Over 300 arms & huge cache of ammo seized in Manipur

Imphal: Manipur Police and security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from five valley districts during a series of coordinated search operations launched late Friday night.
The operation led to the recovery of a substantial number of firearms, totalling 328, including SLRs, INSAS rifles, carbines, MP5 guns, LMGs, AK-series rifles, Amogh rifles and pistols, among others.
These intelligence-based operations mark a significant achievement for Manipur Police and the security forces in their continued efforts to restore normalcy, maintain public order and ensure the safety and security of citizens and their properties.
According to the police, joint teams comprising Manipur Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and personnel from the Indian Army and Assam Rifles conducted simultaneous raids across multiple locations on the outskirts of five valley districts, acting on specific intelligence inputs.
Briefing mediapersons, ADGP of Manipur Police said the search operations were launched on Friday night in the outskirts of five valley districts by joint teams of Manipur Police, CAPF, Army and Assam Rifles.

Explosives, 151 SLR rifles, 65 Insar rifles, 73 rifles of other kinds, 5 carbine guns, 2 MP-5 guns and other warlike stores were recovered by the teams. A mortar, flare guns and an AR-15 were also seized. Along with the firearms, security forces also recovered a large quantity of assorted magazines and live ammunition of various calibres, including SLR, INSAS, AK, and .303 rounds.
Explosives, including grenades, detonators and lathodes, were also part of the seizure.
This operation marks one of the largest recoveries in recent times and provide a boost to the state's ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy amid persistent unrest. Senior police officials confirmed that the operations were conducted in a highly coordinated manner, with all security stakeholders working in close synergy.
Manipur Police, while reiterating their commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of all citizens, urged the public to remain vigilant and to cooperate by reporting any suspicious activities or information related to illegal arms to the nearest police station or the Central Control Room.
Officials said such intelligence-based actions will continue in a focused and sustained manner until peace is fully restored in the state.

Dog bite panels formed: Govt to HC
Kochi: The state govt has informed the Kerala HC that district-level committees have been constituted for handling dog bite compensation claims, in compliance with the court's earlier directive to replace the Justice Siri Jagan Committee. The additional advocate general submitted that as directed by the court, each committee includes the secretary of district legal services authority (DLSA), district medical officer (DMO) and the joint director of the local self-govt department (LSGD). In addition, the govt has also included the district animal husbandry officer as a member. These district panels are intended to take over the function of the Justice Siri Jagan Committee—a body appointed by the Supreme Court in 2016 to adjudicate compensation for stray dog bite victims. The committee ceased functioning after a 2024 Supreme Court directive clarified that such matters now fall under the jurisdiction of high courts, leaving its future operations in limbo. These submissions were made in response to a batch of petitions seeking the court's intervention to curb stray dog attack incidents across the state. Speaking at the inauguration of a protest organized by the Confederation of Residents Association and Welfare Association in front of the Secretariat, Prabhakar said, "The law permits the killing of wild animals that endanger human life. Various animals are killed for food. Yet, laws should not prevent action against street dogs that attack children and spread deadly rabies." He argued that Section 11(3)(b) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 permits elimination of dangerous stray dogs in death chambers. "There is no legal barrier. The claim that central amendments are needed is false. The state govt only needs to issue an order," he said, adding that no one is demanding extermination of all dogs. Prabhakar proposed a two-phase approach: First, eliminate rabid dogs and those that bite or kill humans; second, capture, microchip, sterilize and release others, culling those that remain a threat. Heroin haul up, stokes HIV outbreak fear
Kochi: After MDMA, heroin smuggling is rapidly increasing, with nearly Rs 1 crore worth of the drug being seized last week in Ernakulam. With the possibility of many heroin users sharing syringes, the threat of a full-blown HIV outbreak looms large. Mubarak Hussain, 25, a native of Nagaon in Assam, was arrested with 45 grams of heroin worth Rs 14.2 lakh from Perumbavoor on Tuesday. Excise sleuths in Aluva seized 158 grams of heroin worth Rs 50 lakh from Assam-native Hussain Sahirul Islam on Monday. On August 10, two Assam natives were arrested with Rs 30 lakh worth of heroin in Perumbavoor. Since the drug can be easily concealed, most accused smuggle it by train from Assam, hiding it in plastic soap boxes. They can procure a single box from there for nearly Rs 80,000, repack into tiny bottles and sell them for Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 each. Police sources said the accused likely made multiple successful smuggling bids before being caught. KSACS is actively engaged in campaigns and screening migrant workers, she said. Dedicated Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) centres are active to gradually turn the users away from injectable drugs and then to deaddiction and rehabilitation, she added.
