MPSE Bans Projects That Use Generative AI From Golden Reel Awards Consideration
The Motion Picture Sound Editors said Thursday that it will no longer consider projects in which Generative AI is used to create elements for the final soundtrack for the group's annual Golden Reel Awards.
The move comes the same day as members of animation, actor and writers guilds gathered at France's Annecy Animation Film Festival to protest the use of the growing technology, which has many in the creative industries wary about what AI means for their creativity, skills and livelihoods.

The MPSE's new rules surrounding GenAI will be added to the guidelines for the next Golden Reels, the annual awards ceremony that honors outstanding achievement in sound editing, sound design, music editing and Foley artistry in film, television and gaming.
'We support and prize technological advances that assist artists in their creations,' the MPSE said in a press release today announcing the move. 'However, standards for the legal and ethical use of Generative A.I. have yet to be established and are far from being accepted broadly. What we choose to promote as award-worthy points to how much we value the human endeavor of artistic creation.'
The MPSE added that its board of directors and A.I. committee are 'poised to evolve our stance on this issue' and pledged to 'remain open to what the technological future may bring in support of the humans working in the craft of sound editorial.'
'It is an enormous question to ask: how much of our humanity are we willing to give away to technology, especially in the arts?' MPSE president David Barber said. 'The time to ponder that question, set up boundaries, and guide how A.I. is assimilated into our workflow and lives was yesterday. The dam of A.I. has broken, and the waters are upon us. Choosing what we embrace as award-worthy filmmaking is a way of diverting those waters while we grapple with this exponential change. As A.I. technology infiltrates and permeates our industry, rules and accepted practices for its use need to emerge that keep artists at the forefront.'

Cooper claimed that attempts to distance herself from Feldman resulted in less playing time. Lawyers warned Cooper and her parents that the school would 'drag out' a complaint for years, and the university did not respond to documentation of Feldman's misconduct, Cooper said, per reports. Cooper played for Boston University from 2013 to 2015. Feldman retired in 2022. Cooper returned to campus for the filming of the documentary. 'The minute I stepped back on that field, I felt so small,' Cooper said as she broke into tears during the Q&A and got a roaring ovation of support. 'I just felt like I was 18 years old again, and I was in a situation with someone in a position of power who abused their power, and I felt like I wasn't the 'Call Her Daddy' girl. I wasn't someone who had money and influence or whatever. I was just another woman who experienced harassment on a level that changed my life forever and took away the thing I loved the most.' Cooper once credited the still-undisclosed trauma for guiding her into podcasting, where she averages millions of listeners per episode. She also joined NBC for its coverage of the Paris Olympics last summer.

Hornell's Bill Pullman returning to Lone Starr role for 'Spaceballs' sequel: Report
The "Schwartz" is still strong with Bill Pullman. The 71-year-old Hornell native and Hollywood star has signed on to reprise one of his earliest and most iconic big screen roles – the Han Solo-esque Lone Starr in a sequel to the 1987 comedy spoof 'Spaceballs.' Amazon MGM Studios announced in a June 12 release the legendary Mel Brooks, 98, will return as Yogurt, the keeper of the power known as The Schwartz in the 'Star Wars' parody, which became a cult classic. Following the Amazon MGM Studios announcement, Deadline reported both Pullman and Rick Moranis, who starred as the Darth Vader-wannabe Dark Helmet in the film, are returning for the sequel. The late John Candy had a memorable turn in the original movie as Lone Starr's hilarious sidekick, half-man, half-dog, Barf. There's been no word from the movie team on how Barf's character will be handled, but it's difficult to imagine anyone filling Candy's barking performance. The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum from a script by "Frozen" star Josh Gad (also a producer), Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, according to Amazon MGM. The film is scheduled to hit movie theaters in 2027. Plot details are currently under wraps. Pullman has built an impressive film and television career since being cast as the reluctant space hero, only his second role in a feature film after 1986's "Ruthless People." Pullman's notable screen credits include "While You Were Sleeping," "Independence Day," "The Accidental Tourist," and "Casper." On the small screen, Pullman has starred over three seasons as Detective Harry Ambrose in the critically acclaimed series "The Sinner."
