McDonald's security guard shot dead by 15-year-old following dispute, Maryland cops say

Miami Herald29-01-2025

A 15-year-old boy was arrested after being accused of fatally shooting a security guard at McDonald's, Maryland law enforcement said.
On Jan. 12, Baltimore officers responded to reports of a shooting and found the security guard, later identified as 38-year-old Jamal Davis, with gunshot wounds, according to a Facebook post by the police department.
'Jamal was not just a member of our team but a part of our family. His unwavering dedication, quiet professionalism, and genuine kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered,' the Cameo Consultant Company, an area security business, said in a Jan. 13 Facebook post.
The shooting came after a dispute at McDonald's, where Davis was working as a security guard, police told WMAR.
Officers didn't specify what led to the altercation.
Danitra Bell, the owner of the McDonald's, said she was 'completely devastated by the tragic and senseless act of violence,' according to WJZ-TV.
The 15-year-old, who police didn't identify, was arrested Jan. 28 and sent to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where he was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, officials said.
'Jamal's positive energy and compassion enriched our lives in ways words cannot fully capture. He was an inspiration to us all, and his legacy will continue to influence our work and our bonds as a team,' Cameo Consultant Company said on Facebook.
Anyone with information is asked to call 410-396-2100, according to police.

Mom reported 3-year-old was abducted, now she's charged with murder, MD cops say

Two people are charged in connection to the death of a 3-year-old girl in Maryland. On June 10, Darrian Randle, 31, reported to police that her 3-year-old daughter was kidnapped at gunpoint, according to a Facebook post by the New Castle County Police. Randle told officers she pulled over when her daughter Nola became upset and a man came to her vehicle with a gun and took Nola, police said. An Amber Alert was issued for the girl. However, the alert was canceled after multiple agencies began an investigation and determined Randle had lied about the abduction, according to police. Then, after further investigation, authorities found human remains in a vacant lot in North East, a June 11 news release from the Maryland State Police said. The human remains found are consistent with that of a young girl, but authorities are waiting for autopsy results to confirm if it's Nola. Randle is charged with first- and second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse resulting in death of a minor under 13, and other related charges, state police said. She is in custody at the New Castle County Division of Police awaiting extradition. Cedrick Antoine Britten, 44, is also charged. Britten is believed to be Randle's boyfriend, WBAL reported. He is charged with accessory to first- and second-degree murder after the fact, failure to report child death and other related charges, according to the Maryland State Police. Britten is in police custody in Maryland. Attorney information for Randle and Britten was unavailable. In an interview with investigators, Randle told them she beat her daughter to death, court records said, according to WCAU. 'Randle confessed to physically striking [her daughter] with a belt approximately 15 - 20 times about her body,' the station reported based on court documents. Randle said Nola was unresponsive, so she and Britten put her in Britten's car and drove around, according to court records, WCAU reported. They then went back home and put her body in a suitcase before Britten later dropped it off at a park, the court documents said. The human remains that investigators found were 'consistent with an emaciated child' and wrapped in plastic wrap, WBAL reported. 'We just can't fathom how a human being can do this to another human being,' neighbor Chad Marshall told the news outlet. 'Hopefully, they get what they deserve as far as jail time and justice is served for the little girl.'

Man takes taxi to mountain trailhead after car crash — then vanishes, CA cops say

A man who took a taxi to a mountain trailhead after a car crash has been missing for two weeks, California police say. Lesner Noe Velasquez Cardenas, 21, 'was last seen by a taxi cab driver on Thursday, May 29, 2025, where he was dropped off at a trailhead to Avalanche Gulch on Mount Shasta,' the Redding Police Department said in a June 10 Facebook post. Cardenas was in a traffic collision May 29, police said in a June 4 Facebook post. He called California Highway Patrol about the crash but left before officers arrived, police said. Cardenas' roommates and acquaintances told detectives they believe he got a ride back to his apartment, police said. However, he was not at his apartment, and no one knew where he was, according to police. Cardenas was reported missing to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office on May 31, police said. Deputies learned Cardenas had in fact returned home after the crash but went missing sometime later, according to police. Police said they took over the investigation June 4. Detectives learned a cab picked up Cardenas near a Wells Fargo bank about 2 miles from his apartment shortly before 2:30 p.m. on May 29, police said. After confirming Cardenas' identity, the cab driver told detectives he took him 'to Mt. Shasta where he dropped him off at the trailhead to Avalanche Gulch,' police said. Cardenas had backpacking gear and 'made statements about trying to beat a friend's time to complete a hike,' according to police. At the time of his disappearance, Cardenas had a cellphone 'but it has not been in service since' the afternoon he disappeared, police said. Working with the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office's search and rescue team, police said they scoured the area June 6 and 7. The California Highway Patrol also searched by air, police said. Despite search efforts, Cardenas was not found, according to police. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 530-225-4200. Redding is about a 160-mile drive north from Sacramento.

Rehab employees broke 92-year-old dementia patient's bones, Colorado cops say

Two rehab center employees have been accused in the abuse that left a 92-year-old with broken bones, Colorado officials said. On May 9, deputies were called to the Sky Ridge Medical Center after it was determined that a 92-year-old woman with dementia had two separate broken bones in her leg, according to a June 11 Facebook post by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. In an interview with the orthopedic trauma nursing manager of Sky Ridge Medical Center, officers learned the report completed by the Orchard Park Health Care Center was not consistent with the woman's injuries, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by ABC 7 Denver. Orchard Park Health Care did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on June 12. The original report said the woman was found 'sitting in her wheelchair, screaming for help in terrible pain' and 'that no one had seen her fall' or knew what happened, officers said. It was later determined that the woman's injuries could not have happened while she was in the wheelchair, as it was a 'clean break,' according to the arrest affidavit. After a four-week long investigation, Patience Jackson, a certified nursing assistant with Orchard Park Health Care, was arrested on charges of criminal negligence, crimes against an at-risk person and complicity, officers said. An active arrest warrant was issued for Zainab Namale, a licensed practical nurse with Orchard Park Health Care, officers said. Jackson was booked into the Arapahoe County Detention Facility, officers said. Arapahoe County is about a 50-mile drive southeast from Denver.
