EastEnders fans 'rumble' Christmas plot as favourite 'killed off' after 33 years
EastEnders fans are convinced that a beloved Walford resident is going to die over the festive period after a heartbreaking health diagnosis was confirmed earlier this year
EastEnders viewers reckon they've sussed out a gut-wrenching Christmas plot that's bound to leave the audience in bits.
Beloved character Nigel Bates, portrayed by Paul Bradley, won over the fans' hearts when he first appeared on the Square in 1992.
After an original stint of six years concluding in 1998, Nigel made a dramatic comeback on Christmas Eve 2024 following a 26-year hiatus.
However, it was heartbreakingly disclosed that Nigel is grappling with early onset dementia, and recent episodes have shown his memory lapses increasing, causing concern for his mate Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).
Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) recently popped by Phil's place to recommend that he gets additional support for Nigel, advice which Phil stubbornly shrugged off despite being Nigel's oldest pal, reports Belfast Live.
Complications arose when Nigel agreed to assist little Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown) with her school story project but found the trip down memory lane painfully challenging.
Phil's worries spiked after discovering Nigel with Lexi, who in his confusion, he mistook for his daughter Claire Bates (Gemma Bissix).
With Nigel's condition evidently worsening, the EastEnders community fears that the cherished character might tragically pass away during the yuletide season.
Social media has been buzzing with speculation, as one viewer posted: "They aren't going to drag his Dementia storyline on for long. I suspect Nigel is a definite death for Christmas."
Another echoed: "I think Nigel will die at christmas tbh and it's going to be heartbreaking."
And a third pondered: "I sadly think Nigel could die and it will be a teary Christmas."
Paul Bradley, who plays Nigel in the series, opened up about his character's "experiencing a slow decline".
"Things have started to happen that are understandably very confusing for him," he shared.
Adding further, he said: "He often mistakes things in his past for the present day, and his memories are disjointed. When that happens, it is also incredibly upsetting for those around him."
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 6am

Call The Midwife 'axed' after 15 years with final season set for 2026
Call The Midwife is reportedly set to come to an end after 15 years on the BBC. The beloved BBC period drama confirmed that series 15 filming was underway in May, with eight hour long episodes on their way to fans. The broadcaster has also confirmed the show will have a two-part Christmas special, set in Hong Kong and Poplar, which will arrive on BBC One and iPlayer in January 2026. Yet it has now been reported that will be the show's swansong after first hitting screens in September 2012, with the cast having already filmed their final scenes. Call the Midwife bosses are said to want the show to 'go out on a high', according to a report in The Daily Star. 'After years of drama and countless births, Call The Midwife is coming to an end,' a source told the publication. 'The team have decided it's time to draw the show to a close and bow out. This is the last we'll see of these much-loved characters. Storylines will tie up a lot of loose ends.' However, if this is to be the end of Call the Midwife there's a glimmer of hope for fans yet. The BBC has already confirmed that the world of Nonnatus House will be expanding, with a prequel TV series on the way. The new show will still be set in Poplar, but during the Second World War, and will begin production in 2026. In even more good news for longtime fans, BBC Film and production company Neal Street are making a Call the Midwife film, which will be set overseas in 1972 and feature much-loved characters from the original show. The new projects will be written, created and produced by the all-female team behind Call the Midwife, including showrunner Heidi Thomas and executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank. The BBC said further details about the prequel series will be shared with fans later this year. Creator and writer Heidi Thomas said in a statement: 'The opening of new doors at Nonnatus House feels profoundly emotional, and yet just right. More Trending I have never run out of stories for our midwives, and I never will. But having wept, laughed, and raged my way from 1957 to 1971, I found myself yearning to delve into the deeper past. 'There will be so much in the prequel for our wonderful, loyal fans, including the appearance of some familiar (if much younger!) faces.' View More » Metro contacted the BBC for comment. Got a story? Emmerdale confirms Joe Absolom's first big storyline - and it spells trouble
Back in May we learned that soap legend Joe Absolom was making his way to the Dales for a huge new storyline and now we've learned it's going to be as dark as we'd hoped! Not that we want anything to happen our beloved Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), but he's in for bad time when Ray shows up in town. Ray has been slated to pop up as an old contact of Mackenzie's and is set to be 'charismatic and charming' but with a 'dark and villainous side', so right from the outset we know it's going to be a meaty one and we've been waiting for bated breath to see exactly how Joe's arrival is going to play out. Well, this is the week we get our first glimpse of Ray it's bad for Mack straight off the bat. And it's all down to Mack getting himself involved in Lewis Barton's (Bradley Riches) marijuana plants. Lewis had to shift his haul of weed to a deserted barn after being kicked out of his flat, but he had to do so with the help of Ross (Michael Parr) and Mack, which immediately put him in their debt. What an opportunity for this hapless pair – who started setting out the terms and demanding a cut of Lewis' crop, planning to sell the plants to a proper dealer. Lewis was dead against this, stating that the plants were to help people who really need it for medicinal purposes. With him still unconvinced, Ross tries to win him over and Mack lays on the emotional pressure of reminding him it's to help Moira (Natalie J Robb). Ross concedes and agrees to do things Lewis' way, but Mack is not so easily swayed. Instead of agreeing to Lewis' terms, Mack arranges his own deal behind both their backs – with Ray. He reveals his plan, and Lewis is struck down by the betrayal, believing his brother to have been behind it too. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers?
