Amid Don 3 delays, Farhan Akhtar explains why Shah Rukh Khan was the perfect Don: ‘SRK can be charming while being menacing'

Indian Express09-05-2025

Shah Rukh Khan stepped into the shoes of the legendary Amitabh Bachchan when he played the lead role in Farhan Akhtar's remake of the 1978 film Don. Released in 2006, Don starred SRK in the titular role and Farhan recently shared that SRK's 'personality was tailor-made for that part.' He spoke about traits of Shah Rukh's personality that perfectly fitted his own imagination of Don, and added that SRK was not scared of the comparisons that he might have to face.
At the Waves Summit, when Farhan was asked about casting Shah Rukh in Don, he said, 'Shah Rukh's personality was tailor made for that part. We became friends just after Dil Chahta Hai when we started spending some time together so from 2001 onwards, pretty much till 2005, when he said yes to doing Don, we had spent many evenings together. When I started writing it, I was convinced it had to be him. His sense of humour, self deprecating style… he can be very charming even while being menacing, all this was inherently in the character so I never even thought about going to anyone else.'
Farhan said that even for Shah Rukh, Don was a big deal as he too, was a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan. 'For him, Don is massive. He is a huge fan of the film Don. He is huge fan of Mr Bachchan so to step into those shoes, to step into that role was very exciting for him,' he said. When Farhan was asked about his alternate plan, in case Shah Rukh refused because of the potential comparisons with the original, he said, 'I don't think Shah Rukh is scared of things like that. I think he is very very confident in his ability.' He then shared that SRK had been expecting that Farhan would come to him with this role and shared, 'We had been spending so much time together. I had told him that I am writing this. He was very excited. Before I told him, he was prepared that I will go to him. I think he was ready.'

Farhan directed the sequel of Don, Don 2, also starring SRK in 2011. In 2023, he announced Don 3, with Ranveer Singh replacing Shah Rukh in the lead role. However, the film's shoot is yet to begin. The film has been postponed many times, and recently, there were rumours that the film might get pushed further. However, the production house denied these rumours in November 2024. Farhan hasn't directed a film since Don 2.
In this conversation at Waves Summit, Farhan did not say anything about Don 3.

Aamir Khan reveals Sitaare Zameen Par almost starred Farhan Akhtar, Sivakarthikeyan

Ever since the trailer of Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par released, fans have been praising the actor's performance as Gulshan, the ill-mannered basketball coach to neurodivergent children. However, not many know that the Bollywood star had initially backed out of the film, and the makers had already signed Farhan Akhtar for the part. The plan was also to make the film in Tamil, with Sivakarthikeyan roped in for that version. But as they say, destiny has its own way, and Aamir eventually returned to the a group interview held in Mumbai on June 5, Khan opened up about working with RS Prasanna and recalled how the director had always envisioned him to play the lead role. While the superstar was fond of the story, he felt that the character was far removed from who he is. He even went on to suggest other actors who could portray the "ill-mannered, politically incorrect, rude, and arrogant man, who feels he is always right."The actor admitted working on the film after the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha, which left him distraught. "I was heartbroken because I loved the film (Laal Singh Chadha). I still love it and think it's really a beautiful one. But the bulk of the audience didn't like it, so it was very heartbreaking for me. I called Prasanna and told him that I was depressed and wouldn't be able to work. I'm an emotional person, so it would have been tough for me to work on a film. I was crying and just didn't even want to leave the house. So I asked him to take someone else, and because he understood, he didn't want to force me. He asked me to stay on as producer and finalised Farhan Akhtar and Sivakarthikeyan."advertisementKhan further shared that the plan was to make two films, in Hindi and Tamil. The dates were locked, and Prasanna, Divya (the writer), and the superstar had multiple meetings, as he had certain inputs to share.'In that one week, within the first half an hour of the first day, as she was reading the script and discussing points, I suddenly felt, 'why am I not doing this film? It's such a good script, have I gone mad to let it go?' But I couldn't tell them anything. After a week, when we locked everything, I finally confessed my feelings, but told Prasanna that I wasn't expecting any action. He said, 'This is your film, you should do it',' he the actor mentioned that the change was already done, the filmmaker referenced a Rajinikanth action scene where he forces a bullet back into the gun, hinting that things can always work said that Prasanna then shared, 'You cannot deny me as a director because you were my first choice. For two years, I have been with you, so please don't do this'.'The 'Andaaz Apna Apna' actor added, 'I was in a dilemma because Farhan was also very excited and wanted to play it differently. While I tried to decline, they put so much emotional pressure on me that I finally spoke to them. I was honest with Farhan and Sivakarthikeyan, and they agreed. Farhan, of course, was disappointed. He told me, 'I really love the role, but you should do it because you were the first choice.' He was very sweet and supportive. Similarly, Sivakarthikeyan also told me, 'Why are you saying sorry? You do the film, it's your film.' They were both very sweet and supportive. So then, I finally came back to the film.'Sitaare Zameen Par will hit cinema halls on June Watch

This child sitting with his mother is now a famous name in Bollywood, can you recognise him? His name is...

