Indo-Pak conflict: Sitharaman asks banks to ensure uninterrupted services
Banking services, both physical and digital, must function without disruption and glitches, she said, adding that emergency protocols should be updated and tested to handle any contingencies.
Addressing a meeting of CEO of banks and insurance companies on cybersecurity preparedness, the finance minister stressed the critical role of the banking and financial sector in ensuring economic stability in challenging times.
New Delhi, May 9 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday asked banks to remain vigilant and take all steps to ensure uninterrupted services to customers in view of heightened military conflict between India and Pakistan.
She advised banks to ensure the safety of bank employees and their families working at branches along the border areas.
Sitharaman also directed banks to ensure their adequate safety by effectively coordinating with the security agencies, the finance ministry said in a statement after the high-level meeting.
It was attended by top officials of banks and insurance companies and senior officials from the Department of Financial Services (Ministry of Finance), CERT-In, RBI, Irdai and NPCI.
She also asked banks to ensure that citizens and businesses do not suffer under any circumstances, and priority must be given to seamless cash availability at ATMs, uninterrupted UPI and internet banking services, and continued access to essential banking facilities.
Earlier in the day, public sector banks, including State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank, said their ATMs are fully functional, well-stocked, and that digital services are operating smoothly.
Sitharaman reiterated that the government is firmly committed to national security and economic stability, noting that the country's banking and financial system remains robust and resilient.
During the meeting, the finance minister reviewed operational and cybersecurity preparedness, including digital public-facing applications like internet banking and UPI.
Bank MDs and CEOs informed that cybersecurity measures have been reinforced throughout the banking system. Anti-DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) systems have been implemented by banks to protect against massive cyberattacks, the statement said.
To guarantee institutional readiness, mock drills have been held covering cybersecurity and disaster recovery scenarios at the highest levels, it said, adding that they apprised that phishing attempts are being actively watched, and staff members have received several internal alerts to increase awareness.
Bank officials stated that their Security Operations Centre (SOC) and Network Operations Centres are fully operational and on high alert, it said.
These centres are coordinating closely with CERT-In and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), facilitating real-time data sharing and threat monitoring, it added.
To meet any eventuality, Sitharaman directed banks to conduct regular audits of their cybersecurity systems and data centres and ensure that all digital and core-banking infrastructure is fully firewalled and monitored around the clock to prevent breaches or any hostile cyber activity.
She instructed banks to designate two dedicated senior officials identified at the headquarters, one for reporting all cyber-related matters and the other to ensure operational matters, including the functioning of bank branches and the availability of cash in ATMs.
Both dedicated officers should report any incident to CERT-In/relevant agencies and DFS on a real-time basis, the statement said.
In this regard, it said, banks were also asked to coordinate in real time with the Reserve Bank of India, CERT-In and relevant government agencies to ensure robust and agile information exchange and response.
As regards the insurance sector, the finance minister asked insurance companies to ensure timely claim settlements and uninterrupted customer service.
Sitharaman also said the Sponsor Banks should ensure that RRBs are well-supported during these times and hand-hold them for any issues that they are facing. PTI DP CS DP BAL BAL

India's extreme poverty rate dropped sharply to 5.3% due to free, subsidised food transfers: World Bank data shows
New Delhi, Jun 7 (PTI) India's extreme poverty rate declined sharply to 5.3 per cent over a decade from 27.1 per cent in 2011-12 even as the World Bank revised upwards its threshold poverty line to USD 3 per day. Given India's inflation rate between 2017 and 2021, a revised extreme poverty line of USD 3 would constitute a 15 per cent higher threshold than USD 2.15 expressed in 2021 prices and result in a 5.3 per cent poverty rate in 2022-23, the World Bank said in a report. In India, the report said, 54,695,832 people lived on less than USD 3 per day in 2024. Thus, the poverty rate at USD 3 per day (2021 PPP -- percentage population) is 5.44 per cent in 2024. The extreme poverty rate decreased from 16.2 to 2.3 per cent between 2011-12 and 2022-23, while the poverty rate at the lower middle income country (LMIC) line declined by 33.7 percentage points, it said. Free and subsidised food transfers supported poverty reduction, and the rural-urban poverty gap narrowed. The five most populous states account for 54 per cent of the extremely poor, it said. With regard to economy, the report said, real GDP of India was around 5 per cent below the pre-pandemic trend level as of FY25. Growth should gradually converge back to potential over 2027-28 assuming the current global uncertainties are resolved in an orderly fashion, it said. "The outlook, however, is subject to significant downside risks, as policy shifts may continue to unfold globally. Elevated trade tensions would dampen demand for India's exports and further delay the recovery in investment," it said. The current account deficit is expected to average around 1.2 per cent of GDP over FY26-28 and remain adequately financed by capital inflows, it said, adding that foreign exchange reserves are projected to remain stable around 16 per cent of GDP. India has lifted 171 million people from extreme poverty in the decade between 2011-12 and 2022-23, the World Bank said. "Over the past decade, India has significantly reduced poverty. Extreme poverty (living on less than USD 2.15 per day) fell from 16.2 per cent in 2011-12 to 2.3 per cent in 2022-23, lifting 171 million people above this line, the World Bank had said in its 'Poverty & Equity Brief' on India in April. The rural extreme poverty dropped from 18.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent, and urban from 10.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent, narrowing the rural-urban gap from 7.7 to 1.7 percentage points a 16 per cent annual decline, it had said.

