Roma and Republic of Ireland Under-21 midfielder Kevin Zefi makes surprise Sligo Rovers appearance amid uncertain future
Zefi, who left Shamrock Rovers in 2021 for Inter Milan, earned the move to Italy after becoming the youngest ever scorer in the League of Ireland at the age of 15 years for the Hoops' B team in the First Division.
Zefi left Inter to move to Roma last year but has been unable to break into the first-team, only featuring for their U20 side.
While he played for Ireland U21s last year in a match with Sweden, he was then called-up by Albania at the same level, being eligible due to both his parents being from the Balkans country.
His future at international level remains unclear after withdrawing from the Albania squad for the games last March.
Zefi is still under contract with the Serie A side and had been linked with a move to a lower league side in England or Scotland.
However, Sligo may be in the mix for his services with a loan move possible, given Zefi has a year remaining on his contract with the Rome side.
The 20-year-old played 60 minutes of Sligo's friendly with Mansfield Town last night as a trialist, scoring the only goal for the Bit O' Red in a 3-1 defeat to the League 1 side.
He featured on the wing in what was a second choice Sligo selection and went on to play behind striker Cian Kavanagh as a number 10 in an impressive display.

From the low of the current FAI Cup holders being thrown out of Europe, the next team will elevate directly into the Europa League. It was the Europa which provided Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk with access to the group stages in 2011 and 2016 but Uefa adding the Conference League in 2021 blocked off that path. League winners enter the Champions League and for five years the other three teams qualified for the third competition. That has bolstered the chances of group stage participation but Europa carries higher rewards, €700,000 guaranteed, together with the fallback of a Conference League second round tie should they suffer elimination. A total of 32 teams are involved in the Cup second round, beginning with 10 ties on Friday night. Time has altered the landscape slightly, Dundalk remaining top despite losing at Bray Wanderers last week while Sligo have generated form, winning two and drawing the other two of their last four to open up an eight-point gap on the new basement team, Cork City. Dundalk boss Ciarán Kilduff may have available his latest capture Rohan Vaughan, a striker signed on loan from QPR for the rest of the season. 'The lads are motivated and excited for the opportunity to test ourselves against a top-tier side,' said Kilduff, whose club have won the FAI Cup 12 times. 'We know it's going to be a big challenge but it's also a big occasion at Oriel and we want to rise to that. Everyone's focused and ready to put on a good performance for the supporters.' Another venue for a potential upset is Markets Field where Treaty United welcome Derry City. The Limerick side pushed Derry all the way two years ago, narrowly losing 2-1 in the semi-finals. They currently sit fourth in the second tier, well positioned to secure a playoff spot, and succeeded in slaying form side Cobh Ramblers last Friday. Derry, meanwhile, lost the recent momentum that conferred title contender status when they lost at Sligo Rovers. 'We're expecting something of a backlash from Derry,' said Tommy Barrett, manager of the Limerick side since they entered the league in 2021. 'Our record against Premier teams in the past has been good and Derry only beat us 2-1 at their place. I think they've improved since then, with a team containing many full internationals. 'Of course, I'd prefer to have drawn a non-league team in our opening round rather than one of the strongest in the country but we've to ensure we are at it. 'Derry are full-time and we're not but we'll be putting up a fight for sure.'

Bryan Mbeumo could be in line to receive his ideal squad number, 19, should he complete a move to Manchester United, with the shirt currently unoccupied at Old Trafford. Talks between United and Brentford remain ongoing, but negotiations have stretched over a month, with the Bees determined to secure maximum value for the Cameroon international, who they signed for just £5.8 million back in 2019. It comes after United had two bids rejected for Mbeumo, the last one being worth around £62.5m - the same amount they paid to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Bees have been adamant that United should pay them more than they did for Cunha because Mbeumo outscored the Brazilian last season and is also the younger player. But a deal is now likely to be agreed after United paid Brentford's asking price for the player - who has already thrashed out personal terms.
