Sarawak Metro wins UITP Award for sustainable transport
In a statement today, Sarawak Metro said the award was in acknowledgement of its efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the implementation of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS).
The UITP Global Awards, which drew over 300 entries across nine categories from participants representing 50 countries, recognise excellence in sustainable urban mobility.
Sarawak Metro chief executive officer Mazli Mustaffa said being shortlisted as a finalist was already a significant achievement.
'Although I was optimistic about our entry, I felt deeply honoured to learn that Sarawak Metro had been shortlisted as a finalist for this year's UITP Global Awards.
'And now, receiving the UITP Special Recognition Award for the work we are doing is truly a great honour. All of us at Sarawak Metro are humbled by this recognition from such a prestigious organisation,' he said.
He added that the international recognition would further motivate the team to realise its vision of delivering a modern and sustainable public transport system for Kuching, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2026.
Sarawak Metro is a member of UITP, which was founded in 1885 and is the only global network that brings together all public transport stakeholders and sustainable mobility modes.
The UITP Summit is the premier global event for the public transport sector, attracting over 10,000 professionals including operators, authorities, industry suppliers, and policymakers from around the world.

KUCHING (Aug 15): Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd has awarded a RM9.74 million contract to a joint venture between CRRC MRT Holdings Group Co Ltd and Urban Empire Builders Sdn Bhd for the supply of a mobile hydrogen refuelling station under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project. In a statement, the company said the contract covers the design, supply, delivery, installation, testing, and commissioning of the facility, which will support refuelling for both Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles and feeder buses. A total of seven submissions were received for the tender, which closed on Nov 1, 2024. The letter of acceptance was signed today at Sarawak Metro's corporate office by chief executive officer Ts Mazli Mustaffa, with CRRC MRT Holdings Group general manager Zhao JunKui and Urban Empire Builders director Ts Mike Chin Yuan Tai representing the joint venture. Mazli, in his remarks at the signing ceremony, stressed the importance of timely delivery to support the scheduled launch of KUTS operations in the fourth quarter of 2026. 'Together with the hydrogen production plant and refuelling station at our depot in Rembus, Kota Samarahan, we expect our contractor to deliver the mobile hydrogen refuelling station on schedule to enhance the flexibility for both our ART vehicles and feeder buses,' he said.

Petrol station operators seek meeting with Sarawak Metro over KUTS project disruptions
Petrol station dealers along the KUTS project route in Kuching and Samarahan are experiencing constant disruptions due to ongoing works being carried out directly in front of station entry and exit points. KUCHING (Aug 12): The Sarawak Petroleum Product Agents' Association is seeking a meeting with Sarawak Metro to address safety concerns and business disruptions affecting petrol stations along the Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS) project route in Kuching and Samarahan. The association's chairman, Laura Hartini Maurice said works carried out directly in front of station entry and exit points have caused constant disruption, with some stations forced to close for several hours. 'While we support the development of the project, the lack of advance notice to station management has prevented us from taking essential safety measures such as traffic control, alternative access arrangements, and rescheduling fuel deliveries,' she said in a statement today. According to her, without these precautions, customers face unnecessary inconvenience accessing stations, leading to service interruptions and significant business losses. The association hopes the proposed meeting will result in a coordination plan that prioritises safety, reduces public inconvenience, and ensures minimal disruption to station operations. The discussion would also cover identifying suitable times for works to be carried out to avoid peak-hour congestion. 'Petrol station dealers remain committed to ensuring the safety of the public, our staff, and all road users, and we urge for better communication and cooperation moving forward,' she added.

Sarawak, Denmark explore green transport, energy collaboration

Discussions focused on potential cooperation in R&D, particularly in hydrogen production, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and other low-carbon innovations aligned with Sarawak's green agenda. 'The ministry looks forward to forging closer ties with Denmark in technology exchange, expertise sharing, and joint projects that align with Sarawak's sustainable transport and green energy agenda,' Lee said in a statement. During the meeting, Lee briefed the Danish delegation on the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), which will feature Malaysia's first hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), and plans for a new Kuching International Airport envisioned as a modern regional gateway. Berner expressed Denmark's support for Sarawak's ambitions in advancing future-ready, environmentally friendly transport systems.
