'I was at Rod Stewart's Glasto set - there was something special you didn't see'

Daily Mirrora day ago

It was a family affair for Sir Rod Stewart as he returning to Glastonbury for the first time in over two decades.
The crowd was packed with fans of all ages - with youngsters watching him power through a 90 minute set with their parents. There was no generation not represented amongst the thousands out in force for his performance.
The Maggie May rocker, 80, pulled out all the stops as he headlined the Pyramid Stage for the Sunday Legends Slot - as the crowd lapped up his classics with special guests Ronnie Wood, Lulu and Mick Hucknull.
But the real stars of the show were Rod's family, who mingled with fans and supported the legendary singer ahead of his big day.

Just hours before Rod took to the stage, his wife Penny Lancaster put on quite the show herself as she mingled with his fans in the VIP bar.
The Loose Women star - and Rod's older sons, dressed in his trademark leopard print - looked every inch the proud family as they laughed and joked with people excited to see their loved one's big moment.
Taking selfies with hardcore fans braving the heat to don Rod wigs and leopard print leggings, Penny was in good spirits as she caught up with pals before watching her husband's show.
But Penny's work to ensure Rod's set went smoothly started way before today. Speaking to the Mirror ahead of the show, an insider revealed how Rod went to military-like lengths to ensure all went to plan.
Already super-fit from swimming lengths in his pool four times a week, the star has been on a period of vocal rest to ensure his raspy voice is firing on all cylinders.

Says our mole: 'It's been quite hard as Rod is a chatterbox, but he knows he needs to preserve what's his biggest weapon…his voice. Rehearsals have been taking part this week with his whole band at a secret location with Penny a constant presence.'
It seemed Rod wanted to give back to Penny while on the Pyramid Stage as he gave a touching nod to his supportive wife. Near the start of his show, he threw in the classic First Cut Is The Deepest.
The tune by Cat Stephens was initially recorded by Rod in 1976. And he superbly entertained the crowd with it was again. But for eagle-eyed fans, it appeared as though he gave a sweet nod towards his wife of 18 years, Penny.
While singing the line: "I still want you by my side," Rod pointed off stage and gave a wry smile.
Rod couldn't have asked for better PR from his wife. If she is any representation of how he treats his followers, they're a very lucky fan base. READ MORE: How to see Glastonbury acts live this year after festival comes to an end

