Lomboto's late winner secures precious win for Sligo Rovers over Galway
STRUGGLING Sligo Rovers secured a precious win - only their fifth of the season - when they beat provincial rivals Galway United 2-1 at The Showgrounds.
Substitute Francely Lomboto's brilliant backheel goal after 73 minutes proved the difference in a thrill-a-minute fixture that saw second-half red cards for Sligo defender John Mahon and Galway goalscorer Moses Dyer.
Sligo's other scorer was Jad Hakiki as the Bit O'Red extended their advantage over bottom of the table Cork City to four points.
For what was the third Connacht cruncher of the season, with one win apiece, both sides had contrasting fortunes in recent games.
Sligo, who have been either bottom of the table or second from bottom for weeks, lost 1-0 away to Drogheda United the previous Friday - on the same night Galway recorded an impressive 3-1 home defeat of St Patrick's Athletic.
Galway, seventh in the standings coming into this fixture, had the game's first significant opportunity when Patrick Hickey's close-range shot was brilliantly kept out by Sam Sargeant, who then tipped over Cian Byrne's fiercely-struck free-kick.
Sligo finally made inroads in the 19th minute when Will Fitzgerald's persistence led to blocked shots from Wilson Waweru and Jad Hakiki.
Winger Fitzgerald, who was becoming increasingly influential, unleashed a shot that was straight at Galway netminder Evan Watts.
In the 43rd minute a chaotic sequence in the Sligo goalmouth saw Galway go desperately close to taking the lead - Sam Sargeant made three saves and there were also two goal-line clearances.
Just over a minute later Sligo hit the front when the lively Jad Hakiki netted with an assured finish from Owen Elding's pass.
Hakiki had another chance when he surged through the centre but this time his low effort was gathered by Evan Watts.
Gritty Galway were level just two minutes into the second-half when top scorer Moses Dyer netted his 10th goal of the campaign with a header from Cian Byrne's free-kick delivery.
Things suddenly boiled over in the 53rd minute when Sligo defender John Mahon and Galway goalscorer Moses Dyer were each red-carded following an altercation between the two.
Sligo threatened again through a Jad Hakiki shot and then a header from substitute Francely Lomboto - following a corner - as Evan Watts' save kept Galway in the game.
Lomboto's goalbound shot came off the upright and he was in the right place to score with a deft backheel to restore Sligo's lead in the 73rd minute.
Wil Fitzgerald cracked a shot on target as Sligo, who were now in control, sought to extend their lead in the closing stages.
Galway, however, almost equalised in the 86th minute but Patrick Hickey's header was cleared off the goal-line by Sligo substitute Ollie Denham.
Unlucky Galway twice hit the woodwork in stoppage-time as relieved Sligo just about held on.

Who will be on RTE commentary duty for Sunday's Cork-Tipp All-Ireland final?
Marty Morrissey will be RTE's live match commentator for Sunday's All-Ireland hurling final between Cork and Tipperary. It will be the ninth year in succession that the Clare man has been handed the honour for the hurling final, having first taken the mic for live television commentary on hurling's biggest day for the 2017 decider, when Galway beat Waterford. The gig had essentially been the preserve of Ger Canning up until then, with the popular Corkman having taken over from Micheál O'Hehir for the 1985 hurling final between Offaly and Galway after the legendary commentator fell ill ahead of what would have been his 100th All-Ireland final. But RTE have rotated the commentary duties more in the last decade or so, with Canning often on radio duty on final day instead. It will be Morrissey's 10th All-Ireland senior final to call on live television in all as, along with the previous eight hurling finals, he commentated on the drawn football final between Galway and Kerry in 2000 as Canning was on duty at the Sydney Olympics before returning for the replay as Kerry claimed victory. Marty Morrissey (Image: ©INPHO/James Crombie) Morrissey will be joined by former Offaly hurler Michael Duignan on co-commentary duty on Sunday. Brendan Cummins has emerged as the outstanding co-commentator on RTE's hurling coverage in recent years and is highly rated in Montrose, with many feeling that his time had come. However, the former Tipperary star tends not to commentate on games involving his native county, and so Tipp's involvement on Sunday effectively ruled him out. Having a co-commentator from one of the participating counties is certainly not without precedent, with former Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice on duty for the Kingdom's All-Ireland football semi-final win over Tyrone just last Saturday, for example, but Cummins has had extensive involvement with a large number of the current Tipp team given his role as the county's under-20 manager in recent years. Roma and Republic of Ireland Under-21 midfielder Kevin Zefi makes surprise Sligo Rovers appearance amid uncertain future
Republic of Ireland Under-21 prospect Kevin Zefi may be on the cusp of returning to Ireland from Serie A side Roma after lining out for Sligo Rovers in a friendly last night. Zefi, who left Shamrock Rovers in 2021 for Inter Milan, earned the move to Italy after becoming the youngest ever scorer in the League of Ireland at the age of 15 years for the Hoops' B team in the First Division. Zefi left Inter to move to Roma last year but has been unable to break into the first-team, only featuring for their U20 side. While he played for Ireland U21s last year in a match with Sweden, he was then called-up by Albania at the same level, being eligible due to both his parents being from the Balkans country. His future at international level remains unclear after withdrawing from the Albania squad for the games last March. Zefi is still under contract with the Serie A side and had been linked with a move to a lower league side in England or Scotland. However, Sligo may be in the mix for his services with a loan move possible, given Zefi has a year remaining on his contract with the Rome side. The 20-year-old played 60 minutes of Sligo's friendly with Mansfield Town last night as a trialist, scoring the only goal for the Bit O' Red in a 3-1 defeat to the League 1 side. He featured on the wing in what was a second choice Sligo selection and went on to play behind striker Cian Kavanagh as a number 10 in an impressive display.

Roma and Ireland star Kevin Zefi pictured playing for Sligo Rovers in pre-season friendly
Ireland U-21 attacker Kevin Zefi lined out for Sligo Rovers in a pre-season friendly last night, while he still remains under contract with Serie A giants Roma. The 20-year-old left Inter Milan to sign a three-year deal with Roma early last year, but togged out and scored for the Bit O'Red in Tuesday's 3-1 defeat to League One Mansfield Town. Zefi was listed as one of two trialists for John Russell's side, and opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a good strike from 25 yards out.