Sambhal violence: Posters with photos of absconding suspects to be displayed in other UP districts
Posters of the absconding persons accused in the Sambhal violence case will be displayed in other districts of Uttar Pradesh, PTI reported. The properties of the persons accused wanted in the matter will also be attached, the news agency quoted Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar as saying on Friday. Kumar added that raids were being conducted at several locations to arrest the persons. The police had in February put up posters with photos of 74 persons suspected to be involved in the violence that erupted in November. The photos were displayed at several spots in Sambhal for residents to identify the persons accused in the matter and help authorities find them. On November 24, violence broke out in Sambhal after a group of Muslims objected to a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Chandausi town. A trial court had ordered the survey in a suit claiming that the mosque had been built in 1526 by Mughal ruler Babar on the site of the 'centuries-old Shri Hari Har Temple dedicated to Lord Kalki'. Five persons were killed in the violence during the survey. In December, the district administration said that posters of those allegedly involved in the violence will be put up on public walls. Additionally, the Uttar Pradesh government had said that it will make those involved in the violence pay for the damage to public property and display their pictures on public walls. The police have registered eight first information reports against 150 persons and 2,500 other unidentified individuals suspected to be involved in the violence. Several persons were arrested for allegedly throwing stones at the police during the violence. In 2020, the Uttar Pradesh government had put up posters of individuals allegedly involved in vandalism during the protests against the contentious Citizen Amendment Act, before the Allahabad High Court forced them to be taken down, The Hindu reported.

Bihar Governor visits Khan Sir's coaching institute on Eid-al-Adha
Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Saturday (June 7, 2025) visited the coaching institute of popular educator Khan Sir in Patna on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha. 'Khan Sir', whose full name is Faizal Khan, runs the Khan GS Research Centre in the city. 'I've seen 'Khan Sir' on YouTube…this young man is doing great job and so many blessings must pour for him out of hearts of poor students who can't afford fees. All my thanks and good wishes to him. May God grant him the power to do greater work so he can create more students like him who serve society with compassion,' Mr. Khan told media persons following the visit. 'One day I'll also come to interact with his students in the institute,' he added, while recalling how a poor student had recently approached him after securing a government job. VIDEO | Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan visits Khan Sir's Coaching Institute in Patna. (Full video available on PTI Videos - — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) June 7, 2025 Mr. Khan, who recently hosted a wedding reception attended by several prominent figures from the city, said, 'The Governor came here today as part of the Eid-al-Adha celebrations. He wanted to see the classroom and, getting on the stage, he said one day he wants to address students as well. He also said that our culture should be preserved as western culture is dominating India and Indian culture is fading away. We have to preserve our heritage.' 'Every festival should be celebrated with love,' asserted the Governor during his interaction. The Governor and Mr. Khan also discussed the recent case of the rape and death of a minor girl in Muzaffarpur. 'I spoke to the Governor about this…such people (the alleged rapists) should be boycotted but what do you expect when even rapists get good lawyers in the country? I request the lawyers of the country that if all the lawyers unite, so that if someone has committed rape, acid attack, burnt a woman to death, kidnapping, then they will not get a good lawyer. Such incidents should be brought under the category of treason. The Governor was also very concerned about this matter,' Mr. Khan said. Earlier, in the wake of the July 2024 incident in Delhi, where several students died in a flooded basement of an IAS coaching centre, the Patna district administration conducted a survey of coaching institutes in August. The Khan GS Research Centre was among those flagged for violations. 'The number of students at the coaching institute had exceeded the available space,' District Magistrate Shrikant Kundlik Khandelkar had said, adding that under the Bihar Coaching Institute (Control and Regulation) norms, 'it was a violation of the norm.'
