
The Coast Guard wants to remove hundreds of buoys. Local boaters say: Don't take mine!
it's time to update it for the present, launching a massive review of nearly each buoy along the New England coast to determine how many can be removed.
'We're several decades into the GPS era,' said Matt Stuck, the Coast Guard's chief of waterways management for the Northeast district, who explained that the buoy system has never undergone a wholesale review in the turn-by-turn-world.

In May, the Coast Guard put out a proposal to review 4,700 buoys, which it classifies as 'Aids to Navigation,' that dot the coastline from New Jersey to the Canadian border in Maine.
That proposal listed all buoys under consideration for potential removal, and it was shockingly long, sparing no corner of the Northeast district in the first round of discussion. Big-boy ocean buoys — there are 1,700 of them in the district, serviced by a fleet of just six buoy tenders — are certainly on the list, but so are a surprisingly high number of buoys in recreational areas.

'To get good feedback, you have to give the public something good to chew on,' said Stuck, whose agency received 2,800 comments — from yachts and paddleboarders, jet skis and sailboats, aluminum Lunds and skipping Boston Whalers.
'It's fair to say that few to none said this is a great idea,' he said.
The first round of nominees made news first in the boating world, with everyone agreeing: Don't take mine. But it's happening, and so a smaller list will be released later this summer, with the Coast Guard getting more specific about what it is thinking and why.
'It's a fair question by the Coast Guard to ask,' said David Kennedy, the manager of governmental affairs for the 700,000-member Boat Owners Association of the United States. 'What do we have out there, what do people need? They are resource-constrained like everyone else.'
Kennedy said there are some that make sense
to eliminate, like the 10 deep-sea buoys lining the straight-line channel into New York City, primarily used by giant boats that just crossed an ocean with sophisticated electronics. We can get rid of some of those.
But so many of the nominees were in smaller harbors that are primarily used by recreational boaters, including notoriously rocky entrances like Woods Hole. 'We are not there yet. You really need to be in the channel,' Kennedy said. 'It's a challenging place based on the tide.'
Nine of the Woods Hole buoys that currently allow for that to happen safely did not escape the first list. But it doesn't mean all or any of them will go, just that this is a Northeast-wide conversation, the Coast Guard insists.

'We need to right-size the system for the way people are navigating,' Stuck said. 'This is not a cost-cutting measure. This is the first time we've looked at it from a wholesale perspective. The buoy system will never go away. This is about targeting the resources to the buoys that reduce the most risk for mariners.'
On the elbow of Cape Ann, there are six in a row along the coast connecting Rockport to Gloucester, whose harbormaster, Christopher Lucido, rallied local input with an email that argued good seamanship emphasizes avoiding reliance on one system, and that there is still significant value and reassurance to confirm a vessel's proximity to underwater hazards such as ledges and rock piles.
The Coast Guard has emphasized that it's not interested in getting rid of buoys that mark a danger hidden beneath. 'Eighty-five percent of the buoys we have do the highest-level risk reduction for mariners,' Stuck said, 'like directly mark a rock or shoal, or the inside of a channel so people don't cut a corner.'
There are some hazards that GPS already navigates better, and this, he said, is a conversation about those.
But for some boaters, it's a conversation about erasing parts of a map across our oceans and into our harbors, built over the centuries. About undoing a system that's a gift from the past, whispering to just remember 'red, right, returning,' and all will be safe.

Coast Guard recovers 3 bodies following plane crash off California
July 27 (UPI) -- U.S. Coast Guardsmen on Sunday recovered three bodies from the Pacific Ocean after a small plane crashed off the California coast the night prior. The twin-engine Beechcraft airplane with three people on board crashed at about 10:55 p.m. PDT Saturday between 200 and 300 yards off of Point Pinos, Monterey, Calif. It had departed from San Carlos Airport on the San Francisco Bay. A search-and-rescue operation was launched involving local and state law enforcement assets and Coast Guard boats and helicopters, resulting in the body of one occupant being recovered at about 3 a.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard said in a statement. The plane's fuselage was then located shortly before 6 a.m. by a Cal Fire drone, with U.S. Coast Guardsmen recovering the bodies of the two remaining occupants of the plane at 6:31 a.m and 9:08 a.m. The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search later Sunday. The operation lasted a combined 13 hours with 346 miles of trackline searched over a search area of about 100 square miles, it said. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office late Sunday identified the victims as Steven Eugene Clatterbuck, 60, of Salinas, Calif., James Vincent, 36, and Jamie Lee Tabscott, 44. Both Vincent and Tabscott were from Monterey. "The family and friends of the deceased have expressed that they wish to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "They ask for privacy during this difficult time." The cause of the crash is under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board said on X it was investigating.

Plane with three aboard crashes offshore near Monterey County lighthouse
Two people were found unresponsive and rescue crews were looking for a third person after a small plane crashed off the coast of Monterey County on Saturday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Monterey County officials alerted the Coast Guard's Monterey station at 10:55 p.m. Saturday that a twin-engine Beechcraft with three people aboard had crashed about 200 to 300 yards offshore, near the historic Point Pinos Lighthouse in Pacific Grove, the Coast Guard said in a news release Sunday. The plane took off from the San Carlos airport at 10:11 p.m. and was last seen at 10:37 p.m. near Monterey, according to flight tracking data from Flight Aware. The Coast Guard launched a 29-foot response boat that arrived on the scene shortly after 11 p.m. A Coast Guard helicopter and three California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection boat crews also assisted in the search, along with two Cal Fire drones. Multiple local law enforcement agencies also assisted in the response. The Beechcraft was located, according to the Coast Guard. The plane had been scheduled to leave for Gooding Municipal Airport in Idaho on Sunday morning — a two-hour, 48-minute flight — and to fly back to Monterey later in the day. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash. ABC7 News in San Francisco reported that airplane parts, including at least one wheel, had washed up on nearby Asilomar State Beach by Sunday morning. Three dead in California after small plane crash near Monterey Bay, Coast Guard says
Three people are dead after a small private aircraft crashed on California's Central Coast, according to officials. The U.S. Coast Guard station in Monterey received a relay at 10:55 p.m. Saturday that a twin-engine Beechcraft plane that took off from San Carlos with three people onboard had crashed 200 to 300 yards off Point Pinos, an outcropping at the southern end of Monterey Bay roughly 125 miles south of San Francisco. The Coast Guard launched a rescue helicopter from San Francisco and a search boat from Monterey to hunt for survivors of the crashed plane, which had a tail number of N8796R. A boat crew and drones from CAL Fire, as well as local police departments, joined the search. The wreck was eventually located and its three passengers were found dead, the Coast Guard told The New York Times. The names of the passengers were not immediately made public. The Independent has requested comment from the Coast Guard. The crash occurred roughly 30 minutes after takeoff near the Monterey Regional Airport, the flight's intended destination, according to flight tracking site Flightradar 24. Bodies were recovered off the coast of Pacific Grove, KSBW reports, and aircraft debris has washed up onshore. "I was going to sleep and heard this loud engine grumbling. Sounded like a Cessna, but it was really low and loud. It kind of felt like it was over the house, and there was a pop," Brian Mitchell, who was in the area from Sacramento visiting a relative, told the outlet. Federal officials including the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
