AmBank's corporate strategy off to good start

The Star28-07-2025
PETALING JAYA: AMMB Holdings Bhd (AmBank) will continue to focus on driving loan growth through the corporate and business banking segments as outlined under its Winning Together 29 (WT29) strategy.
It also plans to reposition its retail franchise as a net funder, with an emphasis on operational excellence to enhance cost efficiency.
These are among the highlights AmBank shared during its Strategy Day last Friday, which marked the completion of the first full year under the WT29 strategy.
Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research said successful execution of the strategy will reinforce the investment case of the stock, which was trading at relatively undemanding valuations and an attractive 5.8% dividend yield.
The research house said there was also potential for a higher dividend pay out.
'WT29 appears off to a firm start. While the group delivered a solid returns on assets of 1.02%, its cost-to-income ratio (CIR) rose slightly to 44.6% against a target of below 40% due to investments and cost pressures.
'This constrained profit before provision growth to 5% year-on-year, below the 9% compound annual growth rate target,' HLIB Research said in a note to clients.
According to the research house, the banking group's management maintains that its investments were laying the groundwork for future improvements in its CIR.
Meanwhile, the bank's capital remains strong with Common Equity Tier-1 ratio supporting a move towards a 60% dividend payout ratio.
While HLIB Research is bullish, MBSB Research maintained a 'neutral' rating on the stock, noting that the positives, including a potential increase in dividend payouts, improved loan and non-interest income growth and large recoveries have already been priced in.
MBSB Research also expects headwinds in relation to asset quality issues and drag from its slower-growing retail segment.
It also sees return on equity dipping below the current 10% level in future years as a consequence of its fast asset growth rate before its financial year 2029, ending March 31 (FY29) target of 11% is achieved.
It said the stock is currently trading at forward FY26 price-to-book value (PBV) of 0.79 times, which is close to the firm's PBV valuation of 0.81 times with a 5.2% dividend yield.
'There's also a chance that operating expenditure comes in higher than expected, despite the group already replacing 180 employees with artificial intelligence (AI) and intending to rationalise 200 more in the next three to five years, as management repeatedly stresses that the FY29 CIR target of 40% is the hardest to achieve,' said MBSB Research.
On FY26, the research house said AmBank is on track to achieve RM2bil consensus net profit figure, which implies that its upcoming first quarter ended June 30, should see a result close to RM500mil.
The bank shared that key themes for FY26 will centre on operational excellence and digitalisation.
On the operational front, the focus will be on mobilising end-to-end process engineering in retail banking to improve turnaround times and maintain its competitive edge.
This will be coupled with continued liability management, aiming to bring funding costs closer to the overnight policy rate (OPR).
On the digitalisation front, the group plans to build out its data foundation and adopt a comprehensive AI and technology suite to enhance both internal productivity and customer experience.
However, analysts noted that the bank's management is taking a wait-and-see approach regarding a major investment in a new digital core, deferring the decision until a midterm strategy review.
Management also guided that the recent OPR cut is expected to cause two months of margin compression as the bulk of repricing will occur in December.
The estimated impact is around RM10mil per month or three to four basis points on net interest margin, HLIB Research said.

Malaysia-Vietnam-Singapore green grid to boost ASEAN energy integration

ON the regional front, green-electricity interconnection project linking Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore will facilitate cross-border trade in renewables, directly advancing the ASEAN Power Grid's goal of a resilient, sustainable, and highly integrated energy market. 'Solar power will be the main driver in achieving the country's overarching RE goals. On top of the CRESS and CREAM, we expect the government to maintain its aggressive rollout of large scale solar (LSS) schemes,' said MBSB Research. Package A with a quota of 1.5GW is for land-based solar power plants while Package B is for the remaining 500MW, specifically for floating solar. Following that, we expect the Energy Commission (ST) to announce the bidding for LSS6, which will likely introduce another 2GW of solar capacity with battery energy storage system (BESS) requirements. Sarawak's strategic positioning as a hydro-centric renewable hub will be reinforced through a dedicated grid link to Peninsular Malaysia, further unifying the nation's clean-energy infrastructure. Integrating Sarawak's strength in hydropower balances Peninsular Malaysia's thermal-heavy profile, reducing reliance on coal and gas plants during high-demand periods. This will be a transformative move for the power sector. We expect EPCC contractors and M&E firms to be among the initial beneficiaries from this. In a report last year, ASEAN Energy said the interconnection plan is to connect Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak through grid-to-grid high-voltage DC (HVDC) subsea cables, with a planned 676km line capacity of 2 x 800 MW, or a total of 1.6GW. The implementing agencies are expected to be Tenaga Nasional and Sarawak Energy. Under Strategy A1.5 of the 13th Malaysian Plan, Malaysia will launch a nuclear-power program slated to come online by 2031, integrating nuclear alongside renewables to decarbonise its grid. MyPOWER Corporation will serve as the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organization, responsible for governing the national nuclear program in accordance with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards. We view that nuclear power offers Malaysia a powerful lever to secure low carbon, reliable baseload capacity, which addresses the intermittency concerns and bolsters energy security. However, it comes with steep capital requirements, complex waste and safety obligations. We maintain our POSITIVE stance on the Utilities sector and the Renewable Energy subsector, underpinned by the structural policy tailwinds for a deep decarbonisation trajectory in line with the targets under NETR. We view that solar remains a multi-year growth engine, which will benefit EPCC players such as Solarvest (NR), Samaiden (BUY, TP: RM1.59), Pekat (BUY, TP: RM1.86), Sunview (BUY, TP: RM0.54) and Northern Solar (NR). Tenaga (BUY, TP: RM16.40) will be the key beneficiary in the asset ownership space from both RE capacity expansion and grid upgrade investments. Meanwhile, the recent request for proposal (RFP) for new gas-fired power generation capacity also presents a positive catalyst for the sector. This will be undertaken via two categories, which is the extension of the concession period for existing gas-fired power plants with expiring or expired existing power purchase agreements (PPAs) and through the development of new gas-fired power plants. This is expected to add about 8GW of new capacity. We expect independent power producers (IPPs) such as Malakoff (NR) and YTL Power International (BUY, TP: RM4.51) to be among the front runners for this new scheme. —Aug 5, 2025 Main image: DriveElectric

