How a 1950s Mobil service station on the NSW coast got second life as viral entertainment hub
The ServoFood Truck Bar is based near Wollongong in NSW and has quickly become a cult favourite, not just for providing a pit stop for drivers, but also for its drag shows, live gigs, fire pits and open-air movie screenings.
Social media commentators have taken to Instagram and Facebook praising the lifestyle hub.
'The Illawarra got way cooler the day the servo opened,' one fan commented on Instagram.
'Thank YOU for creating such a safe and wonderful space,' raved another.
The Servo was the brainchild of local man James Spinks, who told a local publication just how he'd given new life to an old Mobil petrol station.
'We're doing things on a shoestring budget; it's totally DIY,' he said.
'You've got to have either money or time, and we took the time approach.
'It's been good. A big part of it is listening to the stories about what the place was, not just The Servo but also Port Kembla,' he told Region Illawarra in September 2024.
The former service station hosts a variety of gigs and events, ranging from showcasing Indigenous art from the local Aboriginal corporation to hosting a series of food trucks and outdoor gigs.
Originally an actual service station, built around the 1950s, sections of The Servo have previously been a gym and a cafe.
The idea to create a food truck, bar and performance space began in 2018.
As part of the food truck idea, customers can enjoy deep-fried lasagne toasties one weekend, and slow-cooked pork cordon bleu bao the next.
It is located near the Port Kembla steelworks, with the space also featuring mural covered walls, fairy lights and reclaimed timber furniture.

Hulk Hogan 'felt weak and embarrassed' before passing away
Hulk Hogan felt "weak" and "embarrassed" shortly before he passed away. The wrestling legend died from cardiac arrest on July 24, aged 71, and Eric Bischoff, his good friend, has now shared details of his last-ever meeting with Hogan. Speaking on the 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff podcast, he explained: "I could tell he was weak. He sounded tired. "[Hogan] said, 'I really want to see you, but I'm kind of embarrassed for you to see me this way because I've been pretty sick.' When I look at you, I don't see the same thing you see when you look in the mirror, so f*** that, I'll be down Monday." Hogan's personality still shone through in their conversations, despite his health struggles. Eric shared: "It was work for him to have a conversation but he was the same guy." Earlier this week, Brooke Hogan took to social media to pay tribute to her dad and to reflect on their turbulent relationship. The 37-year-old star said on Instagram: "When he left this earth, it felt like part of my spirit left with him. I felt it before the news even reached us. I know he's at peace now, out of pain, and in a place as beautiful as he imagined. He used to speak about this moment with such wonder and hope. Like meeting God was the greatest championship he'd ever have." Brooke also used her post to "clear a few things up" regarding their estrangement. The realty star wrote: "It was a series of private phone calls no one will ever hear, know, or understand. My father was confiding in me about issues weighing on his heart, both personal and business. I offered to be a life raft in whatever capacity he needed. I told him he had my support. I begged him to rest, to take care of himself." Brooke and her husband, Steven Olesky, actually moved closer to the wrestler as he battled with health problems. She said: "We had been through almost 25 surgeries together, and then all of a sudden he didn't want me at surgeries…everything started getting covered in a thick veil. It was like there was a force field around him that I couldn't get through. (sic)"

Indigenous heritage celebrated in Alkimos
Celebrating Noongar culture and connection to country, an eye-catching Indigenous mural has recently been unveiled in Alkimos. Created by renowned Whadjuk Noongar artist Jade Dolman, the mural is on the half basketball court at Leatherback Park in the Alkimos Beach estate. The public art piece tells the story of Karli Spring, an Indigenous heritage site on the Alkimos Coastal Foreshore, alongside the lifecycle of the two-spotted line-blue butterfly and has interwoven elements of rain, flowers, reeds and the Yanchep caves. 'Our Indigenous engagement initiatives demonstrate how thoughtful development can preserve and celebrate Indigenous heritage while creating vibrant, inclusive spaces for all. 'By working directly with local artists and traditional owners, we're creating spaces that authentically reflect the cultural significance of the land our communities are built on.' City of Wanneroo mayor Linda Aitken highlighted the mural's role in fostering youth engagement and cultural connection, linking it to this year's NAIDOC Week theme. 'This year's NAIDOC Week theme 'The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy' encourages us all to think about how we can support a better future for the next generation,' Ms Aitken said. 'With the addition of this incredible mural, the youth space at Leatherback Park now provides a place for young people to come together, socialise, stay fit and healthy, and connect with their community and culture.' Brooke Hogan 'didn't want to be in Hulk Hogan's will'
Brooke Hogan asked to be removed from her father's will in 2023. Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan died from cardiac arrest on July 24, aged 71, and Brooke, 37, reportedly made the will request two years ago because she "didn't want to get caught up in a financial battle when he passed", according to TMZ. Brooke is said to have wanted to protect her father from people she believed "were taking advantage of him" but after many years of disagreements, she contacted his financial manager and asked to be removed as a beneficiary. Brooke is reportedly set to receive a small sum from a life insurance trust and is planning to put the money towards her children's college funds. Meanwhile, following her father's death, Brooke took to social media to pay tribute and to reflect on their turbulent relationship. In a lengthy post on Instagram, Brooke explained: "When he left this earth, it felt like part of my spirit left with him. I felt it before the news even reached us. However, she does not have any regrets about how she dealt with the situation. She said: "I know in my heart I did everything I could. He knew I would run through a burning building for him. And in many ways, along the path of life, I did. He knows how deeply, how hard and how purely I loved him. I am at peace knowing this."
