Tragic Gerik crash site among key highway sections slated for RM55m major road upgrades this year, says works minister
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that since 2023, various initiatives have been undertaken to enhance the Gerik-Jeli route, particularly along the FT04 federal road.
He noted that in June 2023, an allocation of RM30 million was approved for the reconstruction of sections of the JRTB. Two months later, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM30 million to further upgrade the route.
'This allocation has been utilised to upgrade and maintain several critical sections of FT04,' he said, in a Facebook post.
He added that ongoing works include road resurfacing, and the repair of facilities, bridges, street lights, and traffic lights along both directions of the route.
Nanta said that all upgrading works on FT04 were completed in phases between July and August 2023, with a total cost of RM55.73 million, based on road damage assessments conducted through the pavement condition assessment (PCA).
He added that, in 2024, RM7.2 million had been allocated for various repair works at several other sections of the route.
Nanta said that, while the police investigation into the tragic accident early Monday morning is still ongoing, he has received various reactions regarding the road conditions, which have gone viral on social media.
'As I have emphasised before, the ministry remains fully committed to ensuring that road infrastructure is safe and comfortable for all users.
'At the same time, I must stress that road safety is a shared responsibility, including that of road users themselves,' he said.
Monday's tragic incident involved a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The bus overturned following a collision at KM53 of JRTB, near Tasik Banding, Gerik, claiming the lives of 15 students.
The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. — Bernama

Anwar: No nation is safe when racial hatred thrives
CYBERJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to reject attempts to incite racial hatred and not be swayed by those exploiting sensitive issues to divide national unity. Speaking at a town hall during the launch of Multimedia University's (MMU) Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE), he reminded the audience that Malaysians must rise above destructive tendencies. "Remember, we are anak Malaysia who should love our country. "We must put an end to this destructive culture of corruption and racism, of inciting racial hatred, constant quarrelling, provoking and insulting religion or race. "This is not education. Education should lead us towards good and transformation," he said. He added that the country must be safeguarded against such elements, including bullying and abuse. Anwar said that Malaysia is a nation of laws with a firm legal system, and that violations would be dealt with regardless of a person's status or background. "This is a nation of laws with rules that must be respected. The National Unity Ministry exists because, to me, political stability is essential. "This country must also learn from others. Nowhere in the world has racial or religious hatred ever brought safety or stability," he said at the Temu Anwar programme. He was responding to a student's question on government efforts to strengthen unity and combat racism. "No country can remain safe if voices of racial or religious hatred are allowed to flourish. We must be firm in ensuring no one fans such divisions," he said. The prime minister also praised the maturity of today's youth in prioritising unity. "My outlook is very hopeful when I see young people today being positive and mature in their views on unity. But we must also recognise there are still groups trying to incite and distort facts," he added. Citing the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Anwar again stressed that the government has never concealed facts or protected anyone. "If it involves murder or bullying, I don't care whose child it is — if a crime has been committed, we will investigate and prosecute," he said. Also present at the launch were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. MMU's new FAIE will feature state-of-the-art laboratories to foster creativity and collaboration between students, researchers and industry partners, ensuring graduates remain competitive in the digital economy. The faculty will introduce a new Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Applied AI) programme, a three-year full-time course beginning in July 2025. Existing engineering programmes will also be enhanced with AI components to equip students with advanced technological skills. Applied AI covers technologies such as machine learning and automation to address real-world challenges, including smart healthcare, autonomous vehicles, intelligent farming and personalised digital assistants.