Rod Stewart, Bobby Vylan and Kneecap - Readers discuss politics at Glastonbury

Do you agree with our readers? Have your say on these MetroTalk topics and more in the comments. Rod Stewart says we should 'give [Nigel] Farage a chance', saying the Reform leader is 'coming across well' (Metro, Mon). By all means listen to Sir Rod's music but don't listen to the 80-year-old rocker for advice on politics, how to vote or even what's good for younger UK artists. Rebranding his Brexit Party as Reform UK isn't enough to obscure what a disaster Farage has already been for Britain, including its music industry. Brexit has been awful for musicians wanting to tour Europe, hence the campaign to get the damage undone, which is at Peter Brown, Cleckheaton Rapper Bobby Vylan led chants of 'death, death to the IDF' (the Israel Defence Forces) during his Glastonbury performance. Irish hip-hop band Kneecap were allowed to play despite member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh being charged with displaying a Hezbollah flag at a previous gig. If Lucy Connolly, the wife of a Tory councillor, can be jailed for saying on the day of the Southport riots that hotels housing asylum seekers should be set on fire, then Vylan and Kneecap should be immediately brought before a judge for hate speak and inciting violence. Facial recognition technology should be used to identify the worst offenders in the Glastonbury crowd who joined in the death chants and make an example of them. Barry Stanton, Folkestone It's a shame Glastonbury appears to be descending in to a political commentary event rather than a musical one. There was a time when an artist would make a subtle comment in a lyric or song title and the fans would get their point and that would be it. Now it's in your face. I'd have thought most fans go to Glastonbury for a release from the often depressing news rather than be subjected to another political broadcast. Even Rod is at it. He should stick to talking about Maggie. Dec, Essex I am increasingly critical of Israel's military actions, which have had a huge civilian cost, and I think it is legitimate to call attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. But I have far more respect for aid agencies in Gaza than any musician. Free speech is not and never has been a green light to incite violence. I wonder what supporters of Kneecap or Bobby Vylan would make of a British nationalist trio promoting far-right groups? At Glastonbury, Kneecap 'joked' about starting a riot outside the upcoming court case. But this has real-world consequences for police officers who may be injured if trouble breaks out. None of this helps the struggling Palestinian people. These artists are not being 'persecuted' for their views – they are being held to account for crossing a line. Nathan Hazlett, Sunderland From now on, only Christmas carols are allowed at Glastonbury! Samuel, Tooting You might not like Palestine Action, the protest group proscribed as a terrorist group by home secretary Yvette Cooper. Indeed, you might hate them but you have to admit they aren't terrorists. They don't have weapons or bombs. They've never hurt, never mind killed, anyone. What they've done is smash up a few assembly lines and broken some planes. Criminals they may be but terrorists they are not. This isn't about protecting people, it's about clamping down on dissent because the government knows it has lost the argument over Israel and Gaza. What these authoritarian politicians don't understand is that as soon as a new government comes in, it will use these laws to silence the people currently in charge. As for everyone else, we'll have long since lost any say in anything important by then. Rob Slater, Norfolk In reply to S Coyne (MetroTalk, Wed), who says Reform UK has nothing to offer working people. More Trending Reform says it will raise the threshold from where you start paying income tax to £20,000. So it is very much helping working people. Regarding the plan to offer non-doms a £250,000 'Britannia Card' to exempt them from paying tax on foreign assets, millionaires pay a lot in other taxes but they are leaving in droves. It's a good idea to do anything to stop that exodus. Timothy Triggs, Oxford Bob Jones (MetroTalk, Fri) says he's willing to show Brad Pitt around London after the superstar said he 'missed out on having a gay experience'. Well, Bob, I'm new in town and I may not be Brad Pitt but I could be the perfect fit. Or should this be in Rush Hour Crush..? Liam Gallagher issues update on soundcheck singing at Cardiff's Principality Stadium

Liam Gallagher issues update on soundcheck singing at Cardiff's Principality Stadium Some fans and locals believed they heard Liam Gallagher rehearsing at the Principality Stadium As Cardiff gears up to host the first Oasis reunion concerts many have heard soundchecks coming from the Principality Stadium. Now Liam appears to have jokingly confirmed the soundchecks are not actually the famous brothers – but then with Liam you never do know. Soundchecks could be heard, with the song Cigarettes and Alcohol playing, on Monday, June 30. Many believed this was Liam and Noel back together in the stadium for the first time in over 10 years. Now, replying to a video of the soundchecks, Liam said on X: "Mmm I'm not sure about the vocals there too aggressive he really needs to take a chill pill man he's just so angry all the time I don't know who he thinks he is as far as I'm concerned he's just a bigmouth from up north". A fan then asked Liam to "confirm or deny" if it was him rehearsing. Liam replied: "I've been in my pool all day doing under water farts so it's defo a recording from rehearsals unless there's 2 of me which I'm absolutely 1 million per cent here for well there for as well". Content cannot be displayed without consent As always with Liam he could be joking with fans, so maybe the brothers are in Cardiff after all, but this points to the duo not yet being in the Welsh capital. Follow live updates as Cardiff gets ready for the reunion here. Set-up at the Principality is already well under way, as seen in a seven-days-to-go video released last week, and a full soundcheck will be held later in the week. The Mirror has reported that Liam and Noel, plus new drummer Joey Waronker and guitarists Andy Bell, Gem Archer, and Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, will take the opportunity to make sure their performance is tip-top ahead of Friday and Saturday. A source close to the band told the Mirror: "With a new line-up and it being such a huge first show the boys will do some songs inside the venue too. "Some tours would start with a smaller show or take a week or two to get into the groove again but there is no time for that and also Liam and Noel want every night to be massive. "This is such a huge comeback show and they are taking it very seriously. It all points to it being an incredible comeback tour." Mirror's Daily Digest - from survival kit warning to cruise ship horror

