Police corporal killed after being rammed by SUV driven by fleeing robbers

Kedah police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah said Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, 35, died at the scene after he was struck by a Lexus SUV with four suspects on board.
ALOR SETAR - A police corporal was killed after he was rammed by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by robbers who were fleeing midway of robbing a house at Taman Golf, near here, yesterday.
Kedah police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah said Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, 35, died at the scene after he was struck by a Lexus SUV with four suspects on board.
"At 3.30 pm today, police received a tip-off regarding a suspected house burglary. A team of five officers and personnel from the Kedah police contingent's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was dispatched to the location in two vehicles.
"Upon arrival, the victim, who had just stepped out of the car, was rammed by the suspects who were attempting to flee. He sustained severe head and body injuries and died at the scene,' he told reporters when met at the location yesterday.
A suspect was arrested at the scene, while three others fled in the same vehicle but were later apprehended in Kepala Batas, near here after they hijacked an elderly couple's vehicle at a hotel.
"They forcibly removed the male driver and took off with his wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat.
"The vehicle was later involved in an accident in Kepala Batas, where police successfully apprehended all remaining suspects in the surrounding area,' he said, adding that the suspects, aged 24 to 26, will be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and Section 457 of the same Code for housebreaking.
The suspected ringleader, 26, has 77 prior criminal records, involving burglary, car theft, and drug offences, while the other three suspects, believed to be from the southern region, also have prior criminal records.
"We will apply for a remand order and continue our investigations,' he said.
The body of Corporal Mohd Hafizul, a 15-year veteran from Setiu, Terengganu, is currently at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital's forensics department in Alor Setar for post-mortem, he said, adding that the deceased is survived by his wife and three sons, aged four, nine, and 11. - BERNAMA

Two charged over RM13.45mil untaxed cigarettes seized in Sepang
SEPANG: Two men have been charged after police seized 566 cases of untaxed cigarettes worth about RM13.45 million here on Aug 3. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said authorities intercepted a bonded lorry at the Putrajaya toll of the Maju Expressway (MEX) in Cyberjaya that day. He said the operation, carried out about 2.30pm, involved policemen from Bukit Aman's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation and the Sepang police Criminal Investigation Department. He said an inspection of the lorry led to the discovery of various brands of illicit cigarettes, adding that the driver and co-driver of the vehicle, aged 35 and 38, were subsequently detained. Other items seized included the lorry, its ignition key, two mobile phones and four delivery order documents. Shazeli said checks revealed that both suspects have prior criminal and drug abuse records. "The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which provides for a fine of not less than 10 times the customs duty or RM100,000, whichever is higher, and not more than 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, whichever is higher, or imprisonment of between six months and five years, or both, upon conviction," he said. On Aug 7, both men were charged at the Sepang magistrate's court under the same section. Shazeli reminded the public not to get involved in any smuggling or sale of illicit cigarettes, adding that stern action will be taken against offenders. He also urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the police to safeguard national revenue, public safety and security.

Woman charged with attempted murder after ramming into policeman
KUALA LUMPUR: A woman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of attempting to murder a police officer by ramming her car into him and causing injury earlier this month. Cham Shan Jer, 31, is accused of ramming her car into Cpl Muhamad Fahrulradi Sabran at Jalan Usahawan 6, Setapak, around 11.15pm on Aug 1. She was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 10 years and a fine. If the act causes injury, the penalty can extend to 20 years' imprisonment, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the case involving an alleged attempt to kill a police officer. However, defence counsel Nurul Fatihah Abdul Ghani urged the court to grant bail, citing that her client, a single mother of three, also cares for her elderly parents. "My client is a single mother. We request bail to be set at the lowest possible amount," she said.
