STUP Consultants, the newly-appointed engineering and project delivery firm, recommended replacing single piers with portal piers (two-legged pillars) for the viaduct construction to ensure a stronger foundation. This structural modification anticipates the future Metro line that will connect IIM-Calcutta station to Diamond Park, eventually linking to the North-South Metro's Tollygunge station via Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital.
RVNL has submitted a proposal before the Railway Board to connect the Purple Line with the Blue Line (North-South Metro) through the IIM-C to Diamond Park route, continuing to Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital and terminating at Tollygunge station.
"The project's revised design reflects long-term planning for the city's expanding Metro system, ensuring structural compatibility with future line integrations while maintaining efficient public transportation access from the southern suburbs to the central business district (CBD)," a Railways official said.
RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd), the railways-owned company implementing the Purple Line, is revising its bidding documents for the 1.6 km Joka to IIM-C section to accommodate these changes. The immediate focus remains on finalising contracts for the elevated 1.6 km stretch, which includes constructing a Metro station around 100 m from the IIM-C campus on DH Road.

A Decade On, Brakes On Bike-Sharing Despite Foot On The Pedal

Nagpur: For over a decade, Nagpur has pursued the vision of becoming a cycling-friendly city, drawing inspiration from global models like Paris and Amsterdam. Public Bike Sharing (PBS) has been a consistent part of the city's Comprehensive Mobility Plans (CMPs). Despite the repeated push — and Rs47.5 crore proposed over three CMPs — the city still awaits a fully functional system. The concept was first introduced in the 2013 CMP, with Rs11.5 crore allocated for 79 docking stations across the Nagpur Metropolitan Region (NMR), including 70 sub-stations and 9 major docking hubs, which was prepared by NIT back then. In 2018, MahaMetro prepared the CMP and carried the idea forward, proposing 84 stations — again 9 main and 75 sub-stations — strategically placed near Metro stations and key bus terminals, with an estimated cost of Rs12 crore. Now, CMP 2025 revisits the plan on a larger scale, with a Rs24 crore budget and 120 proposed locations citywide. Despite these plans, the city saw little on-ground change. Independent efforts, including the bike-sharing partnership between MahaMetro and private operator VIPL, also failed to make an impact. This pattern of repeated proposals and limited implementation raises questions about feasibility, execution, and long-term planning. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo However, officials maintain that lessons were learned and that CMP 2025 will mark a turning point. A senior official told TOI, "Whenever we look at successful PBS models globally, one key element stands out — dedicated Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) infrastructure. This includes separate cycling lanes, wide footpaths, and safe, encroachment-free pedestrian zones. These are the foundations we're prioritising in the new plan. " He also outlined the adoption of the 'Hub & Spoke' model in the latest blueprint. "In this model, we ensure major docking stations are supported by sub-stations within a 2–3 km radius. For example, someone exiting a Metro station can pick up a cycle there and drop it near their home, where a sub-docking station will be available. From there, a clean, walkable footpath will lead them home. The goal is to make the system seamless and city-wide, not clustered in pockets," he explained. While the intent remains strong and the vision ambitious, the on-ground reality has not kept pace. For Nagpur's PBS scheme to succeed, it will need more than allocated budgets — it will require consistent execution, public awareness, behavioural shifts, and infrastructure that supports non-motorised mobility. With CMP 2025 laying renewed focus on integrated planning and last-mile connectivity, stakeholders remain hopeful. The question now is whether Nagpur can finally move from planning to pedalling.

Liberals unleash $3.86B in re-election cheques across Canada; Strategic spend or voter sway?

Liberal Members of Parliament (MPs) announced a staggering $3.86 billion in funding commitments across 411 projects nationwide in the week leading up to Canada's 45th general election on March 23, 2025. This pre-election spending surge, detailed in a Global News analysis, saw 38 Liberal MPs distributing cheques in 37 communities, from Yellowknife to St. John's. Notably, on March 22, the day before the election call, 26 MPs announced $1.8 billion for 116 projects. Major beneficiaries included Quebec's transit initiatives, with the Quebec City Tramway and Montreal's Blue Line extension receiving top-ups of $332.3 million and $650 million, respectively. In the week before the 2021 election, Liberals committed $3.03 billion to 495 projects. Similarly, ahead of the 2015 election, the Conservative government announced $2.7 billion across 430 projects. Over the 44th Parliament's four-year span, Liberal MPs announced 22,290 projects totaling over $110 billion. Of these, 9,834 projects worth $35.8 billion were in Liberal-held ridings, while Conservative ridings received $23.5 billion for 7,038 projects. NDP and Bloc Québécois ridings saw $7.27 billion and $10.7 billion, respectively. Live Events In Ontario, MP Terry Sheehan, facing a challenging re-election in the newly formed Sault Ste. Marie–Algoma riding, proactively announced funding in areas outside his previous jurisdiction. Sheehan visited communities like Wawa and Elliott Lake, announcing cheques totaling over $4.5 million. His efforts culminated in a narrow victory by 1,728 votes. In Alberta, MP George Chahal announced $8.3 million for 13 projects just before the campaign but lost his seat in Calgary McKnight. Similarly, despite $242.42 million invested in 267 projects in her Quebec riding, former minister Diane Lebouthillier was unseated by a Bloc Québécois challenger. While such pre-election spending is a recurring strategy, its effectiveness in securing electoral victories remains mixed.

Work starts near VIP Road for bottom tier of three-layer airport transit system

1 2 3 Kolkata: Construction began on the two-level tunnel under VIP Road near Kolkata airport. The lower-level tunnel will cut across VIP Road to create a four-lane underpass connecting the Kolkata airport's operational area with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) plot to the west of VIP Road. Here, the sparsely inhabited AAI staff colony will give way to a cargo complex. The tunnel above will be used by metro trains heading into and out of the airport station on the New Garia-Kolkata airport Orange Line. Above the twin cross-directional tunnels is the current VIP Road alignment. "Piling work is underway to create the box tunnel with four lanes, two heading to the proposed cargo complex from the airport and two others heading in the reverse direction. Once the access ramp is constructed, concrete boxes will be pushed under the VIP Road to create the tunnels without disturbing the at-grade traffic on VIP Road," said an official of the contractor engaged in the tunnel construction. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), which is in charge of the construction of the Orange Line, was also handed the job to build the airport cargo area access tunnel by AAI. The airport operator already handed Rs 230 crore to RVNL for the work, which is slated to be completed by this year-end. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Thereafter, RVNL will construct the metro tunnel over the airport tunnel using the same technology. The metro line, which is elevated throughout the alignment, will move into a tunnel as it approaches the airport. The proposed underpass is situated just below the metro line that descends into the underground metro station at the airport. The airport's expansion across VIP Road was necessitated by the current constraints. Expansion of Kolkata airport beyond the existing boundary to the east of VIP Road is a challenge as it is severely land-locked, and the surrounding areas are thickly populated. So, using the land on the opposite side of VIP Road that currently houses the AAI colony is the only option. "We are constructing a 15m wide and 5.5m high, four-lane underpass to link the existing operational area of the airport to the proposed area across VIP Road," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria. Once the new cargo complex is operational, VIP Road will cut through the airport with passenger terminals and flight operations to its east and the cargo facility to west. The space vacated at the airport once the cargo facility shifts to new complex will be utilised to add more parking bays.
