Roma and Republic of Ireland Under-21 midfielder Kevin Zefi makes surprise Sligo Rovers appearance amid uncertain future

Republic of Ireland Under-21 prospect Kevin Zefi may be on the cusp of returning to Ireland from Serie A side Roma after lining out for Sligo Rovers in a friendly last night. Zefi, who left Shamrock Rovers in 2021 for Inter Milan, earned the move to Italy after becoming the youngest ever scorer in the League of Ireland at the age of 15 years for the Hoops' B team in the First Division. Zefi left Inter to move to Roma last year but has been unable to break into the first-team, only featuring for their U20 side. While he played for Ireland U21s last year in a match with Sweden, he was then called-up by Albania at the same level, being eligible due to both his parents being from the Balkans country. His future at international level remains unclear after withdrawing from the Albania squad for the games last March. Zefi is still under contract with the Serie A side and had been linked with a move to a lower league side in England or Scotland. However, Sligo may be in the mix for his services with a loan move possible, given Zefi has a year remaining on his contract with the Rome side. The 20-year-old played 60 minutes of Sligo's friendly with Mansfield Town last night as a trialist, scoring the only goal for the Bit O' Red in a 3-1 defeat to the League 1 side. He featured on the wing in what was a second choice Sligo selection and went on to play behind striker Cian Kavanagh as a number 10 in an impressive display.

Ireland U-21 attacker Kevin Zefi lined out for Sligo Rovers in a pre-season friendly last night, while he still remains under contract with Serie A giants Roma. The 20-year-old left Inter Milan to sign a three-year deal with Roma early last year, but togged out and scored for the Bit O'Red in Tuesday's 3-1 defeat to League One Mansfield Town. Zefi was listed as one of two trialists for John Russell's side, and opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a good strike from 25 yards out.

Ex-Shamrock Rvs and Inter Milan youngster scores in trial game for Sligo Rovers

Roma youngster Kevin Zefi played and scored in a friendly for Sligo Rovers on Tuesday night. The former Shamrock Rovers and Inter Milan prospect featured as one of two trialists in John Russell's side as they took on League One outfit Mansfield Town at The Showgrounds. Zefi scored the Bit O' Red's only goal in a 3-1 defeat. His appearance sparked hopes among the Rovers faithful that they might land a player considered one of Irish football's hottest properties on a short-term deal. Zefi remains under contract with Roma, but has been linked with a move away from the Serie A giants. He has admirers within the Scottish Premiership, the English Football League and across the continent. The Dubliner arrived at Shamrock Rovers from St Kevin's Boys and, in 2020, he became the youngest ever League of Ireland goalscorer when he netted for the Hoops' second team in the First Division. He moved to Inter Milan in the summer of 2021 and left for Roma in January 2024.
