There's A Good Reason This Renault Hatchback Costs From $180,000

Every so often Renault does something unexpected. There was the mid-engined, V6-powered Clio, for example, the wonderfully curious Avantime, and the Spider, a two-seat sports car without a windshield.
Now there's another beautiful misfit, and it's called the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. As the name suggests, this is the third generation of 5 Turbo and the E stands for electric.
Its styling resembles a steroidal upgrade on the standard Renault 5 – itself an electric city car that is as acclaimed as it is affordable – but in reality the two-door carbon body is all-new. It sits atop an equally new platform that comprises a 70 kWh battery, an 800-volt electrical architecture and a pair of electric motors.
But instead of fitting one motor to each axle for all-wheel-drive, Renault has done what it does best, and thought outside the box. The result is a pair of in-wheel motors that send power directly to each of the Turbo 3E's back wheels. Total output is a wild 540 horsepower – or, context fans, almost 3.4 times more than the original 5 Turbo from 1980.
Add that to a relatively lightweight body (it'll tip the scales at 3,200 pounds) and Renault claims a supercar-like 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of under 3.5 seconds. Range is a claimed 249 miles, but naturally that'll depend heavily on how the Turbo 3E is driven. Given the outrageous styling, big power and huge, rally-style handbrake sprouting up between the seats, it's unlikely to be driven with hypermiling restraint.
Renault plans to build 1,980 examples, as a throwback to the launch year of the original 5 Turbo, and it'll be available in the UK and Europe (where it's priced from €155,000), plus Japan, Australia and the Middle East. Unfortunately it won't make its way to the US, so Americans won't get the opportunity to drop $180,000 on Renault's latest dose of hot-hatch extravagance.
That's also just the starting price. Renault says it expected Turbo 3E buyers to spend plenty more on customization, including paint jobs inspired by historic racing liveries, and personalized interiors.
Could this become a $200,000 Renault EV? I wouldn't bet against it. And while that is undoubtedly a lot of money, this could well become the first collectible electric car, except perhaps the first-generation Tesla Roadster. In that regard, the pumped-up Renault ticks a lot of boxes. It has outlandish styling and big performance, unique technology with those in-wheel motors, the possibility for high levels of personalization, and a strong back story.
The order book is open in the aforementioned regions now, with the first deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.

The consumer tech giant, having made a name for itself as China's alternative to Apple, has accelerated its automotive ambitions in recent years with its road-legal Porsche-killing super saloon. In the top version, the four-door SU7 Ultra uses a triple-motor powertrain to deliver 1,138 kW/1,548 hp. The urge allows it to dash to 100 km/h in under 2 seconds, according to the maker, before hitting a top speed of 350 km/h on the straights. Xiaomi's muscle car stands out in the electric segment for its speed, however Gran Turismo has not only added fast cars in the past, and also allows gamers to try out less racetrack-inclined models like Renault's Kangoo van and even Mercedes' military-style truck Unimog.

Sneak peek of the Calvin-40 The Renault Group has finalized a minority investment in the French self-balancing exoskeleton developer Wandercraft. This agreement unlocks new funding and serves as a vote of confidence in the technology that enables people confined to a wheelchair to stand and walk again without the need for crutches or walkers. Furthermore, the Renault Group will leverage Wandercraft's technical expertise to develop a new line of humanoid robots. This strategic partnership is initially focusing on Calvin, a line of next-generation robots for manufacturing operations (a sneak peek of the Calvin-40 is featured above). The intent is for these robots to perform tasks that require handling of loads in body positions that put too much wear and tear on workers' bodies. Finally, the partnership envisions leveraging Renault's assembly expertise to make robots and exoskeletons more affordable and easier to produce at scale. Wandercraft's use of AI was also highlighted in NVIDIA's CEO Keynote speech at CES 2025, Las Vegas. The company was able to compete by placing a mannequin inside their exoskeleton and still won first place in two disciplines at Humanoids 24. Finally, this isn't even the first time an exoskeleton developer has applied their expertise to the world of humanoid robotics. That honor goes to Fourier, which launched the GR-1 humanoid robot five years after releasing their first walking-assist exoskeleton. The Renault Group has chosen not only to invest in Wandercraft but also to partner with them in creating new and more affordable robotic solutions that improve people's lives.

Geely won't build plants in U.S., Europe amid excess global capacity, founder Li Shufu says

Geely Holding Group will not build assembly plants in Europe or the United States as the auto industry's globalization push stalls and the world faces a surplus of factories, founder and chairman Li Shufu said. The company instead should further enhance coordination with Volvo and other partners, including Renault and several other automotive companies, in the U.S. and Europe, Li said during a recent internal meeting at the company. He didn't elaborate on what he meant by coordination, according to a video of the meeting released by Geely on May 28. Geely and other automakers face increased competition in China from legacy automakers and startups such as Xiaomi. BYD has launched a bruising price war that sparked a recent sales surge but is also undercutting profits across the industry as other automakers are forced to match the discounts. Li's comments come amid a trade war between the U.S. and China that has effectively locked Chinese automakers out of the American market because of high tariffs on electric vehicles. BYD, Chery and other Chinese automakers are also making a push to expand sales overseas with foreign plants or through exports, adding more competition in key markets including Brazil. In Europe, Chinese automakers also face steep tariffs on EVs, prompting them to localize output. Globalization has come to an end after expanding for more than 40 years, and it is time for Geely to adjust its global strategy, Li said. 'We should avoid constructing production facilities, which involves purchasing land, building factories, buying equipment and hiring employees, as this is not an optimal approach given the global surplus in auto production capacity,' he said. Geely is still seeking what he called 'breakthroughs' in some 'key' markets, Li told staffers at the internal meeting. 'For example, in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, we must accelerate localization efforts, including the localization of components and talent,' he said. 'This is an urgent priority that requires immediate action,' he added. Geely Holding Group, based in Hangzhou, the capital of east China's Zhejiang province, builds and markets gasoline and electrified cars and light trucks under Geely and other brands. The private Chinese conglomerate owns Swedish carmaker Volvo Car Corp. and British taxi manufacturer London EV Co., previously known as London Taxi Co. It also holds shares in German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz and British sports car brands Aston Martin and Lotus, as well as Malaysian car brand Proton. Geely Holding Group assembles and distributes battery-electric vehicles for Smart and Lotus brands in China. Outside China, the Chinese group produces vehicles under the Geely brand in Belarus. It also produces and markets vehicles under Proton in Malaysia. In October 2022, Geely Holding Group acquired a 32 percent stake in Renault Group's Korean subsidiary to produce hybrid vehicles and internal combustion engine models for the local market. The two sides created a joint venture in London in May 2024 to develop hybrid and combustion powertrain systems including engines, transmissions, hybrid systems and batteries for their own brands and other global automakers including Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. On Feb. 18, Geely Holding Group signed a preliminary deal with Renault allowing it to use the French automaker's plants and distribution network in Brazil to build and sell vehicles locally.
