Ex-EPL star Stam jailed for seven years over £48m cocaine haul
According to SUN UK, the ex-Wigan Athletic defender, 41, was part of a gang plotting to flood the Netherlands with more than two tonnes of cocaine - a haul with a street value of £48.6million.
Prosecutors had demanded 13 years, calling him a "major player" in the Dutch criminal underworld.
But a court cleared him of two of the most serious charges and instead handed down a seven-year jail term.
Stam was convicted of trafficking 724 kilos of cocaine and MDMA, and for possessing nitrous oxide or "laughing gas".
He at first protested his innocence, insisting: "It was stupid to go along with those guys… but I had nothing to do with those big batches of cocaine and nothing to do with setting up lines."
But he later admitted helping smuggle 20 kilos of cocaine from Brazil to Frankfurt - a consignment intercepted in Chile before reaching Rotterdam.
Police, who had hacked an encrypted messaging service, swooped on six homes and a camper van, arresting Stam's parents, brother and girlfriend. Officers found £85,000 in cash and later ordered the ex-footballer to repay £1.47million in criminal profits.
Stam's fall from grace is stark.
A Dutch champion with Steve McClaren's FC Twente in 2010, he joined Wigan that summer, making 73 appearances before missing their 2013 FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City with a broken leg.

Former Premier League referee Coote handed eight-week FA ban over Klopp comments
LONDON: Disgraced former Premier League referee David Coote has been given an eight-week suspension by the Football Association and told to attend an education programme over disparaging comments he made about ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Coote was sacked in December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory remarks about Klopp and Liverpool in 2020. He has been further sanctioned by the FA for an "aggravated breach" of rule E3.2, because of the reference he made to Klopp's German nationality in the video. The FA's written reasons for the verdict announced Tuesday said Coote expressed "deep remorse" and acknowledged his comments were "crass and inappropriate." Coote was charged by the FA in June, with the English game's ruling body saying at the time he would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated. A video showing Coote snorting white powder, reportedly during Euro 2024, emerged in November. Earlier this year European football's governing body UEFA banned Coote from any officiating activity until June 2026.

Soccer-FA imposes eight-week ban on former referee Coote for Klopp comments
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - West Ham United v Manchester United - London Stadium, London, Britain - October 27, 2024 Referee David Coote awards a penalty to West Ham United REUTERS/Tony O Brien/File Photo (Reuters) -Former Premier League referee David Coote was sanctioned and given an eight-week ban by the Football Association on Tuesday in relation to comments he made about former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp in a video that went viral last year. Coote had been sacked by English soccer referees' body PGMOL after a video, recorded in July 2020, circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Klopp and after a full investigation, his position was deemed untenable. The 43-year-old was charged by the FA in June and an independent Regulatory Commission has now imposed an eight-week suspension and mandatory face-to-face education programme on him. Coote had admitted the charge. "It was alleged that contrary to FA Rule E3.1 the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words about Jurgen Klopp in a video that was recorded around July 2020 and appeared on social media in November 2024," the FA said. "It was also alleged that his actions constitute an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as they included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality." Europe's soccer governing body also said Coote was banned from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026. Coote has apologised for his actions. The Sun also published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024.
