Coronation Street's Gary Windass left fighting for his life as soap FINALLY reveals what happened to 'missing' villager - and Maria is left 'spiralling'
Coronation Street 's Gary Windass is left fighting for his life as the soap finally reveals what happened to the 'missing' villager - leaving Maria 'spiralling'.
The mystery began on the ITV soap when the builder (Mikey North) left Weatherfield, supposedly to stay with his mother for a while.
It was to escape neighbour Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty) blackmailing him, after she leant in and kissed him recently, leaving him stunned.
She promised she would keep quiet about the kiss - including to Gary's partner Maria (Samia Longchambon) - as long as 'he did what she said', with her exact motive unclear.
Gary and Maria are in a rough spot in their relationship at the moment so when he left town for a mysterious reason, she was upset but quickly brushed it off.
But when he did not return for her son Liam's (Charlie Wrenshall) birthday, alarm bells started ringing in her head as she wondered where he had gone.
And Friday's episode will reveal he has not left town at all - but is actually in a coma at Weatherfield General, fighting for his life, with his family and friends totally unaware.
The revelation comes after Maria gets so worried for Gary's safety, she reports him as a missing person to police detective Kit Green (Jacob Roberts).
It is then she discovers from him there is an unidentified coma patient at the local hospital.
Kit assures Maria it is not Gary - but it is a sign even he has been taken in by Gary's mystery attacker.
It turns out the reason why no one knows Gary is at the hospital is the unknown criminal has tried to cover their tracks by giving the wrong name for him and claiming to be his next of kin.
As Gary remains in critical condition, the upcoming episodes will unravel how he ended up in hospital - and exactly who put him there.
Samia, who plays Maria, said: 'Maria and Gary are going through a bit of a rough patch at the minute and initially, she's upset that he's left but doesn't think too much into it.
'As soon as Gary misses Liam's birthday, she has a gut feeling that something isn't right and fears something awful might have happened to him.
'Maria's mind is spiralling but she doesn't stop for a second to think who actually attacked Gary.
'She's aware he has a lot of enemies from over the years who could have potentially wanted to take revenge on him.'
For instance, Gary had a violent fight with Lou's villainous husband Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton) just weeks ago.
It came after he discovered Mick had terrified his stepson Liam by leaving him locked in a cabinet for hours during an attempted practical joke in the builder's yard.
Gary was furious, confronting Mick, who soon found himself fired.
But he is not one to go down without a fight and soon warned Gary he would regret giving him the push out of the yard.
He soon confronted Gary on the street, where the pair had a bloody brawl in broad daylight, which nearly ended with Mick being bottled before Kit stepped in.
It comes after Gary made a shock return to the cobbles earlier this year, after a long time off our screens.
The character had not been seen on the soap since January, which left fans baffled at the time - his absence was not explained and no plot point was created to justify it.
Maria had also been missing from recent episodes.
But they both came back at the end of April, with Gary telling Maria he wants to sell his shop and buy the builder's yard in Weatherfield to start afresh - which she is not convinced is a good plan.
Fans were shocked and delighted to see Gary's return, taking to X to express their astonishment.
One said, 'I'd forgotten what he looked like', while someone else commented, 'A rare Gary sighting!'
Another added: 'Gary's here too?! Did they finally find the key to the cupboard they've been keeping all these characters in?'
Someone else said: 'Oh wow, Gary Windass is still alive? I forgot about him.'
Last month, avid fans of the soap had questioned where he was on X, with three posing the exact same question, 'Where is Gary Windass?', with another adding: 'Really need his storyline.'
Someone else commented: 'Hmm Corrie mysteries... Gary and Maria have been AWOL for months. Is there a Bermuda Triangle corner in Weatherfield?'
Fans were worried the lack of explanation meant the couple were going to be quietly written out of the show - but their fears will have been alleviated by their surprise return.

