Big Cine Expo at Chennai: How theatres can gear up

Less than a month ago, Thalaivan Thalaivi clashed at the Tamil cinema box office with Maareesan. Later this week, the same two films – one featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, and the other featuring Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu – are clashing yet again, at the OTT space. The two films are being releasing on Amazon Prime and Netflix respectively. For many, who might have missed these films on the big screen, this is an opportunity to catch up with them. But what does a scenario such as this mean to theatre owners? Or, in simpler words, why watch a film on the big screen when you can watch it at home in a few weeks? This was the hot topic of discussion at Big Cine Expo, held at Chennai Trade Centre on August 19 and 20. 'In 2016, when OTT started off, it was not threatening. But post the pandemic, when films started releasing directly on OTT platforms, this whole window of theatrical-OTT release schedule collapsed. For many people, it became a concern whether a certain film will hit the big screen or not,' said Thomas D'Souza, Senior Vice President (Programming), PVR-INOX. Is the onus on the cinema hall stakeholders or the makers to pull in audiences? It is the latter, felt Rahul Puri of Mukta A2 Cinemas. 'Cinema halls can see footfall only if there's content... content that has intrigue value. A great theatrical trailer, for instance, sucks people in. It's like a build-up to a phone launch,' said Rahul. While the situation in theatres in metropolitan cities might not be rosy, the story is a little different in tier-2 and tier-3 centres. Like in Mysore, for instance, where a nondescript Kannada film sans big names titled Su from So is turning out to be a hit. 'We have had 16 days with packed houses,' said Vaishali Hanumanth of DRC Cinemas, 'People are coming in as early as 7am to watch the film. A lot of people from the new generation are coming in to watch Kannada films as well. It proves that content is king.' Billed as a conglomeration for all stakeholders in the cinema business, Big Cine Expo also showcased stalls that dealt with ticketing, acoustics, interior design, popcorn and other aspects related to theatres.

‘Tu Bas Yeh Karta Reh': Shah Rukh Khan's Golden Advice To Palash Sen's Son

Singer-songwriter Palash Sen's son Kinshuk goes from backstage kid to playing a key character in Aditya Chopra's 'Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical' — and SRK notices. Kinshuk Sen, son of Delhi-based band Euphoria's frontman Palash Sen, never chose to step into the entertainment world, seeing the ups and downs of his father's career. Even though he grew up grooving to the rhythm of his father's band, he attended UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) to study cognitive science and follow his mother's path. He graduated in 2017 and secured a full-time research job in Los Angeles, but the melody of his childhood stayed with him. In the city of Hollywood dreams, Kinshuk couldn't stop himself from following his stage aspirations and auditioning for a role. After starring in a few films, he soon found himself on stage in the Aditya Chopra-directed Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical. The stage adaptation of the hit movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, featured Kinshuk as Kuljeet. The musical began playing in 2022 in San Diego, and earlier this year, it premiered in the United Kingdom at the Manchester Opera House. Kinshuk Sen on how singing and acting eventually found him Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India over a Zoom call, Kinshuk detailed how the crafts found their way to him, even when he wasn't actively chasing them. 'It was always my dream to be on stage, but I had suppressed it because of fear. Not anymore," he said. How Did Kinshuk Sen Land The Part? On being asked how he auditioned for this, the actor revealed, 'I got an email from my manager who asked me to audition for it. When I realised that Aditya Chopra and Vishal-Shekhar were associated with it, my jaw dropped. Most of the cast had been selected by then, and I was one of the last few to join. I hadn't met Aditya Chopra or Vishal-Shekhar." 'I sent in about four or five tapes at one point. And then one day, I will never forget it, my mom and my sister were visiting me to buy an outfit for the premiere of my film called 'In a Silent Way' (2020). We went shopping when all of a sudden, my manager informed me that I had landed the part. All of us just sat on the couch for a good five minutes, because we couldn't believe it!" Kinshuk expressed. Shah Rukh Khan's Advice For Kinshuk Sen During the same conversation, the actor also recalled a brief interaction with King Khan when he surprisingly entered the rehearsal room of the song in London. He said, 'One day, Shah Rukh Khan, sir, made a surprise visit to the rehearsal room in London; we were in shock because no one had informed us. We performed a track for him, and the song ended with me being in the centre." 'He gave us so many compliments and later told me, 'I had also started with musicals, but I couldn't sing then. I can't sing now. But at that time, there was another singer who used to sing for me. And his name was Palash Sen.' I had goosebumps… It was serendipity. When I hugged him and thanked him, he told me, 'I haven't gotten the opportunity to meet your dad for so long, but I have such good memories. Tu bas yeh karta reh [just keep at it],'" he added. Kinshuk Sen's journey He stepped into the Hollywood industry with his debut film, 'In A Silent Way'. Kinshuk plays the role of Anderson, a young jazz pianist from LA. Later, he starred in Güzel Kiz, a musical short film directed by his dad, Palash Sen. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
