Delhi Man Goes On A Date, Slapped With Rs 12,000 Bill. What Is Dating App Scam?
A Delhi man claimed that he had met someone on a dating app and decided to meet at Cafe Locus in East of Kailash area in Delhi. His romantic date soon turned into a nightmare.
A Delhi man's right swipe on a dating app turned into a mid-day nightmare when he discovered that he was on a match made in hell. Sharing his horrifying experience on Reddit's r/LegalAdviceIndia subreddit, the user shared that his date asked him to meet at a cafe named Locus in the East of Kailash in Delhi. When his date began ordering Jägerbomb– shot of Jägermeister into a glass of an energy drink– each costing Rs 1200, the man decided to reveal that he had no more than Rs 3000 to spend for their date. The man was left dumbstruck when the woman, name disclosed as Bhumi by the man, ordered for the bill.
Rs 11,958 was the amount the two owed to the cafe. However, in his post, the man revealed that the woman admitted to him that all she was carrying was Rs 100. Perplexed, the man asked the staff at the cafe to split the bill and stop the woman from leaving the premises. Once Bhumi had left the cafe, Varsha, allegedly the owner of the eatery, approached the frightened man and issued him a threat that the authorities would have to be called and he would have to shell out an additional of Rs 10,000 making his sum go up to Rs 22,000.
The man also claimed that after protesting and negotiating with Varsha and the staff at the Locus cafe, he asked his friend to come to the cafe and remove him from the situation.
In the end, the matter was settled for Rs 2,500.
'The girl was just setup by the pub to increase the sales. It's a well known scam," a Reddit user wrote in response of the man's ordeal.
'Terrible Experience – Feels Like a Trap! I had one of the worst experiences ever at Locus Lounge & Café Bar in Greater Kailash Colony. The atmosphere is nowhere near what they promise—dark, uncomfortable, and honestly shady. But that's not even the worst part," a user wrote in their review before adding," This place seems to run on a trap-like business model. I was approached by a girl named Varsha, supposedly just to accompany for conversation—but it quickly became clear this was all part of a setup. Without my clear consent, expensive items kept getting added to the bill—drinks I didn't order, food I didn't even get a chance to try. The prices were shockingly high, and the final bill was outrageous."
Another user shared a similar experience.
'This restaurant and bar is a scam. Too much Over price. One shot of jagermaster 1200rs and 500rs for red bull. 10% Servicing charges not optional you must have to pay and additionally they will charge you 25% VAT. I suggest do not go to this restaurant and bar (sic)."
'This place is scam. Please stay away from here and their agents.
They ruined out night and wasted over 10,000 inr, (sic)" another chimed.
Date Scams
Although dating app scams aren't unheard of, several men have fallen prey to matches who work in unison with such dubious cafes or eateries that slap the victim with an exorbitant bill and threaten action if not paid in full.
Journalist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj had highlighted the dating app scam that had at least a dozen victims and the bill amounts ranging from Rs 23K to the north of Rs 60K.
Bhardwaj, in her viral thread on 'X', shed light on a cafe called The Godfather that was located in Mumbai and was allegedly the scamcentre of dating scams.
The modus operandi was simple. The women ordered drinks, hookah, shots, etc without showing the menu card to the victims.
Only once the bill arrived did the men know that they had been on a date they would remember for a lifetime.

Mumbai civic body fines 142 persons in three weeks for feeding pigeons
Mumbai's civic body has fined 142 persons for illegally feeding pigeons between July 13 and August 3, The Indian Express reported on Monday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has collected Rs 68,700 in penalties from those fined. The highest number of fines – 61, or nearly 43% of the total – were issued at the Dadar kabootarkhana, or pigeon feeding spot, The Times of India reported. The municipal corporation can levy a fine of up to Rs 500 on anyone found feeding animals or birds in the city in a non-designated area. After Dadar, the second-highest number of fines were issued in the H West ward – which includes parts of Bandra, Khar and Santacruz – where at least 15 persons were penalised for feeding pigeons at two kabootarkhanas. In the T ward, which covers Mulund, fines were collected from 13 persons for unauthorised feeding. On July 3, the Maharashtra government had directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to begin shutting down designated pigeon feeding spots in the city. As part of this move, the Mumbai civic body on Saturday closed the Dadar feeding ground, marking the end of an almost century-old tradition. On Friday, a first information report was registered at Mahim Police Station against an unidentified person for feeding pigeons at the spot. Play This came after the Bombay High Court on Thursday said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation can register first information reports against those who continue to feed pigeons despite directives against it. The court allowed the municipal corporation to file cases against those feeding pigeons under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to public nuisance, negligent acts likely to spread infectious diseases and malignant acts likely to spread life-threatening diseases. The court also told the civic body to install closed-circuit television cameras at places where pigeon feeding was still taking place.

