Cheap flights up for grabs amid ‘Trump slump' in tourists to US

Times14-05-2025

Tourists are turning their backs on the US as President Trump's divisive rhetoric leaves them seeking alternative destinations.
Industry leaders said there were growing signs of 'Trump Slump 2.0', with airlines and destinations cutting their forecasts for 2025.
This week New York City reduced its forecast by three million visitors, citing growing negative sentiment toward the US. It expects two million fewer international visitors and one million fewer domestic arrivals.
Only two months ago, the city's tourism board predicted that 2025 would break records, with visitors surpassing pre-pandemic levels. It now looks like a distant wish.
The effects are also being felt in Las Vegas, where arrivals have dropped by 7.8 per cent, according to the city's Convention and Visitors Authority. It welcomed 3.39 million

Los Angeles Olympics bosses speak out on Trump's latest travel ban impact

Los Angeles 2028 Olympics organisers have expressed confidence that Donald Trump 's latest travel ban will not prevent participants from entering the US. Planning and preparation for the event have made "significant progress" as LA28 chairman and president Casey Wasserman thanked the federal government for recognising that the Olympics require special consideration. During a news conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Wasserman said: "It was very clear in the directive that the Olympics require special consideration and I actually want to thank the federal government for recognising that. 'It's very clear that the federal government understands that that's an environment that they will be accommodating and provide for. 'We have great confidence that that will only continue. It has been the case to date and it will certainly be the case going forward through the games." International Olympic Committee member Nicole Hoevertsz anticipates the US government will cooperate, as it did in hosting previous Olympics. "That is something that we will be definitely looking at and making sure that it is guaranteed as well," she said. "We are very confident that this is going to be accomplished. I'm sure this is going to be executed well." Sixteen IOC members recently concluded a three-day visit, inspecting multiple venue locations, including Dodger Stadium. The IOC's Coordination Commission was last in the city in November. 'We've seen significant progress,' Hoevertsz said. 'We leave the city very confident with the road ahead.' Noting the games are 1,135 days from opening on July 14, 2028, Wasserman said, "We are in delivery mode now.' Saturday marks the six-month anniversary of the start of the deadly wildfires that devastated Pacific Palisades on the city's west side and the community of Altadena, northeast of downtown. 'In California, there are some obvious things you should be prepared for — earthquakes, wildfires,' Wasserman said. 'You certainly hope that they never happen, but shame on us if we're not prepared for any and every kind of eventuality because that is our job.' Reynold Hoover, who runs the day-to-day work of LA28 as its CEO, said contingency planning is ongoing. 'The wildfires gave us an opportunity within the organisation to think a little bit differently about how we're structured and how we impact the community and how we think about sustainability,' he said. From a financial standpoint, Wasserman said he's 'incredibly confident' the games will turn a profit. 'Frankly, losing money is not really an option for us. We understand that while there is a backstop from the city, that is not something we ever intend to get close to,' he said. 'We have built our entire delivery to be tracked against the revenue we create, which is why we are being so aggressive, and have been for a long time, on generating as much revenue as possible.' Wasserman said LA28 is 'well over" 60 per cent in contracted revenue. 'We have more revenue today contracted than Paris did total revenue," he said, 'and we haven't sold a ticket yet."

Chrysler Comeback Promises Sleek, Modern Machines

Ralph Gilles confidently confirms that the Chrysler brand is back on, with new models in the pipeline. The American Brand Is Currently A Minivan Maker It's been over a year since the production of the Chrysler 300 halted at the end of 2023. Since then, the American marque has become a minivan maker, which is anti-climactic for a storied brand with 100 years of history behind it. In fact, in its centenary celebration, Chrysler rolled out a commemorative package for the Pacifica minivan in the form of stickers. 0:08 / 0:09 Walmart is selling a 'heavy duty' $89 step ladder for $48, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy and secure' Walmart is selling a 'heavy duty' $89 step ladder for $48, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy and secure' Watch More Needless to say, Chrysler has been stagnant for quite some time, but its CEO isn't worried about that, with a plan already in place. More importantly, Stellantis' design boss, Ralph Gilles (known for his work on the Dodge Viper and the Chrysler 300), is pretty optimistic about the brand's revival, which involves a low-slung model. Gilles: Chrysler Is 'Back On' Speaking to Road & Track, Gilles shared that things are looking up and that they 'are back on with Chrysler.' While that was vague, he said that a dedicated design studio has already been in place since late 2023, contrasting with its previous setup, where it shared a studio with Dodge. The company now also has separate product planning and marketing teams, showing the brand's commitment to being back on its feet. The center of Chrysler's revival is, of course, the Halcyon Concept – the four-door futuristic EV design study that debuted last year, equipped with one of the coolest doors we've seen in a car. It won't become a single production vehicle, though; it is the basis or inspiration Chrysler's future models, including a possible 300 revival. 'The Halcyon was a cauldron of concepts, cauldron of ideas — many, many, many ideas on that car. I could list 50 different things that are all ideas that will go forward into different vehicles,' Gilles told R&T. Source: Chrysler Lower Vehicles For Better Efficiency There isn't any concrete launch for Chrysler in the pipeline. However, CEO Christine Fuell confirmed that a crossover will be the first to arrive, and unsurprisingly so. In as much as sleek machines are more pleasing to the eyes of enthusiasts, SUVs are just popular among those who will spend cash on cars. Gilles stopped short of providing concrete details about Chrysler's upcoming offering, except for some new features such as a glass roof system, active aerodynamics, augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD), hidden tech stack with a 'tech detox' or 'go-away' feature, new Stow 'N Go stacking system, and a revamped Chrysler badge. But perhaps more importantly, Gilles confirmed that the automaker isn't sticking with the SUV strategy, saying lower vehicles are being considered due to their efficiency. Given that efficiency is quite important for EVs, it's almost guaranteed that a low-slung model is coming for Chrysler in the future. 'For battery-electric cars, they do a good job for vehicle demand energy, so that's all I can say. We have a lot of different form factors we can look at,' Gilles told the publication. The Advantage Of Flexible STLA Platforms Gilles didn't provide insights regarding the propulsion of future Chrysler products, but we have a good idea about that. Stellantis, Chrysler's parent company, already rolled out new STLA platforms a few years ago, which are already being used by cars on the road, such as the Dodge Charger Daytona EV. The great thing about the STLA platforms is their flexibility, since they can be fully electric, gas-powered, or hybrid. We expect Chrysler to utilize this, as do the rest of the vehicles under Stellantis. About the Author Jacob Oliva View Profile
