Pakistani mangoes draw crowds at China-Eurasia Expo as exporters set 125,000-ton target
The 2025 China-Eurasia Commodity and Trade Expo, running from June 26 till June 30 in Xinjiang's Urumqi, has brought together more than 2,800 enterprises and delegates from 50 countries and regions to deepen cooperation across Eurasia, according to the organizers.
Pakistan's Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi, along with Zhu Lifan, vice chairman of the Xinjiang government, inaugurated the Pakistan Pavilion, displaying a rich array of products, including fruit, jewelry, leather garments, luxury bags and contemporary clothing.
'The pavilion's showcase of premium Pakistani mangoes drew hundreds of visitors, making it one of the most popular exhibits,' the embassy said in a statement on Sunday. 'The fruit's popularity highlighted Pakistan's agricultural excellence and potential for growth.'
Pakistan is home to over 100 varieties of mangoes, including Sindhri, Chaunsa and Anwar Ratol.
The South Asian country aims to export 125,000 tons of mangoes this season, a 25,000-ton increase over last year's export volume, according to the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association (PFVA). If achieved, the target could generate an estimated $100 million in foreign exchange earnings.
At the inauguration, Ambassador Hashmi briefed Vice Chairman Zhu about Pakistan's enhanced focus on increasing trade and investment relations with China, including Xinjiang.
'He [Ambassador Hashmi] gave the Vice Chairman a tour of the Pavilion, elaborating the high-quality of Pakistani products. The Chinese VIP also praised the taste of Pakistani mangoes,' the Pakistani embassy said.
China is a longtime friend and strategic partner of Islamabad, with Beijing making significant investments in infrastructure and energy projects in Pakistan.
The total bilateral trade in goods between China and Pakistan reached $23.1 billion in 2024, an increase of 11.1 percent from the previous year, according to China Customs and the Pakistani embassy. China's exports to Pakistan surged 17 percent year-on-year to $20.2 billion, while imports fell by 18.2 percent to $2.8 billion.
Islamabad, which is on path to economic recovery under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, is currently making efforts to expand trade with China, Central Asian and Gulf nations to boost the $350 billion South Asian economy.

Pakistan extends deadline for Hajj applications under government scheme by one day
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan announced on Saturday it has extended the deadline for receiving Hajj applications under the government scheme by one day, with designated banks set to accept forms on Monday, as authorities reported receiving more than 110,000 applications over the past 12 days. The country has a Hajj quota of 179,210 pilgrims, of which 129,210 seats have been allocated to the government scheme and the rest to private tour operators. The religious affairs ministry said earlier the State Bank of Pakistan had accepted its request and ordered 14 designated banks to keep branches open for Hajj applications on the final day, which fell on Saturday, though the deadline was later extended in the evening. 'The receipt of Hajj applications has been extended by one day,' a ministry spokesperson said in a statement. 'Designated banks will continue receiving applications on Monday, Aug. 18," it added. "More than 110,000 applications have been received in the last 12 days, with only 7,000 seats left under the government scheme.' The ministry said the extension was on a 'first-come, first-served basis' and that applications would close as soon as the quota was filled. It clarified that no extension would be granted for the ministry's online portal, which would stop accepting applications at midnight on Aug. 16. Pakistan began receiving applications on Aug. 4. Applicants were advised to obtain computerized receipts and verify their details through the ministry's portal or the Pak Hajj 2026 app. Under the government scheme, pilgrims can choose between a long package (38-42 days) and a short package (20-25 days), with costs ranging between Rs1,150,000 and Rs1,250,000 ($4,050–4,236). Applicants are required to deposit a first installment of Rs500,000 or Rs550,000 depending on the package, while the remaining dues will be collected in November. Saudi Arabia had approved the same quota for Pakistan in 2025, though private tour operators last year struggled to utilize their share, saying they faced technical and financial delays, even as the government filled its quota of over 88,000 pilgrims.

Prominent religio-political leader's children killed, wife injured in northwestern Pakistan home shooting
PESHAWAR: A shooting at the residence of a prominent religio-political party leader, Mufti Kifayatullah, in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province left his son and daughter dead and his wife critically wounded on Saturday, while he himself sustained serious injuries, according to an official statement. A former provincial lawmaker from Malakand division and district chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party, Kifayatullah was attacked inside his residence in Batkhela, Levies officials said in a statement. 'A shooting incident took place at the house of Mufti Kifayatullah, district chief of JUI-F in Batkhela,' the statement said. 'As a result of the firing, Kifayatullah was seriously injured, his daughter and son were killed, and his wife was also critically wounded.' Authorities said the assailant was the JUI-F politician's own son, who managed to escape after the attack. The bodies and the injured were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Batkhela, where doctors later said Kifayatullah's condition was out of danger. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, though the incident appeared to be linked to some domestic dispute. The JUI-F, a major religio-political party with deep roots in northwestern Pakistan, has long exercised influence in the area. However, it struggled in the 2024 general elections, with leaders blaming security threats for their inability to run a full campaign.

Pakistan confirms ‘successful deployment' of satellite launched with China
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has confirmed the 'successful deployment' and 'operational readiness' of the country's latest remote sensing satellite, launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC) in China, on July 31. The satellite, PRSS-1, will primarily be used in the fields of land resource surveys and disaster prevention and mitigation, and it will help promote the development of Pakistan, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said this month. SUPARCO said the satellite, following the successful launch, has established 'stable contact' with ground stations and begun capturing and transmitting high-resolution imagery, greatly enhancing data availability and reliability for various national sectors. 'The satellite will deliver high-quality imaging capabilities to support a wide range of applications, revolutionizing urban planning, infrastructure development, and regional planning by monitoring urban expansion and growth trends,' it said in a statement on Friday. 'It will strengthen disaster management efforts through timely data for early warnings and rapid response to floods, landslides, earthquakes, and other hazards, while also aiding environmental protection by tracking glacier recession, deforestation, and climate change indicators.' The satellite will enhance agricultural productivity through precision farming, mapping of crop patterns, and improved water resource management, thereby contributing to food security, according to SUPARCO. In addition, it will play a strategic role in national development projects such as the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) by mapping transportation networks, identifying geohazard risks and facilitating efficient resource allocation that will not only improve decision-making across multiple sectors but also promote sustainable socio-economic development and strengthen Pakistan's technological autonomy. The satellite launch and deployment mark another step in Pakistan's growing engagement with outer space through Chinese assistance. 'This remarkable accomplishment highlights Pakistan's advancing capabilities in space-based technologies, and SUPARCO's dedication to strengthening national infrastructure for Earth observation,' SUPARCO said. 'It not only contributes to achieving self-reliance but also opens new avenues for advancement, sustainability and informed decision-making across key sectors.' China and Pakistan are also preparing to send the first Pakistani astronaut into space aboard China's Tiangong space station, with training programs currently underway.
