Horror bus crash leaves at least 18 dead as rescue mission mounted
At least 18 people have tragically been killed in a bus crash after a double-decker plunged over 160ft into a ravine.
The packed vehicle travelling from Lima, Peru, to the country's Amazon area overturned after it veered off a winding road, with another 48 passengers injured, on Friday, July 25. Officials revealed that 15 of the passengers were found dead at the horror scene while three more people also died in hospital. A desperate rescue mission was mounted after the horror smash in an attempt to save as many lives as possible, reports the Mirror.
Officials sadly confirmed that two children were among the dead, when the bus plunged off a highway and landed on its roof in Peru's Junin region. The bus, owned by Expreso Molina Líder Internacional, was carrying more than 60 people at the time of the incident.
A health official from the city of Tarma in central Peru, Aldo Tineo, confirmed that authorities were in the process of identifying the dead bodies and identifying the cause of the fatal incident.
Footage shown on local TV showed that the double-decker had split into two upon impact with shattered glass and broken windows scattered across the horror site. Both firefighters and police tried to rescue victims from the wreckage.
Peru unfortunately has a tragic past with other deadly crashes from it's winding roads. At least eight members of the same orchestra group died when their bus plunged off a road and into a ravine one year ago, in July 2024.
The group were travelling from the city of Oxapampa to the Peruvian capital of Lima when the accident occurred close to the city of Tarma. Nine people died and 12 more were injured in the horrific accident.
The victims included eight members of the 20-man Antolog a del Folklore orchestra and the driver of the coach. The music group had finished a gig the night before and were on their way to their next show when the tragedy struck. The vehicle reportedly plunged down a 200m (656 ft) ravine.
Omar Valdivia, speaking to local media at the time, said: "A car suddenly moved into the driver's lane and to avoid crashing into it, the driver had to steer slightly, which caused the bus to go off the edge."
A Brit was among the dead when a coach crashed in Peru, in October 2023. The holidaymakers, many of them foreign nationals, were on their way to a popular destination called the Mountain of Seven Colours in the Peruvian Andes.
The Brit, aged 32, died and more than 20 people were left injured when the vehicle came off the road and rolled over several times before ending up on its side. The 32-year-old died after he became trapped under the crashed vehicle, officials confirmed.

Germany train derailment kills at least three leaving others seriously injured
Authorities confirmed approximately 100 passengers were on the train when at least two carriages left the tracks in Biberach, Germany, with several people killed. At least three people were killed and others seriously injured when a train derailed in southern Germany, police say. Authorities said around 100 passengers were on board the RE55 regional express train when it left the tracks in the Biberach district. A large number of emergency services were deployed to the scene. Preliminary reports say the crash resulted in numerous injuries. Several people were killed in what has been described as a "mass casualty incident" by local authorities, reports the Mirror. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158km (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. In a statement shared on X, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said: "The train accident in the Biberach district deeply shocks me. "I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister, and I have asked them to support the rescue services with all available means. "We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their families." According to the German Press Agency (dpa), Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is also heading to the scene of the accident. His spokesman said he will get an impression of the rescue efforts following the derailment. A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild: "Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed." Because of the number of people killed and injured, the crash has been declared a mass casualty incident by German authorities. This typically happens when rescue services deal with an incident in which a large number of injured or sick people need to be cared for. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Toddler found dead on popular Greek tourist beach by horrified passer-by
A young girl was found dead on a beach near the Greek capital of Athens early on Sunday - and authorities are now carrying out investigations to determine what happened to her. A toddler has tragically been found dead on a popular tourist beach in Greece by a horrified passerby. The child, believed to be around two or three years old, was discovered on Eden Beach in Paleo Faliro, near Athens, in the early hours of July 27. Local reports say a man, from Egypt, spotted the girl's body on the shore and called the emergency services. Authorities rushed to the scene, where they located the child, who hasn't been identified so far. Her body was transported to the Agia Sofia Children's Hospital via ambulance, where doctors pronounced her dead. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the girl's cause of death, authorities have said. Greek newspaper Protothema reported that the child was wearing a full-zip bathing suit and was not wearing armbands when she was found. The publication added that there were no obvious signs of abuse on the girl. No child matching her characteristics has been reported missing in the area. Investigations are ongoing to determine the girl's identity and the circumstances of her death, reports the Mirror. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