Bleak outlook for media sector as Adex slumps

KUALA LUMPUR: The media sector is expected to remain weak in the second half of 2025, weighed down by ongoing structural challenges and subdued advertising expenditure (adex), said HLIB Research. The industry continues to struggle with the rapid decline of traditional media, while digital transformation efforts have delivered slow and uneven results. "Adex remains subdued, weighed down by cautious global sentiment and tighter corporate marketing budgets," it said in a note. "While monetisation of digital platforms is growing, it still lags the sharp decline in legacy revenue streams." Adex across all segments has been disappointing. Nielsen data showed total adex from January to May this year shrank 17 per cent compared to the same period last year, reflecting ongoing market weakness. Digital adex, once a bright spot, plunged 47 per cent, suggesting advertisers are cutting back across all platforms. Other media segments also suffered declines: free-to-air television adex fell by six per cent, newspapers by 12 per cent, magazines by 10 per cent, radio by 23 per cent and cinema by a staggering 50 per cent. "That said, there is potential for a modest uplift in the second half, supported by the upcoming Sabah state election by January 2026 and pre-promotional activities ahead of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign," the firm said. While both Media Prima Bhd and Astro Malaysia Bhd have made digital investments through REV Media and digital content platforms respectively, HLIB Research said these initiatives have yet to translate into material gains. "The overall share of digital advertising captured by local players remains small compared to global tech giants like Meta, Google and TikTok. "These international platforms dominate digital ad spend due to their superior targeting capabilities and vast user bases, leaving Malaysian companies with limited bargaining power and thinner margins," it said. HLIB Research added that monetising digital content remains a challenge, especially in a market where consumers are reluctant to pay for online media.

Axis-REIT's acquisition of Port Klang warehouse a positive move

PETALING JAYA: Axis Real Estate Investment Trust's (Axis-REIT) decision to acquire a logistics warehouse in Port Klang for RM80mil will bode well for the group, say analysts. In a report, RHB Research said the purchase was a proxy to the resilient and growing industrial property segment and maintained a 'buy' call on the group. 'While relatively small in scale, the acquisition supports the REIT's ongoing strategy of delivering consistent inorganic growth. The purchase price implies a decent gross yield of 6.4% which is reasonable, since the asset is fully leased under a six-year term, and is strategically located within a key logistics hub,' it noted. Concurrently, the research house raised its financial year 2027 (FY27) earnings by 1% to reflect the new rental contribution, while adjusting for additional financing costs. 'Given the minor earnings adjustment, we maintain our target price (TP) of RM2.23, implying a FY26 yield of 4.6%, which we think is fair, given the stable outlook for the REIT's industrial assets.' BIMB Securities Research is also positive on the REIT, stating it was consistent with the REIT's strategy of expanding logistics exposure through high-quality, income-accretive assets. It said, upon completion of the acquisition, earnings-accretion is expected from FY26, contributing approximately 1% to 2% to distributable income. 'The fully tenanted property ensures immediate rental visibility, while the 6.4% yield and modest gearing impact make it an earnings-accretive addition that supports the net asset value growth and solidifies the group's standing as Malaysia's leading industrial REIT,' it said. On its outlook, BIMB Securities said the REIT's yield trajectory remains positive, underpinned by rental growth and a RM430mil acquisition target for 2025. 'Its acquisitive strategy should drive further value and income accretion. We maintain our 'buy' call with a TP of RM2.17. 'At RM2.01, the REIT offers an estimated 13% total return, combining an 8% price upside and a 5% yield, supported by continued portfolio expansion and earnings-accretive asset addition,' it noted. Meanwhile, MBSB Research maintained its 'neutral' call on the REIT, noting it was slightly positive on the purchase of the warehouse as it is in line with its expansion strategy or Axis-REIT via asset acquisition. 'The acquisition is the first acquisition of Axis-REIT in FY25. 'We note that it is targeting to grow its portfolio via asset acquisition with estimated value of acquisition targets at RM430mil in the second quarter of FY25, while the latest asset acquisition marks the execution of the acquisition targets,' it said. In revising its earnings. MBSB Research said it placed a higher TP of RM2.07 from RM2.06, based on a dividend discount model.