Flipping through childhood photos is one of the most treasured memories one may have. Looking back, down memory lane and up nostalgia hill, reminiscing about the old days usually puts a smile on our faces. This is a photograph of a famous person. He used to have a close bond with his mother. Let's see who this person is. The Bollywood's King Here we are talking about none other than Shah Rukh Khan, who aspired to be an actor and, with his mother's belief in him, accomplished his dream and became the unstoppable King Khan. Fueled by his desire, he completed school, college, and the National School of Drama before ultimately stepping into the world to seize the reins and govern it. A Close Bond with Mother That Became a Pillar Shah Rukh Khan faced a tragic loss when he lost his father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, at just 14 years old. His mother, Lateef Fatima Khan, became his sole guardian and the center of his world, providing unwavering support as he grew up. In an interview with Stardust, SRK shared how his mother's unconditional support helped him move through life's challenges. 'My mother was always incredibly proud of me. In her eyes, I was the best, and I started to believe that. She made me feel that way. But after she passed away, I suddenly realized I wasn't the best after all. I was just a nobody. It was her biggest dream to see me on the big screen. She sacrificed so much for me, and no one else on this earth would have done as much… I was still quite young when my father died, and I didn't shed a tear then. But when my mother passed, that's when I really broke down. It was such a strange and emotional experience… I still can't fully process it… I might start crying just thinking about it…' When Shah Rukh Lost His Strongest Pillar In 1991, Shah Rukh featured on Simi Garewal's popular chat show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, where he spoke about his mother's demise and how it broke him completely. He said, 'My mother died shortly after the release of my debut serial, Circus. In the ICU, she sat up with a blank expression on her face. She was a gorgeous woman. I told Mummy that you would be fine, and you would be okay for me. I'm going to do films. My serial (Circus) is coming soon. That night, the doctor arrived and said, 'Woh tumhari mummy ko saans chadh rahi hai, humein nahin maloom abhi kya karna hai.' He asked that I have some injections. I traveled throughout Delhi… I could not get them… I had just four and the doctor wanted twenty.'

Aamir Khan teaming up with Lokesh Kanagaraj for a film: ‘It is a superhero film'

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is teaming up with acclaimed Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj for a superhero film. The actor, who is awaiting the release of Sitaare Zameen Par on June 20, confirmed the news in a media interaction. 'Lokesh and I are working on a film, it is a superhero film. It is a big-scale action film and it will start next year, second half,' Aamir told PTI in a group interview. Lokesh Kanagaraj is a prominent director in Tamil cinema, known for his action-packed and commercially successful films like Kamal Haasan-starrer Vikram, Leo and Master with Vijay, and Kaithi starring Karthi. Wishing you a very happy birthday #AamirKhan sir 🤗🤗❤️❤️ Very grateful for the lovely conversations we've had. Your insights and passion for storytelling have always left me inspired. Here's to creating more magic on screen in the coming years and excited to share this special… — Lokesh Kanagaraj (@Dir_Lokesh) March 14, 2025 Aamir Khan dismissed reports about a possible sequel to his 2014 comedy drama PK. Instead, the actor said he is reuniting with PK director Rajkumar Hirani for a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, the Father of Indian Cinema. 'PK 2 is a rumour. I'm doing Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, Raju and I are working on it,' he said. Aamir said his most ambitious project is Mahabharata but he would not reveal any details until he has the basic foundation ready. 'Mahabharata has been my dream for the last 25 years. It is not a film. When you are making Mahabharata, you are not making a film, you're surrendering. I'm trying, but I don't know if I'll be able to fulfil my dream. Till the time I don't make a basic foundation for it, I won't be able to answer (any questions on it). I don't have the right information right now. All I know is I'm going to start work on it,' the actor said. A post shared by Aamir Khan Productions (@aamirkhanproductions) Asked about the movies from his filmography that have the potential for a sequel, Aamir Khan named Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and 3 Idiots (2009). 'A sequel can be made to 3 Idiots with those three characters (played by him, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi), who can meet later (in life). Also, a sequel can be made to Dil Chahta Hai, and Sarfarosh. Like, in Dil Chahta Hai, we can explore the mid-life crisis of the three boys (played by him, Akshaye Khanna, and Saif Ali Khan), and they all are seeking therapy. So, it will be an interesting thing, you know, for the three of them,' he said.
