New Garia Metro station closed after cracks found in pillars
1 2 Kolkata: The North-South Metro's terminal Kavi Subhas station at New Garia was closed temporarily after cracks were discovered in the last four pillars on which the Up platform stands. All trains are now being terminated at Shahid Khudiram, the elevated metro station at Dhalai Bridge in Garia. It is the second last metro station on the city's southern fringes. Metro Railway workers spotted the cracks in the pillars on Monday morning and alerted their supervisors, following which inspections were conducted. "Around 12.45 pm, the metro station's services were suspended. Preliminary investigations suggest ground subsidence due to the heavy downpour over the past few days. The uneven ground settlement seemed to have caused cracks on the four piers on the Up platform at Kavi Subhas station. As a measure of precaution and to ensure the safety of passengers, services to and from Kavi Subhas station have been withdrawn. We are trying to resume operations from the terminal station as soon as possible," a metro spokesperson said, adding, "Train services on the Blue Line will operate between Shahid Khudiram and Dakshineswar in both Up and Down directions till further notice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo The damage is being assessed. Necessary repair and rehabilitation work will be taken up in a planned manner immediately." Empty rakes will continue to run up to Kavi Subhas station for reversal and maintenance at the depot with the terminal complex. Kavi Subhas is also the terminal station for the Orange Line or the New Garia-Airport corridor. The pillars on which the elevated Orange Line station stands are relatively new. Trains operated normally on this line. "I sensed something amiss as the digital signboards for the next train's timing went blank and trains arrived late," said Dipti Raut, a passenger at Park Street station. Officials confirmed this was the first time since the North-South Line's southern extension (in two phases in 2009-10) to New Garia from Tollygunge that a metro station was closed. "The design of the elevated section from Tollygunge to Kavi Subhas is flawed. The pier strengthening work was supposed to start long ago. But Metro Railway authorities have sat on inviting bids and initiating the repair work," said Subhasis Sengupta, vice-president, INTTUC-affiliated Metro Railway Progotisil Shramik Karmachari Union.

Metro services disrupted in Kolkata amid heavy rain
Commuters in Kolkata faced significant disruptions to metro services this Monday, the first working day of the week, due to severe waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall. While some services are still operating, they are running at a crawling pace. Services between Mahatma Gandhi Road station and Park Street halted, with multiple metro trains stranded at various stations across the network. Metro authorities have issued assurances that the issues will be promptly resolved, but commuters are already feeling the pinch, with many attempting to exit metro stations to find alternative transportation like buses and cabs to reach their workplaces. The disruption has led to an increase in crowds at several stations, with the escalators at Maidan station reportedly closed due to overwhelming pressure from the throngs of passengers. This latest disruption follows a similar incident two days ago. On Saturday afternoon, North-South Metro services (Dakshineswar to Kabi Subhash) were interrupted for nearly an hour when the drainage channel between the tracks in the tunnel suddenly filled with water. The incident, which occurred between Jatin Das Park and Netaji Bhavan stations from 3:40 pm to 4:35 pm, was attributed to a burst water pipe. Metro sources explained that the concrete drainage channel situated between the two tracks, specifically between Jatin Das Park and Kalighat stations, became inundated. Officials highlighted the critical risk posed by a flooded drainage channel to the metro's electrified third rail, which could lead to significant damage and widespread disruption. Consequently, services were suspended on Saturday as per standard metro operating procedures. Metro workers and officials responded by disconnecting the power supply to the third line and commencing repair work. The situation was brought under control after approximately an hour of effort. 25 loco pilots from ER and SER set to steer city Metro from July
1 2 3 Kolkata: Metro Railway, which was reeling under an acute staff shortage, especially drivers, will be getting around 25 new motormen July onwards. Even as new lines are being added, motormen were borrowed from North-South Metro, which was already functioning with a huge personnel deficit. "Metro Railway will be getting new crew members from South-Eastern and Eastern Railway from July onwards. Initially, around 20 to 25 motormen will join to fill the vacancies. More personnel will be added gradually," a senior Metro Railway official said. Metro Railway, which runs the city's 61km rapid transit network, is set to add the 7 km Noapara-Airport (Yellow line) soon. East-West Metro (Green line) also completed its last 2.5 km leg, which will make the entire 16.6 km operational as a continuous corridor from Sector V to Howrah Maidan. The one lakh daily ridership of the disjointed Green line is expected soar to around seven lakhs passengers every day when the entire line opens up. Under the circumstances, Metro needs more motormen immediately. The Railway Board has approved transferring loco pilots (as drivers are called in railways) from SER and ER to Kolkata Metro on the condition that only assistant loco pilots are transferred. "Both SER and ER have shortages of loco pilots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! This way, the ALPs can learn on the job," a Metro official said. When the ALPs join, those functioning as the second motormen will move to take positions as the main motorman (as they are called in Metro). "The scheme has been worked out for optimum utilisation of manpower," the officer said. The last time Metro recruited directly through the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) was in 2010. In 2012, prodded by the Railway Board, the joint procedure order (JPO) was inked for lateral transfers of motormen. The crisis was less obvious before Jan 2020, when Kolkata only had the North-South Metro (New Garia-Noapara or the Blue Line).

Design rejig for Purple Line's IIM-C extn to aid N-S link
Kolkata: The Purple Line Metro extension to IIM-Calcutta is undergoing significant design modifications following the appointment of new consultants, considering the proposed linking of this corridor with the Blue Line (North-South Metro). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now STUP Consultants, the newly-appointed engineering and project delivery firm, recommended replacing single piers with portal piers (two-legged pillars) for the viaduct construction to ensure a stronger foundation. This structural modification anticipates the future Metro line that will connect IIM-Calcutta station to Diamond Park, eventually linking to the North-South Metro's Tollygunge station via Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital. RVNL has submitted a proposal before the Railway Board to connect the Purple Line with the Blue Line (North-South Metro) through the IIM-C to Diamond Park route, continuing to Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital and terminating at Tollygunge station. "The project's revised design reflects long-term planning for the city's expanding Metro system, ensuring structural compatibility with future line integrations while maintaining efficient public transportation access from the southern suburbs to the central business district (CBD)," a Railways official said. RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd), the railways-owned company implementing the Purple Line, is revising its bidding documents for the 1.6 km Joka to IIM-C section to accommodate these changes. The immediate focus remains on finalising contracts for the elevated 1.6 km stretch, which includes constructing a Metro station around 100 m from the IIM-C campus on DH Road.
