Govt mulling specific laws to tackle AI legal challenges, says Azalina
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said ( pic ) said the current legal system needs to be upgraded, as AI-related laws require different approaches, including burden of proof, authenticity and document integrity.
"Right now, whatever you say, every document is online, and because it's online you can fabricate any content," she told a press conference after launching the Malaysia National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR) 2025-2030 at the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) here on Tuesday (Aug 12).
She said courts must be confident in accepting AI-based evidence, as the technology can produce visuals or audio resembling individuals, but do not exist in reality, adding that the matter requires serious consideration to protect the public from fraud or manipulation.
Commenting on the progress of the Political Funding Bill, she said it is still in process and subject to the agreement of political parties.
"We have three Parliament sessions in a year… it (bill) is still in process," she said.
On the issue of employers retaining workers' passports, Azalina stressed that such action is prohibited under Malaysian law.
"You have to be fair to your workers and return the passport," she said, emphasising that Malaysia respects the human rights of all workers, including foreign workers from ASEAN countries, and must not act aggressively or unlawfully against them.
Earlier in her keynote address, Azalina said the launch of the NAPBHR 2025-2030 marked Malaysia's first national framework to integrate human rights into business and corporate governance.
She said the plan reflected Malaysia's commitment to the United Nations Guiding Principles as the country assumes the Asean Chairmanship.
"The success of this plan demands more than government effort; it requires shared ownership," she said.
The NAPBHR focuses on labour, environment and governance, and was developed through consultations since 2019 with ministries, agencies, civil society, business leaders, Indigenous communities, unions and academics. - Bernama

BIMB Securities: Malaysia's 2Q GDP likely below 4.5% estimate
MALAYSIA'S economic growth in the second quarter of 2025 (2Q25) is expected to come in slightly below the Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) advance estimate of 4.5%, at around 4.3%, according to BIMB Securities Research. In its gross domestic product (GDP) preview, BIMB said the moderation reflects softer private consumption and slower export growth amid persistent global headwinds. Retail sales growth eased to 5% year-on-year – the weakest in six quarters – while export growth slowed to 3.5% from 4.4% in the previous quarter. Exports to China contracted by 4.4%, while growth to the US decelerated to 20.2% from 36.4% in 1Q. BIMB said investment momentum remained solid but is likely to moderate given global uncertainties, including potential US tariffs of up to 100% on semiconductor imports and varying levies on other major economies. Despite external risks, domestic demand is expected to provide some buffer, supported by government measures such as a one-off RM100 cash transfer to all Malaysian adults at end-August and the 25-basis-point cut in the overnight policy rate in July. 'While external uncertainties may weigh on the export-oriented sectors, domestic policy measures are expected to help sustain Malaysia's near-term growth momentum,' the research house said. — TMR

NILAI, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar is confident that the Halaqah Mubaligh ASEAN 2.0 programme will serve as an effective platform for sharing views to expand Islamic preaching at the regional and international levels. Mohd Na'im also expressed confidence that the programme, which began today and runs until Thursday, could be used as a platform to formulate more effective preaching strategies in facing contemporary challenges. 'I hope it will strengthen ties among ASEAN preachers, discuss preacher capacity-building systems, and expand the reach of preaching in this region,' he said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the programme here tonight, which was also attended by Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee.