Post Office: Police identify seven suspects related to Horizon scandal
Police investigating the Horizon Post Office scandal have now identified seven suspects, with more than 45 people classed as "persons of interest". A "scaled-up" national team of officers has been in place for over six months as part of Operation Olympos - dedicated to looking at crimes related to the Horizon Post Office scandal. The number of suspects has increased to seven since before Christmas, as part of a UK-wide investigation involving 100 officers. Four have now been interviewed under caution. Hundreds of subpostmasters were wrongfully convicted of stealing after faulty computer software created false accounting shortfalls in Post Office branches between 1999 and 2015. Commander Stephen Clayman, Gold Command for Operation Olympos, described a "huge shift" in terms of their investigation and "significant progress". "We've got over four million documents that are going to rise to about six million documents," he said, "but we're beginning to methodically work through those and looking at individuals who are associated with certain prosecutions." He described a "pool of about 45 people plus" classed as "persons of interest", with that number "expected to grow". He added that officers have questioned "some" in the past and "more recently" and are looking at the offences of perverting the course of justice and perjury. The "wider pool" of persons of interest is made up of Post Office investigators, lawyers, and "management" across Fujitsu and the Post Office. 11:28 The team of officers will be identifying actions which could amount to criminal offences on both an individual and corporate basis. Any decisions made on whether to charge will not happen until after the Post Office inquiry findings are "published and reviewed". The Operation Olympos officers are part of four teams - a London hub and three regional teams - who have been described as "highly motivated" across England and Wales. Police Scotland and the Police Service of Northern Ireland are also helping. Cmdr Clayman said that officers "will be building a robust case" to pass on to the Crown Prosecution Service. He also added that, compared to the inquiry, his officers will have to "prove this to the criminal standard…a much, much higher standard". He described feeling "optimistic" and "confident" that the teams will have "some successful outcomes", and said they are "working as hard and as quickly as (they) can". Teams are involved in what has been described as a "focused strategy which gets to the heart of the issues". Their investigations are being overseen by the National Police Chiefs' Council and the Metropolitan Police. Victims have also been told that the police will not be reinvestigating every case but "taking a speculative look at cases" to focus on key people involved and evidence for prosecution. Operation Olympos is also making use of special software to help process the amount of evidence to sift through material in relation to key events and identified cases. Of the four suspects interviewed under caution, two were questioned in late 2021, one in late 2024 and the most recent in early 2025.

Mel B set to ditch the leopard print for a conventional white wedding with her fiancé Rory McPhee as she prepares to tie the knot for the third time
There won't be a spot of leopard-print in sight when Scary Spice Mel B marries fiancé Rory McPhee next weekend in St Paul's Cathedral. This will be the third wedding for Mel, who is 50 and a mother of three, Phoenix, 26, Angel, 18, and Madison, 13. And it has now been revealed the bride is going all out for a perfectly traditional, perfectly English white wedding, with a thoroughly conventional dress – not designed by Victoria Beckham, even though Mel herself said that was happening last year. Sources told The Mail's Alison Boshoff that she will wear British designer Josephine Scott for the service on Saturday, July 5, in the crypt at the church where Prince Charles married Diana Spencer in 1981. It can be revealed that there will be a further celebration with friends and family – and another wedding ceremony – at a hotel in Morocco later in July. Mel will wear a flashier gown, from US wedding designer Justin Alexander, for that one. The star told Women's Wear Daily in May: 'This will be a very formal, English wedding where I want to feel regal and very proper. All the ladies will wear hats or fascinators. 'Then, I'm having a second ceremony abroad, which will be more informal, sexy and beautiful.' At her first wedding, to Dutch backing dancer Jimmy Gulzar in 1998, Mel wore a Vegas showgirl style feathered headdress with a white and gold dress. Her second wedding, to Stephen Belafonte, in 2007, was a Las Vegas elopement, followed by a vow renewal in Egypt the following year. This time round, a friend revealed: 'It's a very traditional dress and the service will be totally traditional. She will come down the aisle to organ music.' There will be a small reception in London afterwards. As to whether the Spice Girls will attend, it's anybody's guess. As ever, there are tensions between the former bandmates. Mel C and Emma Bunton came to her 50th birthday party in Leeds earlier this month with their partners and they should be there. As for Geri Halliwell-Horner and Victoria Beckham, we shall have to wait and see. After Mel and Stephen Belafonte separated in 2016 she accused him of emotional and physical abuse, which he has always denied. His lawyers said that during the marriage they spent her £50million fortune. Mel grew close to McPhee after the breakdown of her marriage to Belafonte. Last year she said: 'He's a family friend, great hair- dresser... when I went back to England, he would come over and give me hair treatments... 'And as he was nurturing my curls back, I guess he was nurturing my trust and belief in a relationship.'
