Panthers QB Bryce Young struggles on Friday, as 'dominant' defense racks up sacks and INTs

USA Today3 days ago
Quarterback Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers offense have looked pretty smooth throughout the first week of training camp. But they won't be able to win every session.
That was true this morning, when the defense pushed back following a particularly fine performance by Young and company from their previous outing on Wednesday. In fact, head coach Dave Canales began his post-practice by commending the unit for their strong effort.
"Defense—great response today. A dominant practice for the defense," Canales stated. "Some turnovers, some beautiful hits. Guys squaring the offensive guys up, showing each other the type of physical play that they're expecting each other—which I love. I love that it's coming from them.
"It's [Tre'von] Moehrig, it's Lathan Ransom showing up. Thomas Incoom had a great day today. Pat Jones had some nice rushes. I can go on and on, but it was just a lot of physical play. Trevin [Wallace] had a nice hit out there.
"And that's what we need. The offense needs to be able to be prepared for that kind of physical nature of the game. So, I love the finish of the practice."
The finish of practice saw second-year cornerback Chau Smith-Wade pick off Young on a pass intended for 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan. Young experienced the same fate earlier in 11-on-11 drills, courtesy of interceptions by Pro Bowl corner Jaycee Horn and veteran safety Nick Scott.
He was also "sacked" a number of times, with defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton controlling the trenches and leading the charge. Incoom, a third-year outside linebacker, notched a couple of takedowns as well.
So, yeah, Friday was undoubtedly a much-needed step in right direction for the Carolina defense—which allowed the most points in NFL history (534) this past season.

Titans add UFL defensive lineman Josiah Bronson

Veteran defensive lineman Josiah Bronson is the latest player to parlay a stint in the UFL into another shot in the NFL. The Titans announced that they have signed Bronson, who most recently played for the UFL's Memphis Showboats during their spring 2025 season. Although most UFL players don't make it to the NFL, the spring minor league has served as a springboard for several players who had previous NFL shots to get another one. Bronson has spent time with the Saints, Browns, Cowboys, Dolphins, Patriots and Colts in the NFL, appearing in a total of eight NFL games. The Titans released defensive lineman Devonte O'Malley to make room for Bronson on the roster.

Micah Parsons' viral Steelers trade comments resurface amid Cowboys contract drama

Micah Parsons sent shockwaves through the NFL with his trade request becoming official — but this wasn't the first time he's discussed leaving the Cowboys, as his viral Steelers trade comments have begun to resurface on social media. Back in February, Parsons sat down with former Steelers CB turned CBS Sports analyst Bryant McFadden in a one-on-one interview. McFadden asked Parsons if he rocked with the Steelers and claimed he could see the young defender wearing the Black and Gold — and in response, the Cowboys superstar dropped a bombshell. "Yeah, I do," Parsons said, confirming his interest in the Steelers. "I said, if I ever returned home, it was going to be Pittsburgh." Parsons, a Pennsylvania native, would surely be welcomed with open arms in Pittsburgh — but the path to making that dream a reality is nearly impossible, potentially requiring the Steelers to part ways with another high-profile edge rusher. Sean McVay says Rams hope to ease Matthew Stafford back to football in the near future

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is described as week-to-week as he deals with back issues, and head coach Sean McVay says the Rams hope they can get Stafford back, slowly but surely. Asked if Stafford might be capable of doing the jog-through practice the Rams have scheduled for Monday, Mcvay said he's not ready for that. "No, he'll be doing a workout on his own during that time period. He is able to do a little bit more, which is good, and things are progressing well, but he won't take part in the jog-through because he'll be doing some other stuff," McVay said. So what is Stafford doing while the Rams are in team work? McVay made it sound fairly basic. "It's static throwing," McVay said. "It's some of the unloaded running on the treadmill. Sometimes it might even be walking. He's able to do a little lighter cardio and able to do some good core work. It's more just functional strength surrounding the area, making sure you don't do anything to set yourself back based on the trajectory he's doing. We are looking forward to getting him and easing him back into football hopefully in the near future." The Rams open the season at home on September 7 against the Texans, which gives them five weeks to ease Stafford back to football.
