Palakkad division launches initiative to ensure safe travel for women passengers
Dedicated RPF teams have been deployed at five major stations in the division to identify solo women travellers, sensitise them about safety precautions, and share emergency contact details, including the Rail Madad helpline (139) and digital grievance redressal platforms such as Instagram and the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS).
This apart, the Railways has leveraged modern technology to enhance the safety of women passengers. Passenger feedback is also being collected to further strengthen the programme, officials said.
Security measures
Madhukar Roat, Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager, said that the safety and security of passengers, particularly women travelling alone, is of paramount importance. 'With initiatives like Meri Saheli and strengthened security measures across stations and trains, we are committed to ensuring that every journey is safe, secure, and comfortable. These efforts are being continuously reinforced through the dedication of the RPF personnel and the cooperation of the passengers,' he said.
A total of 64 women RPF personnel have been nominated for the mission, with an average of 11 officers attending designated trains each day. They interact with nearly 230 solo women passengers daily. In 2025 alone, the initiative has benefited 37,276 women passengers and has received widespread appreciation.
Security has also been tightened across the division with additional measures. All major night trains are now escorted by mixed RPF teams equipped with body-worn cameras to ensure safety and accountability. Joint RPF-Government Railway Police (GRP) patrols during peak hours and intensified surprise checks in ladies' coaches have been carried out, leading to the apprehension of 971 offenders this year.
Helpline
The officials said that publicising the Rail Madad helpline contributed to timely interventions. In 2025, 38 complaints were lodged through the helpline and were resolved promptly, with offenders either detained or arrested.
The RPF has appealed to passengers to cooperate with the security personnel, follow safety guidelines, and use official platforms to report concerns. The division reiterated its commitment to strengthening women's safety across the network and ensuring that every journey remains safe, secure, and comfortable.

How the incident unfolded On Tuesday afternoon (August 19), 15-year-old Nayan, a Class 10 student, was heading home after the school bell rang. But just as he stepped out of the Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad's Khokhra, he was confronted by a group of boys, including a Class 8 junior, NDTV reported. He has since been detained under the Juvenile Justice Act, and an FIR has been filed. As for the motive, there are conflicting accounts. We are checking CCTV footage of the crime scene to verify if there has been any destruction of evidence. While the primary accused juvenile was detained yesterday, another juvenile is also being questioned.' Meanwhile, the District Education Officer (city), Rohit Chaudhary, issued a notice to the school management, seeking a detailed explanation. 'The school has been asked to clarify how this incident unfolded, where the security staff were positioned, and why no immediate action was taken. If the attack happened outside, how did the blood-soaked victim return inside the premises without prompt assistance from the management?' he told the news outlet. Brazil's lower house approves law expanding social media protections for minors
Social media regulation has become a thorny political issue in the South American nation, with leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva warning this week that 'society will be under constant threat without regulation of big tech' Brazil's lower house approved legislation on Wednesday expanding requirements for digital platforms to protect minors, after a prominent social media influencer allegedly sexually exploited a child. The measure includes stricter age verification systems and mandates that the accounts of children under 16 be linked to their parents' law takes effect one year after the president's assent and must receive final approval from the Senate. Social media regulation has become a thorny political issue in the South American nation, with leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva warning this week that 'society will be under constant threat without regulation of big tech.' Right-wing opposition parties have accused the government and judiciary of seeking to 'censor' online platforms. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The legislation was passed by a wide margin after public outrage over alleged child sexual exploitation by Hytalo Santos, a well-known influencer who posted content on Instagram featuring partially naked minors taking part in suggestive dances. Santos was arrested last week as part of an investigation into 'exposure with sexual connotations' to adolescents, and his Instagram account is no longer available. Steep fines Under the new rules, social networks must report suspected exploitative or sexually abusive content to Brazilian authorities and link the accounts of minors to parental controls. Platforms will be required to 'monitor and restrict, within the limits of their technical capabilities, content that is clearly intended to attract children,' according to the legislation. Brazil's Congress rejected self-declaration as an age verification method following expert recommendations, instead requiring social networks to 'continuously improve their age verification mechanisms.' Companies violating the provisions face fines up to 50 million reais ($9 million), suspensions, or bans for repeat offenders. Brazil has emerged as one of the world's most active countries in social media regulation. Courts suspended X for 40 days last year over non-compliance with anti-disinformation orders. The government on Monday asked US tech giant Meta to rid its platforms of chatbots that mimic children and can make sexually suggestive remarks, after detecting their 'proliferation' across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In a June ruling, Brazil's Supreme Court ordered tech companies to assume greater responsibility for user-generated content. Early this year, the court ordered video platform Rumble to be suspended after it refused to block a Brazilian-American user's account.

Massive Protest In Ahmedabad Over School Murder, Over 500 Booked For Vandalism
The protests against the murder of a Class 10 student by a junior at a private school in Ahmedabad continued on Friday, with the student wing of the opposition Congress alleging negligence by authorities and demanding closure of the institute. The students of Seventh Day Adventist School and their parents also held a protest, holding placards, and alleging regular instances of thefts, arguments and brawls on the premises. They alleged inaction despite complaints. The developments came a day after a mob ransacked the premises and thrashed its staff over the death of a student, Nayan Santani, who was stabbed by a Class 8 junior during a minor scuffle on Tuesday. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) on Friday staged massive protests, demanding that the school be shut down. Several members were detained as they tried to storm the school premises and subsequently clashed with police personnel deployed at the spot. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad also staged protests. Around 200 schools in Maninagar, Khokhara and Isanpur areas remained shut as part of a bandh call given by the outfit. The students and parents demanded strict action against the accused. "What are you teaching the students after taking lakhs of rupees? The school never takes any responsibility. Had the school management taken the right steps, the murder would not have happened," one of the parents said, seeking anonymity. There was no immediate reaction from the school. The student was stabbed with a knife outside the school building after school hours; CCTV footage of the attack showed the victim. The accused was spotted by a security guard after he tried to flee from behind the building. The victim's family alleged the school did not call the ambulance on time and that a water tanker was summoned to wash away the blood's stains in an alleged bid to destroy evidence. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered and the accused student has been detained for questioning. The school administration has filed a police complaint in connection with the vandalism at its premises. Over 500 people have been booked on charges of rioting, assault and causing damages in the case, sources said. Meanwhile, the accused confessed to the crime in his chats with a friend over Instagram. The chats, which have gone viral, showed the accused's friend telling him that he should not have killed his senior. The friend also tells him to go "underground" for a few days in order to avoid getting caught.