ED raids ex-IAS officer, others in ₹105 crore SCERT 'fraud' case in Assam
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) carried out searches against retired IAS officer Sewali Devi Sharma and others in an alleged ₹105 crore scam in the Assam State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), official sources said. At least eight premises connected with Sharma, a former executive chairman-cum-director of the SCERT, and some of her alleged associates were raided under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. Also Read | ED conducts raids at premises linked to jailed Bihar cadre IAS officer Sanjeev Hans The money laundering case stems from a May 2023 FIR filed by the State police on the directions of the Assam CM's Special Vigilance Cell. She was arrested by the State police from Rajasthan a few days after filing of the complaint. Sharma was subsequently chargesheeted by police for alleged possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 5.7 crore, according to the sources. The 1992-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer hailed from the Rajasthan cadre and was on deputation to Assam when alleged irregularities worth Rs 105 crore took place during her tenure in the SCERT between 2017 and 2020. Reports said she obtained bail in this case from the Supreme Court in March. The former bureaucrat could not be contacted immediately for a comment on the ED action. Sharma, according to sources, served as the Executive Chairman-cum-Director of Open and Distance Learning Cell (ODL) of the SCERT and was responsible for the implementation of the National Council for Teacher Education's (NCTE) two-year Diploma in Elementary Education programme. The state government had approved the creation of 59 institutions and the training of 27,897 teachers. However, in comparison, the ex-IAS officer is alleged to have opened 347 study centres and enrolled 1,06,828 trainees to "collect more funds." Sharma, the sources claimed, opened five bank accounts for the ODL Cell, where she was the "sole signatory" and this was in "violation" of government rules. Of the ₹115 crore she received in fees from individuals, she allegedly spent more than Rs 105 crore without obtaining financial sanction from the state government, the sources alleged. The expenditure was incurred for supplies and execution of works without following the rules and procedures and payments were released without complete supply of materials, and no work was done, they claimed. These contracts, as per ED's probe, were given to entities "owned or controlled" by associates or family members (son-in-law, daughter) of Sharma as well as to a chartered accountant named Sarang More, who was the auditor of the ODL Cell. The contracts were awarded "without" advertisements or invitations for tenders, as stipulated by the government for each procurement of above ₹5 lakh, sources alleged. Except for two parties, none had any experience in executing work orders awarded to them and payments were made "without" the required receipts or verification of actual supply, the ED claimed.

847 kg of ganja worth Rs 4.2 crore seized in Telangana; 2 held
Last Updated: Hyderabad, Aug 5 (PTI) The Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) on Tuesday said it has dismantled a major interstate ganja trafficking network, seizing 847 kilograms of high-grade ganja valued at over Rs 4.2 crore in the illicit market and arrested two habitual offenders from Odisha. The operation is one of the largest and most precise anti-drug actions of 2025, targeting a supply corridor running from Malkangiri (Odisha) to Uttar Pradesh via Telangana and Karnataka, Superintendent of Police (EAGLE) Ch Rupesh said. Based on credible intelligence, teams intercepted a pick-up vehicle near Shamshabad road near here on August 4 and seized 847 kg of ganja (411 packets) from the vehicle, and arrested the two persons– Khilla Dhana and Rajendar B. According to an official release, Ramesh Sukri (absconding) operated as the central coordinator from Malkangiri, linked to both arrested accused through their village network. His associate, Jagadish Kuldeep, procured bulk ganja from cultivators like Shibo and Basu in remote forest areas, they said. Ten days ago, the syndicate's primary buyer, Shaffiq from Uttar Pradesh, personally handed over the pick-up vehicle to Ramesh, instructing that it be loaded with 800 kg of ganja and delivered to UP by handing over at Shamshabad, it said. The syndicate's method was precise: ganja was first moved in small loads from fields to safe village outskirts, then repacked in bags containing brown-tape-wrapped packets to mask odour. Drivers used Bengaluru National Highway and Outer Ring Road bypasses to avoid checkpoints and handovers were arranged at city outskirts to minimise exposure, the release said. Communication was restricted to basic feature phones with fresh SIMs, discarded after trips. For security, Khilla carried a sword hidden among the bags. This system had allowed the syndicate to complete multiple large deliveries without interception – until the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement's action ended their run, it said. This action has crippled a major ganja supply route to North India, the release said, adding efforts are underway to nab the absconding accused. Financial investigation and property attachment proceedings will be initiated under the NDPS Act and BNSS, it said.
