A Woman and Baby Were Found Naked and Dead in a Park. Now an American Man Is Under Arrest in Greece
Surveillance footage, witness testimony and fingerprints led authorities to Ford
Prosecutors believe the deaths were a double murder, and Ford is awaiting an extradition hearing in Greece as the investigation continuesGreek authorities arrested an American man on Friday on suspicion of killing a 30-year-old mother and her baby whose bodies were found by police at a park in Italy.
The 46-year-old man, identified as Rexal Ford, was detained on an arrest warrant issued in Italy, citing 'strong evidence' of his alleged involvement in the death of the baby girl and her mother — who are also believed to be American — Italian news outlets, L'Unione Sarda, Il Messaggero and Corriere della Sera reported, citing prosecutors.
The bodies of the mother and baby were found in Rome's Villa Pamphili park on Saturday, the local outlets reported. Both were found naked and without any identification.
Investigators in Italy told CBS News that the cause of the woman's death was unknown, 'but there is a reasonable suspicion that it is a double murder,' Deputy Prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini said to the outlet.
According to Rome Chief Prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi, the mother was killed several days before the baby and was found several hundred meters away. The mother was found under a black bag, Lo Voi said to the local outlets.
'It is not exactly understandable that someone who was with a woman and a baby girl, once the woman and the girl died, whom he carried in his arms, would then leave the country without calling for help, without seeking assistance,' Lo Voi said, per CBS News. 'In itself, that doesn't look good.'
Video surveillance and witness reports showed that the three were spotted together on several occasions, sometimes speaking in English, Corriere della Sera reported. At one point, Ford and the woman were seen arguing in the street, and police took down his information, which later led to his arrest.
Police discovered the identities of the woman, her baby and Ford, by cross-referencing footage of them seen at a soup kitchen nearby the Vatican and testimonies of witnesses who were in the park along with homeless people nearby, the Italian outlet reported.
Authorities were able to track Ford down due to fingerprints left on the bag covering the mother when she was found dead by police, CBS reported. He was found on the Greek island of Skiathos through cellphone data.According to Corriere della Sera, authorities found the baby's pink dress in a trash can nearby where their bodies were found. Police estimate that the baby was around 6 to 8 months old.
The mother had a tattoo of a skeleton with a surfboard that seemed to have the colors of the Lithuanian flag, the Italian outlet reported. Forensic teams also found a total of 40 items at the scene, including a bra and sleeping bag.
When Ford's warrant is forwarded to Greek officials, he will appear in court for an extradition hearing, the local outlets said, citing Greek police.

Colorado funeral home investigated after decomposing bodies found behind hidden door
DENVER (AP) — Colorado authorities said Thursday they are investigating a funeral home operated by a county coroner where inspectors found several decomposing bodies. The bodies were found this week in a room behind a door that was hidden by a cardboard display during an inspection of Davis Mortuary in Pueblo on Wednesday after Brian Cotter, an owner and the county coroner, asked them not to go inside the room, according to a document from state regulators. The inspectors found a 'strong odor of decomposition,' it said. Cotter told inspectors that some of the bodies had been awaiting cremation for about 15 years and that he may have given fake cremated remains to family members, according to the document, which explained why the mortuary's license was suspended. Colorado for years had some of the weakest rules for funeral homes in the nation with no routine inspections or qualification requirements for funeral home operators. That allowed numerous abuses, including a pending case involving nearly 200 decomposing bodies that were found being stored at room temperature in a building in Penrose, Colorado, about 30 miles from Pueblo. A sentencing of one of the funeral homes owners in that case on charges of corpse abuse is set for Friday. Cotter and his brother bought Davis Mortuary in 1989, according to the business's website. It said the brothers brought with them an 'old school' way of operating that they learned from their father, who owned and operated funeral homes in Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska. A woman who answered the phone at the mortuary said it had no comment and declined to make Cotter available for an interview. Cotter did not immediately respond to a message left with the Coroner's office. Officials from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Pueblo police, the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office and the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies plan to hold a press conference about the criminal investigation Thursday afternoon. ____ Brown reported from Billings, Montana.

Justice Department signals investigation of Fed Governor Lisa Cook
A Justice Department official is set to probe Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook after she was accused by a member of President Donald Trump's administration of committing mortgage fraud, according to a letter sent Thursday to Fed Chair Jerome Powell. The letter, seen by CNN, was written by Ed Martin, a lawyer at the department who's tasked with investigating mortgage fraud. Martin said the situation 'requires further examination.' In a letter dated August 15, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte said that Cook claimed two properties — a home in Michigan and a condo in Atlanta — as her primary home addresses. Pulte, a vocal Trump ally, said in an interview with Bloomberg on Thursday that he looked into Cook based off a tip. He added that his agency has used artificial intelligence software from Palantir to track potential mortgage fraud. In his letter, Martin also said: 'I encourage you to remove Ms. Cook from your Board. Do it today before it is too late!' 'After all, no American thinks it is appropriate that she serve during this time with a cloud hanging over her,' he said. However, only the president has the power to remove a Fed official — and only for cause. In a response to Pulte's accusations, Cook was defiant, saying in a statement that she has 'no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet.' She added that she is 'gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.' The Fed declined CNN's request for comment. This is a developing story and will be updated.
