Govers hat-trick sparks Kookaburras comeback win
The Kookaburras, who had seven penalty corners in the first half, were given a flying start when Victorian Cooper Burns showed quick hands in the circle to net in the fourth minute.
England were level nine minutes later when Zach Wallace scored via a scrappy field goal before home debutant Henry Croft put them ahead in the second quarter.
And when Sam Hooper made it 3-1 just before halftime with a fierce drag flick, the match certainly looked to be going the hosts' way.
But the final quarter became the Govers show in a dazzling two-minute spell, as the 28-year-old Wollongong star pulled one back for the Kookaburras with a 39th-minute drag flick, before equalising after blasting home from a penalty corner.
Govers then completed the fightback with a diving deflection to wrap-up a fine win for the men in gold, which ensured they remain unbeaten in the European Pro League competition.
It completed a memorable day for Tasmania's Jack Welch, who brought up his 50th Kookaburras cap.
But also for his teammate Davis Atkin, one of Australia's openly gay athletes, as the Kookaburras donned rainbow socks on a day dedicated to celebrating diversity and inclusion.
"I said to the boys this morning that I just really appreciate everyone being as inclusive as they are, and this was as simple as wearing socks, but I'm able to flourish as much as I can," Atkin said.
"It's hard to describe the feeling. I had this nervous, anxious feeling of butterflies before the match, that this really means something to me. It means something to so many people."
Player-of-the-match Govers admitted England were a difficult nut to crack.
"England at home is always a tough match, they really stuck it to us in the first half," Govers told 7plus.
"We were lucky to bounce back and get those goals in the second half. They were team goals. Someone has to get the corners, and I'm just on the back end of great team play, but very happy to have done the job and gotten those in."
The Kookaburras can defend their title if they win their remaining three matches against England and Germany, with game two against England also tonight in London.
It was a tougher day for Australia's women, however, who suffered a tough 4-0 defeat to Germany in their penultimate Pro League match in Berlin.
The Hockeyroos, who also wore rainbow socks in support of inclusion and visibility in sport, were confident following a victory over England but they were unable to contain the hosts who lifted themselves off the bottom of the table thanks to goals from Sara Strauss, Lynn Krings, Sophia Schwabe and Jette Fleschutz.
Blake Govers has fired a stunning match-saving hat-trick as Australia fought back to secure a remarkable Pro League victory over England in London.

Boomers win third straight Asia Cup title after one-point thriller over China
Australia have lifted the Asia Cup for the third time in a row after a magnificent, nerve-shredding and ultimately euphoric 90-89 victory over China at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah. There could not have been a tighter finish, with China missing a go-ahead shot as time expired. It was a supreme team effort but leading the way for the Boomers was the unstoppable Xavier Cooks, who paved the way with 30 points on an efficient 13-of-17 shooting. He also collected nine rebounds and constantly broke down China's defence with his drives. He was named the game's most valuable player. Jaylin Galloway, playing in his first Asia Cup final, also rose to the occasion, drilling six triples on his way to 23 points and five rebounds. He was later named the tournament's MVP and nominated in the All Star Five along with fellow Boomer Jack McVeigh. William Hickey delivered when it mattered most, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks, including clutch plays down the stretch. For China, Hu Mingxuan carried the offensive load with 26 points and five three-pointers, while veteran big man Hu Jinqiu supplied a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double that kept his team in contention until the final seconds. China struck first with a strong opening frame behind Jinqiu's inside scoring and Mingxuan's timely shooting, building a 25-17 lead. That cushion stretched to 36-21 in the second quarter, before Cooks powered a furious Australian fightback trimming the deficit to just four at halftime. The third quarter saw momentum swing wildly. Galloway's fastbreak slam capped a 9-0 surge that briefly put the Boomers ahead, only for China to hit back with big triples from Cheng Shuaipeng and Lei Meng. Galloway's buzzer-beating corner three left Australia trailing by just three entering the final frame, setting the stage for a tense finish. Cooks and Galloway combined for clutch baskets, while Mingxuan answered with big shots of his own. Hickey's backdoor finish, a key putback and Will Magnay's huge block kept Australia in front by the slimmest of margins. With under a minute left, Hickey's uncontested putback gave the Boomers the lead for good before Cooks and Zhao Rui traded free-throws. Mingxuan's potential game-winner at the buzzer bounced off the iron, sealing the 90-89 victory for coach Adam Caporn's side. For Australia, the win in Saudi Arabia means more than just another trophy. Since debuting in 2017, the Boomers have been untouchable in Asia Cup play, now boasting an 18-0 record and cementing themselves as the modern powerhouse of Asian basketball.

Magnificent Australia edge out China to rule Asia again

Chelsea draw blank in Palace stalemate
Chelsea suffered a Club World Cup hangover as they were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace to open their Premier League campaign on Sunday. Palace were denied an early opener when Eberechi Eze's free-kick was ruled out by a VAR reivew for Marc Guehi obstructing the Chelsea wall. New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to snatching a winner, but the newly-crowned world champions were blunt in attack against a well-organised Palace defence. The Eagles key duo Guehi and Eze started despite mounting speculation the England internationals are set to join Liverpool and Tottenham respectively. Eze thought he had opened the scoring with a blistering free-kick that had too much power for Robert Sanchez. The goal was disallowed for Guehi's role in creating a gap by man-handling Moises Caicedo into the Chelsea wall. Chelsea's demolition of European champions Paris Saint-Germain to win the Club World Cup last month had raised the Blues hopes they can challenge for a first Premier League title since 2017. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro shone in the 3-0 win over PSG in New York 35 days ago, but were anonymous as Enzo Maresca had to turn to his bench for inspiration. Estevao scored against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in his final game for Palmeiras. The Brazilian has been hyped as one of the world's brightest young talents but lacked the composure to finish when he sliced high and wide from the middle of the box. Nottingham Forest made light of manager Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-season fears with a dominant 3-1 win over a much-changed Brentford. Chris Wood struck twice either side of Dan Ndyoe's debut goal for Forest on a nightmare afternoon for new Brentford boss Keith Andrews. The Bees have lost their manager, captain and top scorer in the off-season. Thomas Frank left to take charge of Tottenham, Mbeumo got his dream move to United and Arsenal secured Christian Norgaard. Yoane Wissa was also missing from the Brentford squad ahead of an expected move to Newcastle. Igor Thiago's first goal for the club from the penalty spot late on was the only consolation for the visitors. Arsenal, runners-up for the last three seasons, begin their quest for a first title in 22 years later away at a revamped Manchester United.