In this Monday's Mirror Daily Digest, we've pulled together the biggest stories of the day from the government's advice on 72-hour emergency kits to the Disney Dream cruise ship horror Welcome to the Mirror's Daily Digest, where we'll be pulling together all the best stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Sport teams and more. This Monday, we're featuring everything from the government's advice to Brits on preparing a 72-hour emergency kit, through to the Disney cruise horror after a girl tumbled into the Atlantic Ocean. We've also got an exclusive with Coronation Street legend Sue Cleaver who addressed 'catfights' and 'fallouts' with her Loose Women co-star Denise Welch. Meanwhile, our Politics team broke the news that around 150,000 people will still be pushed into poverty under the watered-down welfare cuts. ‌ Full list of what every home needs in 72-hour survival kit ‌ Governments in both the UK and Europe have urged residents to assemble 72-hour emergency kits within their homes, filled with essential supplies that could sustain them for at least three days in times of crisis, our News team reports. In the UK, this message has been reinforced by the unveiling of the Prepare website by Oliver Dowden. This portal provides practical advice for ensuring households are better equipped to deal with various emergencies such as floods, power outages or pandemics. The website has outlined what the emergency kits should ideally contain, with items including non-perishable food, water, baby supplies, first aid kit, and a battery or wind-up radio. The UK government has acknowledged that buying all these items at once may prove challenging for some. Instead, the advice is to build up supplies gradually as and when possible, avoiding panic buying, reports the Daily Record. Loose Women star addresses 'catfights' and 'massive fallout' with Denise Welch There's never a dull moment on the Loose Women set, and show regular Sue Cleaver spoke exclusively to Love Sunday about the ITV programme. The Coronation Street icon said: "I love that show. It's brilliant. I've known all the girls for years, so, yeah." ‌ When quizzed on the speculation about women at war and in-fighting, Sue replied: "They always like to say 'catfights', but they only say that about women, don't they? They wouldn't dream of saying that when it's blokes presenting something. Actually we're very tight. But it happens a lot when Denise [Welch] and I are on together. "We've known each other for 25 years – we're close friends and have a sort of shorthand in the way we communicate. The press will say 'massive fallout', but I've never fallen out with Denise in my life! It's quite awful, we've still got so far to go that it's depressing." ‌ All 51 Premier League players out of contract today ahead of free transfer moves Our Sports team has been closely following the latest updates on June 30 cut-off point for football players whose deals had been due to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season. A total of 51 Premier League stars have just hours left on their existing contracts before becoming free agents or sealing free transfer moves, they wrote. Retained and released lists have been published, goodbyes have been said and lockers have been cleared out. Some players will already have their next move lined up while others enter the free agent market. ‌ Once the clock ticks past midnight and Tuesday begins, those out-of-contract stars are able to join a new club for free thanks to the Bosman rule. There's been some last-minute movement, though, as Friday saw Manchester United announce that goalkeeper Tom Heaton had signed a contract extension while it was confirmed that Everton captain Seamus Coleman had also signed a new deal. ‌ In other news, our Politics team broke that around 150,000 people will still be pushed into poverty under the government's watered-down welfare cuts, new modelling suggests. It comes after Keir Starmer offered major concessions last week after a rebellion over 120 Labour MPs threatened the government with defeat in the Commons. In a dramatic climbdown, the Prime Minister agreed to protect all existing claimants from losing Personal Independence Payments - a key disability benefit. The changes to PIP will now only apply to new claims from November 2026. But new modelling published by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) today says an additional 150,000 individuals will be in relative poverty after housing costs by the end of 2029-30. The modelling said the estimate does not include any "potential positive impact" from extra funding to support people with disabilities and long-term health conditions into work. ‌ Dad dives into sea after daughter falls overboard on Disney Dream cruise ship Finally, a dad dived into the waves after his young daughter fell overboard during a Disney Dream cruise in the Atlantic Ocean. Horrified passengers watched as a 'man overboard' alert was sounded and a major rescue effort launched. ‌ He managed to keep the terrified girl's head above water as crew members from the liner took to the seas in a rescue boat and battled to reach them. The drama took place as the $900m Disney Dream was on its return voyage to Fort Lauderdale from the Bahamas on Sunday. MailOnline reported passenger Dewayne Smith posted to Facebook: "We re on the Disney Dream at sea today and just witnessed a first on a cruise. A little girl fell overboard and her dad jumped overboard to try to save her. Man overboard calls went up immediately. The Disney crew went into action asap. Lots of praying folks on this ship! Both the little girl and dad were both successfully rescued."
