Road warriors? Rays will need to be entering opener vs. Angels
Tampa Bay, which is just 8-22 over its last 30 games, enters the series five games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final wild-card spot in the American League.
The Rays then will play three games at Seattle followed by a trip back down the coast to West Sacramento, Calif., for a three-game set with the Athletics. The trek will end with three games in San Francisco against the Giants.
After dropping two of three games at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers, including 3-0 on Sunday afternoon, the Rays could get a reset with the lengthy trip.
"It's an opportunity for us to turn the page," pitcher Drew Rasmussen said. "It's a sprint ahead of us, and if we show up to win one game every single day, we will have a good opportunity to play meaningful games down the stretch."
"There are a lot of positives to take from the series," infielder Brandon Lowe added. "Focus on those and get rid of any negative thoughts we have and get ready and go play good baseball on the west coast."
Los Angeles, which is 7-9 since the All-Star break, is 5 1/2 games behind the Mariners.
Right-hander Adrian Houser (6-2, 2.10 ERA), picked up at the trade deadline last week from the Chicago White Sox, will make his Rays debut in Monday's series opener against All-Star left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-7, 3.30).
Houser has yet to face the Angels in his career. He won his last four decisions with the White Sox, including 12-5 over the Chicago Cubs on July 25, when he allowed three runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Kikuchi, meanwhile, has faced the Rays 13 times (12 starts) and has a 6-3 record and 3.70 ERA against them. He took the loss the last time he faced them, April 9 in Tampa, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks in six innings in a 5-4 setback.
The Angels have gone just 5-5 on a 13-game homestand and needed a dramatic comeback from a five-run deficit on Sunday to avoid being swept by the White Sox.
Taylor Ward hit a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth, and Zach Neto homered, doubled and drove in three runs in Los Angeles' 8-5 win.
It was biggest comeback win of the season for the Angels, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Ward hit a 3-2 sweeper from reliever Tyler Alexander into the bullpen in left field for his team-leading 26th home run.
"Huge (win)," Ward said. "Getting down early like that, and the fight with the boys, it's what we've been doing all year. It's awesome."
Ward was asked how much momentum the comeback win would give the Angels heading into the series with Tampa Bay.
"A lot," he said. "We've just got to keep going out there and doing our thing, play good fundamental baseball, and good things will happen."

Less 'Dixieland Delight' and more 'Dixieland Disaster', Major League Baseball's attempt to showcase a game on a Tennessee Saturday night was beset by logistical nightmares, concessions issues, and torrential rain that pushed the game back a day. Nearly a decade after two college football games were played at Bristol Motor Speedway in the Appalachian Mountains near the Virginia-Tennessee border, MLB decided to put on the 'Speedway Classic' at the NASCAR track. But horrific weather made the game a nightmare for fans who were left stranded in the rain - where not even being underneath the bleachers provided reprieve. Add parking issues, sub-par food, and awful sight lines and it led to many fans branding the 'Speedway Classic' as the 'MLB version of Fyre Fest'. The game was initially set for a first pitch around 7:30pm Eastern time before a two hour, 17 minute rain delay pushed first-pitch back to 9:41pm. The temporary field didn't have the traditional drainage systems of an MLB ballpark, leading to poor conditions when the game eventually did get underway. By the time the bottom of the first inning arrived, water started to pool in the infield. Eventually, only four batters into that half of the inning, the game was halted. Eventually, the game was suspended at 10:25pm - nearly three hours after its intended start time - and was re-scheduled for 1:00pm the following day. Logistical nightmares awaited outside the venue as parking issues abounded. Shuttles set up to take people to and from the race track didn't meet the demand - leading to waits of multiple hours just to depart the game. When the game finally did resume, less than a quarter of the 91,000 fans who attended the night before turned out to watch the Braves beat the Reds 4-2 in the first MLB game played in Tennessee.

Dodgers turn to Tyler Glasnow to face Cardinals
August 4 - After salvaging the final two series of a nine-game road trip, the Los Angeles Dodgers will return home Monday night to face the St. Louis Cardinals, bringing their modest haul from last week's trade deadline with them. The Dodgers added right-handers Brock Stewart and Paul Gervase, as well as outfielder Alex Call, while awaiting roster mainstays to return from injuries for the stretch drive. Gervase was up for one day after the trade before he was shipped to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Los Angeles third baseman Max Muncy is expected back from a bone bruise in his knee at some point during a six-game homestand. Help on offense was sorely needed when the Dodgers were on an 18-inning scoreless streak over the weekend against the Tampa Bay Rays. Freddie Freeman, however, had three hits and an RBI in a 3-0 Los Angeles victory on Sunday. Angry Dallas Cowboys fans heckled Jerry Jones over the weekend as they responded to the owner's standoff with Micah Parsons. The pass rusher, 26, has been seeking a contract extension to improve on the terms of his current deal - but publicly requested a trade on Friday as the situation boiled over. And fans at the team's training camp the following day voiced their displeasure with that latest development as they chanted Parsons' name. Attendees at the practice in Oxnard, California - which Jones was present at - could at one point could be heard loudly chanting 'We want Micah!' Other fans brought signs to camp urging Jones to pay the four-time Pro Bowler, with one supporter even bringing a sign which read 'sell the team!' Parsons was present at the practice and took part in the beginning part of workouts, ESPN reported, but was not wearing his No. 11 jersey and was absent from the defense during certain drills. Parsons, for his part, said that prior conversation began with the pair talking about 'leadership' before contract talks were brought up, and that he did not walk away from the conversation believing an official agreement had been struck. 'Yes, I engaged in a back and forth in regards to what I wanted from my contract, but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation and I informed Mr. Jones afterward my agent would reach out thinking this would get things done,' he wrote in a statement shared on X. Parsons, who spark to Jones during the winter without his agent, David Mulugheta, says the team has not called his representation once about a deal. 'I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present,' he wrote. 'I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me.' Jones admitted he has not involved Mulugheta in the talks and explained why. 'My experience has been the agent is not the one that solves the problems you have when you're executing what you said you would do in the contract,' Jones said. 'So I like to deal directly with the player when it's of this nature.' Parsons, who is fifth in the NFL in sacks since debut year in 2021, will make $24million this season after the fifth-year option on his rookie contract got picked up. However, he's seeking a raise for his next deal after several fellow top rushers were paid handsomely this offseason. T.J. Watt's new three-year, $123million extension will see him paid an average of $41million per season in Pittsburgh, while Myles Garrett is not far behind after signing a four-year, $160million deal with Cleveland. Maxx Crosby's fresh three-year, $106.5million extension will also pay him an average of $35.5million per season. It's not exactly clear what Jones offered Parsons, but he spoke about 'guaranteeing somebody almost $200million' over the weekend. 'What y'all don't know is what I offered him, and it's a helluva lot more than you think I did,' he said.
