Aroma Singh was accompanied by Akash Kumar Jaiswal, Divisional Security Commissioner (DSC) of Guntakal Division, and K Rajagopala Reddy, Assistant Security Commissioner (ASC). As part of the visit, a comprehensive presentation on redevelopment progress was given by Deputy Chief Engineer Vamana Moorthy highlighting construction milestones and enhancements to passenger amenities.
The security review focused on critical areas including the expansion of CCTV surveillance networks, upgradation of security tools such as Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs), baggage scanners, and walkie-talkies. Officials also evaluated strategies to ensure smooth passenger and vehicular flow within the station premises. A proposal to deploy drone-based surveillance to monitor crowd movement, yard activity, and night-time security was also deliberated during the session.
The IG stressed the importance of adopting proactive, technology-driven security measures and enhancing coordination among various departments to ensure seamless safety operations. Following the site review, she chaired a detailed meeting with Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) inspectors from the Renigunta sub-division to assess the handling of high-value theft cases involving passengers.

Two school girls go missing, located in Jammu-bound train
Jamshedpur: Two students of the Kadma-based River View School, who had gone missing reportedly from near the school gate on Wednesday, were located on the Tatanagar-Jammu Tawi Express late in the night, police said. Officer in-charge of the Kadma police station Alok Dubey said, "We have alerted the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and are coordinating with the two agencies for the safe return of the two girls from the Bokaro Steel City station." Earlier in the day, the missing report of the 12-year-old and 13-year-old residents of Shastrinagar in Kadma and Dhatkidih in Bistupur went viral on social media. Palakkad division launches initiative to ensure safe travel for women passengers
As part of the ongoing 'Meri Saheli' initiative, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Palakkad division has intensified its efforts to ensure safe and secure travel for female passengers, particularly those travelling alone on trains. Dedicated RPF teams have been deployed at five major stations in the division to identify solo women travellers, sensitise them about safety precautions, and share emergency contact details, including the Rail Madad helpline (139) and digital grievance redressal platforms such as Instagram and the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS). This apart, the Railways has leveraged modern technology to enhance the safety of women passengers. Passenger feedback is also being collected to further strengthen the programme, officials said. Security measures Madhukar Roat, Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager, said that the safety and security of passengers, particularly women travelling alone, is of paramount importance. 'With initiatives like Meri Saheli and strengthened security measures across stations and trains, we are committed to ensuring that every journey is safe, secure, and comfortable. These efforts are being continuously reinforced through the dedication of the RPF personnel and the cooperation of the passengers,' he said. A total of 64 women RPF personnel have been nominated for the mission, with an average of 11 officers attending designated trains each day. They interact with nearly 230 solo women passengers daily. In 2025 alone, the initiative has benefited 37,276 women passengers and has received widespread appreciation. Security has also been tightened across the division with additional measures. All major night trains are now escorted by mixed RPF teams equipped with body-worn cameras to ensure safety and accountability. Joint RPF-Government Railway Police (GRP) patrols during peak hours and intensified surprise checks in ladies' coaches have been carried out, leading to the apprehension of 971 offenders this year. Helpline The officials said that publicising the Rail Madad helpline contributed to timely interventions. In 2025, 38 complaints were lodged through the helpline and were resolved promptly, with offenders either detained or arrested. The RPF has appealed to passengers to cooperate with the security personnel, follow safety guidelines, and use official platforms to report concerns. The division reiterated its commitment to strengthening women's safety across the network and ensuring that every journey remains safe, secure, and comfortable.

A Facebook friendship ends in murder
Berhampur: What began as a virtual friendship on Facebook in 2019 ended in a spine-chilling tale of betrayal and murder at Sreema Nagar here. The case, which has shaken Ganjam district, unfolded when 32-year-old Chitrasen Swain lodged a complaint on August 11 stating the brutal killing of his sister, Gayatri Swain, and the grievous attack on her 11-year-old daughter, Neelam. According to police, the accused, initially identified as Sunil Swain (27), had developed a secret relationship with Gayatri while working in Mumbai. Despite her marriage to Sadhu Charan Swain, their bond grew intimate, leading to a turbulent chapter of elopement, estrangement and reconciliation. However, as misunderstandings brewed, Gayatri began distancing herself by ignoring his calls and choosing her family over him. On the fateful night of August 10, filled with rage and humiliation, the accused barged into her rented home at Sreema Nagar, where a heated quarrel turned fatal. Armed with a sharp weapon, he mercilessly attacked Gayatri, killing her on the spot. He then assaulted young Neelam and presuming her to be dead, fled the spot past midnight. The next morning, suspicion by the house owner revealed the ghastly crime. Neelam was rushed to MKCG Hospital before being shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in a critical condition. The CCTV footage became the key to tracing the culprit, leading to a dramatic arrest at Wadi Railway Station in Karnataka on August 16 with the support of RPF personnel, said Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M on Tuesday. The accused was produced before the Civil Judge & JMFC Court at Sedam, Chittapur and then brought to Odisha on transit remand, the SP said. In a shocking twist, investigators later discovered that the accused's true identity was Santanu Patra (29) of Balasore district. He was already wanted in heinous 2019 POCSO rape case involving his cousins. Living under a false name, he had absconded to Mumbai, where he met Gayatri through Facebook, setting in motion the tragic chain of events. Police have secured his remand for further investigation, even as Berhampur continues to reel under the shadow of this heart-wrenching crime where love, deception and violence fatally collided.
