Tamil Nadu Minister says Google app enough, slams Hindi imposition in schools

India Today19-06-2025
Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Thursday reiterated the state government's opposition to the imposition of Hindi, arguing that language learning must remain a matter of choice, not compulsion. Referring to a recent controversy in Karnataka, where around 90,000 students reportedly failed their examinations due to the imposition of Hindi, the Minister questioned the logic behind forcing students to study a language they may not choose voluntarily.advertisementQuestioning the necessity of learning Hindi for translation or communication purposes in the modern era, he said, 'We want to make our children scientists, architects, doctors. But they want to make them translators, for which a Google app is enough.' He argued that mobile technology now provides easy access to real-time translation, making it unnecessary to 'toil and study for a year' just to understand or speak another language.
'There is a difference between option and compulsion. If you are compelled to study, do not accept it,' the Minister said while speaking at a public function. He invoked the words of DMK founder CN Annadurai, who, in 1967, had declared that development should not come at the cost of linguistic imposition. 'Anna said imposing is different from educating. He said that if they say you can only develop if you learn Hindi, we do not need such development,' Anbil Mahesh said.advertisementThe Minister stated that Tamil Nadu's stand has always been to encourage multilingual learning, as long as it remains voluntary. 'Learn as many languages as you want. Learn all the 22 languages in the 8th Schedule. But do not impose,' he added. His remarks come in the wake of continuing resistance in Tamil Nadu against the push for Hindi under the Union government's National Education Policy (NEP), which has faced criticism for allegedly promoting a one-language agenda. The Minister's comments also reflect the DMK government's long-standing policy of two-language education and its emphasis on linguistic pride and regional identity.

DMK is a corporate company meant for elite, not for masses: EPS

Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday reiterated his charge that the ruling DMK has always been functioning as a 'corporate company', mainly serving the elite section in the society and not for masses in Tamil Nadu. Addressing a public gathering in Tiruvannamalai as part of his State-wide tour, Mr. Palaniswami said unlike AIADMK where a ordinary person can reach top position in the party over the years and could also even become a Chief Minister like him, persons with ordinary background cannot climb up in the hierarchy of DMK and become its top leader. 'I am the example of an ordinary person becoming a Chief Minister and heading a powerful political party. It's possible only in AIADMK where only loyalty matters and in DMK, it promotes dynastic politics,' he said. The AIADMK leader claimed surging crowds during his State-wide tour clearly exemplifies support of people for the part. It also shows their frustration towards the DMK government. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has been daydreaming of winning his second term in the 2026 assembly elections. Mr. Stalin is faraway from reality, he said. The former Chief Minister criticised the Ungaludan Stalin Scheme, which was launched by Mr. Stalin in July to address people's grievances at special camps in the State, as the State machinery including government officials has been used for the scheme, mainly to propagate about DMK to voters ahead of assembly polls. 'After four years in power, Mr. Stalin was aware only now about people's grievances in 46 different areas that should be addressed. The scheme is a ploy to draw voters towards DMK,' he alleged. Contrary to the claim made by Mr. Stalin that 98% of 525 poll promises were fulfilled, Mr. Palaniswami listed many poll promises made by DMK during 2021 polls that remain unfulfilled. Some of them include increase in total working days from 100 to 150 under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme, cancellation of education loan, ₹100 subsidy for LPG cylinders and reduction of petrol and diesel prices in the State, he claimed.

Rs 1 lakh crore rhetoric – Season 2: Rahul Gandhi slams PM Modi's I-Day jobs promise

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's I-Day announcement to create employment opportunities for 3.5 crore young Indians, saying that it is a rehearsed figure of an old promise, and accused him of running 'Rs 1 lakh crore rhetoric – Season 2' and delivering little in the last 11 years. 'Rs 1 lakh crore rhetoric - Season 2! Even after 11 years, Modi ji's same old rhetoric, same rehearsed figures,' Gandhi posted in Hindi on X. In his I-Day address, PM Modi announced the launch of a new scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, to create employment opportunities for 3.5 crore young Indians. Modi further said that Rs 1 lakh crore will be earmarked for the scheme, which will entail a one-time incentive of Rs 15,000 to those who get their first job in the private sector. 'Last year, a promise of 1 crore internships from Rs1 lakh crore – this year, again a Rs 1 lakh crore job scheme! What's the truth? In response to my question in Parliament, the government admitted – fewer than 10,000 internships. The stipend was so low that 90% of the youth refused it,' Gandhi wrote. In the post, Gandhi also tagged an unstarred question raised by him in the Lok Sabha concerning the status of the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme (PMIS). In the question dated July 21, 2025, Gandhi sought to know whether the government has a roadmap for providing one crore internships over the next four years under the PMIS, including details and internships planned for 2024-25. Replying to Gandhi, Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, said that the government received 10.77 lakh applications, while it has made 1.53 lakh offers to the applicants. The reply further showed that 9,453 applicants have joined as interns. Citing the numbers, Gandhi said, 'Modi ji has no new ideas left. From this government, the youth will get no jobs, but only rhetoric.'