Widows of Elmina crash victims sue aircraft operator for negligence
In August 2023, a business jet with eight people on board crashed off the Guthrie Corridor Expressway in Bandar Elmina, Selangor, killing 10 including former Pelangai assemblyman Johari Harun and two road users. PETALING JAYA : The wife of former Pelangai assemblyman Johari Harun, who died along with two others in a plane crash near Elmina, Selangor, in August 2023, has filed a negligence suit against the operator of the light aircraft. In a statement of claim filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court last Friday, the plaintiffs named Jet Valet Sdn Bhd and its parent entity, Koperasi Amanah Pelaburan Bhd, as defendants. The plaintiffs are Johari's wife, Maziah Sudin, as well as Tengku Erina Ungku Abdul Malek and Nizatul Akmar Nasir, the spouses of the two other victims, Naim Muaidi and Khairil Azwan Jamaluddin. They are seeking special, general, aggravated and/or exemplary damages, in addition to costs related to their husbands' funerals and bereavement. The business jet with eight people on board crashed off the Guthrie Corridor Expressway in Bandar Elmina on Aug 17, 2023, killing 10 including Johari and two road users. The aircraft, a Beechcraft Premier 1, was flying from Langkawi to Subang airport. It had been cleared to land at 2.48pm, but crashed two minutes later. The plaintiffs claimed that the defendants breached their duty of care and statutory obligations, including by failing to take adequate steps to ensure that the passengers arrived safely at Subang airport. They alleged that the defendants failed to register the plane with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia and did not obtain the required approval for non-scheduled air services or for carrying passengers, as mandated by law. The defendants are also accused of exploiting regulatory grey areas to avoid stringent oversight and necessary approvals. The plaintiffs further alleged that the defendants allowed the pilot to occupy the right seat of the plane, contrary to flight manual requirements, and permitted an unqualified second-in-command to occupy the left seat and perform critical pre-landing checklist duties. The plaintiffs claimed the defendants breached contract by failing to ensure the aircraft's airworthiness and passenger safety, and violated Article 5(1) of the Federal Constitution guaranteeing the right to life. The widows additionally claimed losses related to funeral arrangements for their spouses, including RM5,000 in burial expenses and RM30,000 in bereavement costs for each of the three deceased, as well as loss of dependency to be determined by the court. The statement of claim was filed by Messrs. Tanes, Khoo & Paulraj. In August last year, the Air Accident Investigation Bureau in its final report on the crash found that the primary cause of the plane crash was the inadvertent extension of the lift dump spoilers. It said the action caused a sudden loss of lift, resulting in catastrophic loss of control and the subsequent crash, adding that it believed the co-pilot had committed the fatal error.

Court throws out Halim Saad's attempt to reinstate Renong takeover suit

PUTRAJAYA : Tycoon Halim Saad has failed to reinstate his lawsuit against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and two others over the government's takeover of his holdings in the Renong-UEM Group. The Court of Appeal dismissed Halim's appeal today on grounds that this lawsuit, filed in 2023, was time-barred. Justice Supang Lian, who led a three-member bench, said Halim's lawsuit was a plain and obvious case for striking out. Justices Lim Chong Fong and Alwi Wahab also heard the appeal. The court ordered Halim to pay RM20,000 in costs to the defendants, who included former second finance minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop and the government. In the suit, Halim claimed that Mahathir and Mohamed 'forced' him to relinquish his stake in Renong-UEM, together with all rights vested in him, without adequate compensation more than 23 years ago. Mahathir was prime minister from July 1981 to October 2003, and again from May 2018 to February 2020. Halim alleged that Mahathir and Mohamed were 'the prime movers in respect of the said compulsory acquisition and deprivation'. The stake was said to comprise 372 million shares, and represented 16% of Renong Bhd's entire share capital. Halim claimed that the shares, acquired by government investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd through its subsidiary in 2001, belonged to him personally and not to Umno, a fact acknowledged by Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on Nov 24, 1997. Anwar was Mahathir's deputy and also the finance minister and Umno deputy president at the time. Halim claimed that UEM then held a 32.6% stake in Renong, while Renong held a 37.92% share in UEM. The suit sought an unspecified amount in compensation or, alternatively, general, aggravated and exemplary damages to be assessed by the court, together with interest and costs. The High Court struck out the lawsuit in May last year. Lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar appeared for Halim while senior federal counsel Ahmad Hanir Hambaly and Imtiyaz Wizni Aufa Othman appeared for Mahathir, Mohamed and the government.
