both cameras feature a 50MP sensor. The display is slightly larger at 7.0 inches, and the definition is upgraded to 2,912 x 1,224. Even the battery is larger at 4,700mAh, and it charges significantly faster: 68W wired and 30W wirelessly. Follow

Elon Musk Says Apple Is Rigging the App Store for ChatGPT

Elon Musk has opened a fresh front in his ongoing feud with Big time he's targeting Apple. On Monday night, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO accused the iPhone maker of antitrust violations, claiming its App Store policies put his AI chatbot Grok, developed by xAI, at a disadvantage compared to rivals, particularly OpenAI's ChatGPT. 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter). 'xAI will take immediate legal action.' Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 12, 2025Musk didn't elaborate on the legal strategy or confirm whether a lawsuit is already in motion. But his public offensive had begun earlier in the evening, as if he were building a case before a jury. 'Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either 𝕏 or Grok in your 'Must Have' section when 𝕏 is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps?' he wrote in another post. 'Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know.' A quick check by Gizmodo found that ChatGPT is currently the No. 1 free app in the U.S. iOS App Store and the only AI chatbot featured in Apple's 'Must-Have Apps' section. Musk sees that as evidence of bias, and he's tying it to Apple's deeper ties with OpenAI. 'And why is ChatGPT literally in every list where you have editorial control?' he added in yet another post. Apple and OpenAI announced a partnership in June 2024 to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones, iPads, and Macs through Siri and system-wide writing tools. The deal gave OpenAI's chatbot unprecedented visibility and direct access to hundreds of millions of Apple users. And why is ChatGPT literally in every list where you have editorial control? — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 12, 2025Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left the company three years later after a falling-out, has since become one of its fiercest critics. His AI company, xAI, launched Grok in late 2023, branding it as an 'edgy' alternative to mainstream chatbots. Grok is integrated directly into X, the social platform Musk acquired in 2022. The spat with Apple adds to Musk's growing list of AI-related battles, including lawsuits, public feuds with former allies, and frequent claims that competitors are politically biased. Musk's threat marks the opening salvo in what could become a major new antitrust fight. Apple has long faced scrutiny and lawsuits from developers such as Epic Games, as well as regulators in the U.S. and Europe, who argue that its iron grip on the App Store amounts to an illegal monopoly. Now, Musk is repurposing those same arguments for the AI era. His complaint targets the core of Apple's App Store power: the ability to anoint winners and bury rivals through editorial curation and promotion. For an upstart like xAI, being sidelined while a competitor enjoys premium placement can be fatal. In Musk's view, Apple's promotion of ChatGPT is part of a cozy, potentially anti-competitive relationship with OpenAI. Apple did not immediately respond to Gizmodo's request for comment. It's Musk's classic strong arm move. He's done it before, yell loud enough, play the bully, and force your rival to the table. Now the question is whether Apple takes the bait or calls his bluff.
