STUP Consultants, the newly-appointed engineering and project delivery firm, recommended replacing single piers with portal piers (two-legged pillars) for the viaduct construction to ensure a stronger foundation. This structural modification anticipates the future Metro line that will connect IIM-Calcutta station to Diamond Park, eventually linking to the North-South Metro's Tollygunge station via Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital.
RVNL has submitted a proposal before the Railway Board to connect the Purple Line with the Blue Line (North-South Metro) through the IIM-C to Diamond Park route, continuing to Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital and terminating at Tollygunge station.
"The project's revised design reflects long-term planning for the city's expanding Metro system, ensuring structural compatibility with future line integrations while maintaining efficient public transportation access from the southern suburbs to the central business district (CBD)," a Railways official said.
RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd), the railways-owned company implementing the Purple Line, is revising its bidding documents for the 1.6 km Joka to IIM-C section to accommodate these changes. The immediate focus remains on finalising contracts for the elevated 1.6 km stretch, which includes constructing a Metro station around 100 m from the IIM-C campus on DH Road.

June active user additions led by Metro, A circles: Jefferies

Synopsis Active mobile subscribers in India saw a rise in June, driven by gains in Metro and A circles, offsetting losses in smaller cities. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel led subscriber additions, while Vodafone Idea continued to experience losses. The industry witnessed overall growth, indicating strong potential, though mobile number portability requests remained high. Agencies Indian telecom (Image for representation) New Delhi: The rise in active subscribers for June, following strong gains in May, were led by additions in Metro and A circles, comprising the country's larger cities, said a report, which added that the gains offset losses in smaller cities and towns.'(Active) Subscriber additions were led by Metros (1.5 million) and A Circles (2.4 million), which account for around 45% of the sector's subscriber base; however, B Circles (0.5 million) and C-circles (0.8 million) witnessed subscriber decline,' brokerage Jefferies said in a report. Market leader Reliance Jio, with 2.4 million and Bharti Airtel, with 1.2 million, led active subscriber additions, while debt-laden Vodafone Idea's fell 0.2 million, the 19th straight month of losses. The industry added 2.7 million active subscribers in June, having added 7.3 million in or VLR data, indicates the number of mobile users regularly using a mobile network.'This is the fourth straight month of Jio's outperformance over Bharti,' said Jefferies. 'Jio's continued outperformance versus Bharti on active subscriber additions augurs well for the sector's overall tariff outlook.' Over the past 12 months, Jio's active subscriber market share has increased by 130 basis points (bps) to 43%, driven by 180 bps market share gain in B Circles and 130 bps in A Circles. Bharti Airtel's active subscriber market share moderated by 40 to 36% as its market share gains in Metros have been offset by market share decline in B & C Circles. Vi's share has fallen by 180bps to 16%, driven by Metro, A & B as well in June, Jio gained well over twice the number of wireless subscribers – 1.9 million - than its nearest rival Bharti Airtel – 763,482, while cash-strapped Vi and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) continued to cede ground, losing 217,816 users and 305,766 users, respectively.'Subscriber additions concentrated in a few markets. Bharti gained subscribers in Metros and A Circles and lost subscribers in B and C Circles,' said Jefferies, adding that India's second largest telco's subscriber addition was concentrated in circles such as Gujarat, Maharasthra, Mumbai and West Bengal, where its market share is lower compared with its overall market however lost active users in Bihar, Kerala, Rajasthan and UP (E).'Reliance Jio gained subscribers in Metros, A & B Circles and lost subscribers in C-circles. Jio's subscriber addition was concentrated in Gujarat, Mumbai UP (W) and West Bengal, while it recorded losses in Assam, MP, Rajasthan and Orissa,' the brokerage added that while Vi has continued to lose active subscribers, the pace of decline has moderated, with the company losing only 4 million during the first half of 2025, 'In June, VIL lost active subs in 14 out of 22 circles, reflecting continued pressure on subscriber retention. (But) VIL's 4G subs increased by 0.7 million month-on-month after increasing by 1.0 million in May.'The industry added 22.3 million active users, which reflects 'strong subscriber growth potential', Jefferies said that the sector's mobile number portability (MNP) requests remained elevated at around 14 million in June, 'possibly as users continue to shift between operators post tariff hikes…higher churn usually drives up dealer commissions/SG&A expenses for telcos.'

Chandigarh: In two years, glide on PGI-Sarangpur stretch as heritage panel okays flyover

City residents can finally hope to say goodbye to traffic bottlenecks on the stretch between Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Sarangpur as the Chandigarh Heritage Committee has given its nod for a flyover on this route. First proposed in 2020, the flyover project had run into several hurdles. (HT photo for representation) This is the second flyover to be cleared for the city after the Tribune Flyover project, which recently received an in-principal nod from the Centre. Confirming the development, UT chief engineer CB Ojha said, 'The heritage panel has granted its approval for the PGIMER- Sarangpur flyover. We are now waiting for the official minutes of the meeting. Once we get it, we will float the tenders for the project.' As per officials, the tendering and project allotment process will take about two months while the flyover construction may take about 18 months. 'If things move as per plans, we can expect the flyover to be ready by March 2027,' said a senior official of the engineering department. Chandigarh: In two years, glide on PGI-Sarangpur stretch as heritage panel okays flyover First proposed in 2020, the flyover project had run into several hurdles. A geotechnical study was conducted and a feasibility report was submitted but the project was shelved in February 2023 following the announcement of a Metro corridor along the same route. The proposal was later revived after a fresh survey, conducted under the supervision of deputy commissioner and road safety committee chairperson Nishant Kumar Yadav, flagged the stretch as a major traffic bottleneck. To resolve the conflict between the flyover and the proposed Metro line, the UT engineering department in June suggested a double-decker structure—one level for Metro tracks and the other for vehicular traffic. The project was tabled for final approval before the Chandigarh Heritage Committee, the authority for clearing projects requiring architectural changes to the city. The found that the flyover does not interfere with the sectoral grid of heritage sectors (Sectors 1 to 30) and thus gave its go-ahead.
