Noted astrophysicist, science writer Jayant Narlikar dead

Pune, May 20 (UNI) Eminent astrophysicist and science writer Dr Jayant Vishnu Narlikar died at his residence here on Tuesday following cardiac arrest, family sources said.Narkilkar, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, was 86.
He passed away in his sleep.
Narlikar was born on July 19, 1938, in Kolhapur. His father Vishnu Vasudev Narlikar, was a famous mathematician and head of the Mathematics Department of Banaras Hindu University, while his mother Sumati was a Sanskrit scholar.
After completing his schooling in Varanasi, Jayant Narlikar obtained a degree in science and then went to Cambridge in the UK for higher education. He completed his PhD degree from Cambridge, and also won the Wrangler degree, Tyson Medal in astronomy, Smith Prize and several other awards.
Narlikar drew the attention of scientists around the world by proposing the 'Conformal Gravity Theory' along with Sir Fred Hoyle.
He also received India's second and third highest civilian honours, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan respectively for his valuable contribution in the field of astrophysics.
He not only contributed as a science researcher but also spread science through his writings.
Some of his famous scientific books are 'Antaralatil Bhasmasur', Antarala and Vigyan, Akashashi Jadle Nate and Suryacha Prapok. His Marathi autobiography 'Char Nagarantele Maje Vishwa' won the Delhi Sahitya Akademi Award.
He also got the Maharashtra Government Award for his book 'Denagi', the Lifetime Achievement Award in Literature from the American Foundation, and the Rashtra Bhushan Award from the Phi Foundation, Ichalkaranji. UNI SP SSP

TIRUPATI: Vice-Chancellor of National Sanskrit University (NSU), Tirupati, Prof GSR Krishnamurthy called for a united and technologically-driven approach to revitalise Sanskrit and Indian knowledge systems for the next generation. He addressed the Fourth Utkarsha Samaroh (Excellence Ceremony) of India's Central Sanskrit Universities in Nashik on Monday. The event brought together eminent scholars, students and leaders of Sanskrit academia. The guests included Prof Murali Manohar Pathak, Vice-Chancellor of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, and Prof Srinivasa Varkhedi, Vice-Chancellor of the host institution, Central Sanskrit University. Together, they contributed to the success and intellectual richness of the ceremony. In his keynote address, Prof Krishnamurthy stressed that the three Central Sanskrit Universities are working in close coordination to develop comprehensive strategies aimed at promoting Sanskrit education and cultural knowledge. 'We are in an era where ancient wisdom and modern tools must go hand in hand. Our universities are not working in isolation. We are pooling our resources, expertise and vision to take Sanskrit to greater heights,' he said. He underscored the significance of adapting Sanskrit pedagogy to suit contemporary learners. 'Our goal over the next decade is to harness modern technology to make Sanskrit's profound knowledge accessible to students across India and beyond,' Prof Krishnamurthy remarked. He emphasised that this approach would not only preserve Sanskrit but also make it a dynamic force in modern education and intellectual discourse. The Utkarsha Samaroh also featured extensive discussions by leading Sanskrit scholars on the integration of Indian culture and values into modern education. Speakers explored how digital platforms, multimedia resources and interdisciplinary approaches can make Sanskrit more engaging and impactful. During this Utkarsha festival, a book on Vedic Mathematics, authored by Head of the department of Mathematics at NSU Prof V Ramesh Babu, was also released. Similarly, the book 'Sri Chaitanya Philosophy' was unveiled by the guests.

Chennai, June 9 (UNI) Axiom Mission 4 to International Space Station (ISS), piloted by decorated Indian Astronaut Subhanshu Shukla and three other crew from US, Hungary and Poland, was deferred by a day to June 11 due to adverse weather conditions. The Mission was scheduled for take off aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to the ISS tomorrow morning. The mission that involved docking in ISS for 14 days after a 28 hour flight journey to conduct various experiments, was postponed to June 11, citing bad weather. Confirming this, Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh posted on X, due to adverse weather, the launch of the Axiom-4 mission carrying Indian Gaganytri to the ISS is rescheduldd from June 10 to possibly June 11, 2025 and further update, if any, will be shared. Meanwhile, Space X in a social media post, said "SpaceX is targeting Wednesday, June 11 for Falcon-9's launch of Axiom Space's Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Launch is targeted for 8:00 a.m. ET, with a backup opportunity available on Thursday, June 12 at 7:37 a.m. ET. A live webcast of this mission will begin about two hours prior to liftoff, it said. This is the first flight for the Dragon spacecraft supporting this mission. This will be the second flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched a Starlink mission. Following stage separation, Falcon 9's first stage will land on Landing Zone 1 (LZ-1) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. During their time on the orbiting laboratory, the crew will conduct more than 60 scientific experiments and demonstrations focused on human research, Earth observation, and life, biological, and material sciences. Bengaluru, June 9 (UNI) In a landmark collaboration between India and the United States, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are set to launch a joint mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on June 10. The historic mission marks India's first human spaceflight participation in an ISS expedition, symbolising a significant stride in Indo-US space cooperation. The lift-off is scheduled for 5:52 PM IST, with a special YouTube Live stream beginning at 3:45 pm IST to mark the occasion. "ISRO-NASA Mission to ISS. India heads to the International Space Station! Join the YouTube LIVE on June 10, 3:45 PM IST — liftoff at 5:52 PM!" ISRO announced on X platform on Monday. The mission will see an Indian astronaut join the crew aboard the ISS, contributing to microgravity research, technology demonstrations, and space medicine experiments during the visit. This effort follows the signing of key space agreements and growing synergy between ISRO and NASA in the fields of satellite navigation, Earth observation, and deep space exploration. The mission is being widely seen as a precursor to future joint efforts in lunar and interplanetary exploration under the Artemis Accord framework, to which India is a signatory.
