India proposes retaliatory duties against US auto tariffs
"The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations would take the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the US," according to a notification of the WTO being circulated at the request of India.
India has notified WTO's Council for Trade in Goods of its proposed suspension of concessions and other obligations under certain WTO provisions. "This notification is made in connection with safeguard measures extended by the United States of America on imports of automobile parts from India," it said.
On March 26 this year, the US adopted a safeguard measure in the form of a tariff increase of 25% ad valorem on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks, and on certain auto parts from India.
These measures apply from May 3, 2025 as regards auto parts, and for an unlimited duration. The measures have not been notified by the US to the WTO, but are, in essence, safeguard measures.
India has maintained that the measures taken by the US are not consistent with the GATT (General Agreement on Trade and Tariff) 1994 and the agreement on safeguards. As consultations sought by India on these tariffs have not taken place, "India reserves the right to suspend concessions or other obligations", the WTO notification added.

The safeguard measures would affect $2,895 million imports annually into the US of the relevant products originating in India, on which the duty collection would be $723.8 million. "Accordingly, India's proposed suspension of concessions would result in an equivalent amount of duty collected from products originating in the US," it said.
To ensure the effective exercise of its right to suspend substantially equivalent concessions or other obligations, the multinational body said, India has reserved its right to adjust the products as well as the tariff rates.

British Grand Prix 2025 Qualifying: Max Verstappen beats Britons Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton to grab pole
Image credit: Formula 1/X The Britons dominated the first two free practice sessions on Friday, but it was Dutch driver Max Verstappen who clinched pole position in the British Grand Prix 2025 Qualifying session on Saturday. He will be joined on the front row by this season's leading driver, Oscar Piastri, who qualified second. His teammate, Lando Norris, starts close behind in third and remains one of the favorites to win his home race at the Silverstone Circuit. British F1 Grand Prix Qualifying results Max Verstappen's pole at Silverstone came as a surprise, as the Red Bull driver had failed to impress during any of the practice sessions. This marks his fourth pole of the season. He has won two races so far and has now set the tone for the British GP final on Sunday. Interestingly, Mercedes driver George Russell, who also struggled during the practice sessions, managed to secure fourth place on the grid. Like Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, this Briton is now considered a strong contender for the podium at Silverstone. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton made a strong start to his home weekend by topping the first free practice session (FP1) on Friday, but he ultimately qualified fifth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo His teammate, Charles Leclerc, who had won FP3 earlier in the day, will start sixth. This could be the highest disgorgement amount ever directed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). Live Events In its interim order, the regulator has debarred JSI Investments, JSI2 Investments Pvt Ltd, Jane Street Singapore Pte Ltd, and Jane Street Asia Trading -- entities collectively referred to as the Jane Street Group -- from trading until further notice, while continuing its investigation. Addressing an event organised by the Bombay Chartered Accountants Society here, the Sebi chief made it clear that transparency in disclosing related party transactions, managing conflicts of interest and presenting material developments in a timely manner are "non-negotiable responsibilities" for the CAs. "You have a critical responsibility to ensure that corporate governance is not reduced to a checklist," he advised the CAs. He also spoke in favour of not having too much of compliance. "We are also mindful that too much of information, too much of compliance adds to a big compliance burden which may not actually serve the interest that we really intend to serve," he said. "We would also like to see wherever we have the possibility of doing better results with less compliance, less information, less onerous responsibility and less micromanagement on the part of regulator," he said, adding that all the suggestions will be welcome.
