Land hurdles cleared, two more Southern Peripheral Road links set for completion

Time of Indiaa day ago

Gurgaon: In a relief to thousands of commuters in new sectors along Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), GMDA has moved forward on two long-pending stretches — one between sectors 71 and 73 and another between sectors 62 and 65 — that remained incomplete for years due to land hurdles.
After receiving the possession of a 5.9-acre land parcel earlier this month, the authority is now set to take up construction of a 350m stretch between sectors 71 and 73, which is estimated to cost Rs 2.22 crore.
Though the master road in the area was laid in 2021, this unfinished patch continued as a hurdle in connectivity, forcing commuters to take long detours. Now, clearance of land has paved the way not only for the construction of roads, but also for utility services like master water storm drain, and sewerage network in the area, officials said.
Alongside this, the authority is also working on a 170-metre missing link between sectors 62 and 65. This project too, with an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore, was in limbo for several years due to land hurdles.
"Construction was pending due to land issues. Now that they have been resolved, we can move forward. Tenders will be floated once the estimates are approved," a senior GMDA official said.
This comes weeks after GMDA CEO Shyamal Misra directed officials to prepare estimates on clearance of bottlenecks in road links in all sectors.

Meanwhile, residents, who long complained of a lack of seamless connectivity, said the development came as a relief. "We have been waiting for these links to be completed for years. With new housing projects coming up in the area, the pressure on our road is only going to increase," said Vaibhav Chauhan, a resident of Sector 71.

Dreamliner to disaster: AI171 crash adds to Boeing's tryst with troubles

NEW DELHI: Once a crown jewel of American innovation, Boeing's reputation nosedived after a series of safety failures in recent decades. Founded over a century ago as the gold standard in aviation, the company now faces unprecedented scrutiny as its aircraft, once synonymous with reliability, have suffered multiple catastrophic failures. These tragedies have not only shattered public trust but also triggered alarm among global regulators, raising existential questions about the company's commitment to safety. In the most recent incident, Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed in Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers. While its cause is yet to be ascertained and there is no reason to believe it was due to a manufacturing or design fault, the tragedy added to global concerns after multiple safety incidents involving Boeing aircraft. Boeing's most advanced widebody aircraft is under the lens at a time when the company is still addressing quality control issues across its product line. India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), on Friday directed Air India to carry out additional maintenance check on the Dreamliners in the aftermath of the crash. In a letter to Air India, the regulator listed out the checks the airliner will have to carry out on all of its Boeing 787-8/9 fleet, starting Sunday. Air India on Saturday said it has done onetime safety checks on nine of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners and is on track to complete the checks on the remaining 24 such planes. In all, Air India has 33 Dreamliners. The Tata Group airline shared that some of these checks could lead to higher turnaround times and potential delays on certain long-haul routes, especially those to airports with operating curfews. Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg said that a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Boeing stated that they will defer to AAIB to provide information about Air India Flight 171, in adherence with the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization protocol.
