
Brits urged to avoid common sunscreen mistake as temperatures soar in fourth UK heatwave
Temperatures are set to reach 34C this week in what is set to be the the fourth UK heatwave of the summer. As amber health alerts are issued around the UK, travel experts at Alpine Elements explained how people can embrace the sun rather than being toasted by it.
People often remember to use sunscreen but only consider applying it once. However, even high factor suncreams are not as effective after a few hours in the sun, especially if you have been swimming or sweating or towel-drying.
The experts said: "Applying sunscreen just once isn't enough, especially in hot climates where UV levels are high. We see people put it on before breakfast and assume they're protected all day - but by midday that initial layer has worn away."
Sweating or swimming also exposes your skin to the sun due to the breakdown of the product, so experts have said to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours in intense sunlight and straight after swimming or sweating excessively.
Reapply even if you're using a high SPF
SPF measures the protection against UVB rays - the rays that cause sunburn, but not measure UVA protection - the rays that contribute to ageing of the skin and long-term damaging effects.
People often assume that a sunscreen with high SPF allows them to stay out in the sun for a longer time and not need to reapply, however this is not the case.
Sunscreen must have a broad spectrum with protection from both UVA and UVB and reapplied regularly in order to be fully protected. Make sure to reapply SPF during the UK heatwave as well as during your travels to hot, tropical countries abroad but also when experiencing the UK heatwave.

A spokesperson from Alpine Elements explained that if your skin is unprotected and the UV index is "double or triple what you're used to" this can mean that "unprotected skin can start burning in under 15 minutes."
They conclude that "sun safety isn't just about avoiding discomfort - it's about protecting your skin for the future. A few extra minutes spent reapplying sunscreen can save you weeks of pain or years of damage."

'My baby was born with a fatal illness but a tiny umbrella saved his life'
Little Toby Wornham was diagnosed with an extremely rare life-threatening condition while still in his mother's womb, and was only saved thanks to a pioneering treatment Smiling Toby Wornham looks the picture of health, but he is one of only 50 people in the world known to have an ultra rare heart condition. After his heart defect was detected during mum Jenny Wornham's 20 week scan, his life was saved by a tiny umbrella-like device. Jenny tells The Mirror: 'We feel very lucky. If you met Toby, you wouldn't know what he has been through.' Jenny, 30, who lives in Hampshire with her shipping manager husband Connor, 31, Toby and their eldest son, Arthur, four, says doctors picked up a problem and identified an extra pulmonary blood vessel during her scan, which was diverting blood away from her unborn baby's lungs and putting an impossible strain on his heart. ''It was such a shock when we heard what was wrong with Toby. We had been so thrilled when I had fallen pregnant with him and Arthur was so excited to be getting a sibling. 'But now we were being told that he had a life-threatening issue with his heart and we didn't know what the future was going to hold.' The tot was diagnosed with a condition called pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) - an abnormal connection between pulmonary arteries and veins in the lungs. It leads to reduced oxygen levels in the blood and potential blood clots, leading to strokes. It's so rare that the hospital cardiologist told the couple he had only seen one case like it in his career, with fewer than 50 such cases known of across the globe. Miraculously, the condition was only detected because Toby was so wriggly in his mum's womb that the sonographer had to take extra time with the scan - and spotted something wasn't right. 'It was a miracle it was picked up on the scan at all. It would have been life threatening for him if he'd been born without being diagnosed first,' says Jenny, who runs her own art business. Jenny was referred to Southampton General Hospital, where she was monitored until Toby was born in October 2024, weighing 7Ib 10oz. Surgeons were hoping he would get to five days old before he needed lifesaving surgery, but at just three days old his condition deteriorated. Medics operated immediately, inserting a tiny 7mm cocktail umbrella-like device known as an MVP. The appliance is designed to expand within the body, plugging Toby's extra blood vessel, in order to stop blood flow and relieve pressure on his heart. It will remain in him for life. 'He was so tiny, and to see him needing surgery was heartbreaking. When he came back up after the operation it was traumatic - he was covered in tubes and wires.' But after ten days in hospital, Toby was allowed home. He has now made a full recovery - although initially, took aspirin daily to keep his blood thin. Doctors will continue to monitor his progress over the coming months. 'Toby idolises his brother; the two of them have such an incredible bond,' smiled Jenny. 'And now we're looking forward to the future with our miracle boy.'

Second person dies after 'toxic broccoli' in sandwich as vegetable recalled
Tamara D'Acunto passed away after eating a panini she'd bought at a food truck. A woman has become the second death victim of a poisoning outbreak - after eating a sandwich that she bought from a food truck for her lunch. Tamara D'Acunto was rushed to hospital after eating the snack but was unable to recover from the poisoned panini, which contained the 'contaminated' vegetable. It comes after musician and artist Luigi Di Sarno suffered the same tragic fate. The 52-year-old bought a broccoli and sausage sandwich on the Diamante seafront in the province of Cosenza and later passed away. The Mirror reports Tara had also bought her lunch from a food truck in southwest Italy. Eight others were rushed to hospital, including members of Mr Di Sarno's family. Broccoli has been recalled across Italy following the outbreak and the food truck where the sandwiches were made has also been seized. It comes amid a growing botulism outbreak caused by the toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. The country is on high alert after the Paola Public Prosecutor's Office demanding an 'immediate seizure of a commercial product'. A statement following the death of Mr Di Sarno was issued by the authorities last Thursday. The release, from Calabria Region's Department of Health and Welfare, read: "The emergency procedure established in these cases has been activated, which requires immediate notification to the Poison Control Center in Pavia." It stated is "the only national centre designated for the management of botulism" and added: "No region or hospital in the country is authorised to store the antivenom in their own facilities. "This serum, however, is exclusively available to the Ministry of Health, which holds it in designated secure locations and distributes it only through the Lombardy Poison Control Centre. "The first two vials, used for the first patients, were sent directly from the Military Pharmacy in Taranto. However, as the number of cases increased, additional supplies became necessary. "Yesterday, the Calabria Region, through Azienda Zero, provided a 118 aircraft that flew to the San Camillo Hospital in Rome, where the ministry had centralised additional vials of the antivenom to facilitate distribution." Early intervention with antitoxin and supportive care like mechanical ventilation is critical. How to avoid botulism? 1. Be cautious with oils, herbs and low-acid food Botulism can thrive in low-acid environments like homemade oils infused with herbs or vegetables - especially when stored at room temperature. Always refrigerate such products and use them within four days. 2. Reject suspicious canned goods Never consume food from bulging, dented, or leaking cans and jars. Even items without obvious spoilage can hide invisible, deadly toxins. 3. Use proper pressure canning techniques If you make your own preserves, especially with low-acid foods like vegetables and meats, always use a pressure canner, not a boiling-water bath. Pressure canning reaches temperatures high enough to destroy botulinum spores. 4. Acidify when can canning tomatoes Tomatoes vary in acidity and may not always be safe. To ensure they're preserved safely, add bottled lemon juice or citric acid so the pH stays at or below 4.6. Serious Eats 5. Heat everything thoroughly Botulinum toxin can be destroyed by heating food to above 85C for at least five minutes. This is especially important for home-canned low-acid foods. 6.
