PM announces formation of force to supervise missiles

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the formation of a new military branch — the Army Rocket Force Command — in a move aimed at strengthening the country's conventional warfare capability in the wake of recent hostilities with India. Speaking at a ceremony marking the country's 79th Independence Day late Wednesday night, the prime minister said the new command, equipped with advanced technology, would enable the armed forces to 'target the enemy from every direction' and represented 'another milestone' in bolstering the nation's defensive posture. The formation of the Rocket Force follows a brief military confrontation with India earlier this year in May, referred to as Marka-e-Haq, or Battle of Truth. The conflict erupted after the 22nd April attack in Pahalgam and concluded with a ceasefire on 10th May. Sharif described the military engagement as a swift and decisive response by Pakistan's armed forces, claiming victory within 'three to four days'. 'India forgot that wars are not won with weapons alone, but with the spirit of the nation,' he maintained. The establishment of the new command comes shortly after the federal budget for 2025-26 fiscal year, announced in June, which included a 20 percent increase in defence spending — a rise widely viewed as part of a broader strategy to modernise country's armed forces. At the Independence Day event — held late on Wednesday night — the prime minister unveiled a digital model of the proposed Marka-e-Haq Monument. The ceremony featured a military parade, a flypast by the Pakistan Air Force Falcons, and participation by personnel from Türkiye and Azerbaijan. Fireworks marked the culmination of the event as the national anthem was played at midnight. Senior officials in attendance included President Asif Ali Zardari, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, as well as Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and other senior civil and military officials. The prime minister praised Field Marshal Munir, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu for their leadership during the conflict, calling it the beginning of a 'new Pakistan'. He also paid tribute to his brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, for defying international pressure in 1998 to conduct Pakistan's nuclear tests in Chagai, Balochistan. 'Our nuclear arsenal is not for aggression. It is only for defensive purposes,' he added. In a move aimed at promoting political unity, the prime minister also invited all political parties to join a proposed national charter, Misaq-e-Istehkam-e-Pakistan (Charter for Pakistan's Stability). 'Differences have their own place,' he said, 'but we are all one for the sake of our beloved Pakistan.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

CM vows to play vibrant role in freeing country from poverty

LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif while addressing the unveiling ceremony of 'Marka-i- Haq' Monument, Museum and Park Project, said: 'I promise that I will leave no stone unturned to improve the lives of the people. We pledge to play our vibrant role in freeing Pakistan from poverty. Now we will wage a war against poverty and ignorance. We will fight to improve the country and will wage a war against sedition and disorder.' 'To win a war, it is not only military equipment which is necessary, but possessing unwavering faith in Allah Almighty as well. When the Pakistan Air Force downed the Rafale jets with JF-Thunders, no one could believe it,' she said. The CM outlined,' The entire nation salute those who downed the enemy's Rafale aircraft. I pay profound tribute to my Commander-in-Chief brother, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who displayed exemplary wartime leadership and led Pakistan to victory. This Independence Day celebration is marked for the whole Pakistani nation. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with the Pakistan Armed Forces like an iron wall.' She highlighted,' If we had been politically divided, we could never have won the war against the enemy. From the Battle of Truth( 'Marka-i- Haq'), the world learned what 'Bunyan-um- Marsus' means. During my visits in various colleges across Punjab for the distribution of laptops to the talented students, I understood the phrase: 'This homeland is yours; you are its guardians.' The entire nation got united and became an iron wall against the enemy's aggression.' The CM underscored, 'Independence Day is dedicated to those mothers who send their sons to the battlefield with a lion's heart. The whole nation, Nawaz Sharif and myself pay tribute with profound reverence to the brave mothers who bid farewell to their young sons to the battlefield. We salute those brave daughters who sacrifice their marital life for the sake of sacred homeland, and the children who bear the pain of orphanage for the sake of the defence and protection of our dear homeland. The Independence Day is meant for those sons who gave their precious blood to safeguard their dear motherland.' She maintained ,' We dedicate the Independence Day to the valiant warriors who fought bravely on the borders. Every year we celebrate our Independence Day, but on account of Marka-i- Haq, this year's rejoice is unparalleled. Today is dedicated to the valiant soldiers who gave a befitting reply to the enemy's aggressive designs, to the leadership, officers, and soldiers of the Pakistan Armed Forces, and to Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, who made the country a nuclear power and rendered its defence impregnable.' She noted,' I commend Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, the Bank of Punjab, IDAP, PHA, and the media team, and I request everyone to rise today with a firm resolve to make our sacred homeland greater and stronger than ever before. I also urge the workers, farmers, teachers, students, and politicians to set aside their political differences and give foremost priority to the progress and prosperity of their country. For serving the country and the nation is an honour not granted to everyone. If one attains an elevated position but is devoid of good intentions, it leads to disgrace.' She added,' The journey of decline that began in 2018 has ended. This soil is very fertile; it only asks for a little water and a little hard work. Pakistan has defeated an enemy four times greater its size with full zeal and determination. I commend the entire administration for celebrating the Independence Day with complete vigour and zest along with decorating and illuminating the buildings across Punjab. I pray to Allah Almighty that may Pakistan lives forever and we see it reaching great heights in our lifetime.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Shaza announces digital transformation roadmap

ISLAMABAD: On Pakistan's 78th Independence Day, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced a digital transformation roadmap under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Digital Nation Pakistan vision, pledging to turn the country into a self-reliant, technology-driven economy. The minister, addressing a high-profile ceremony of leaders from government, industry, startups, and academia, paid tribute to Marka-e-Haq — Pakistan's victory over India in May — calling it a historic moment that demonstrated national courage, professionalism, and technological capability. She lauded the Armed Forces, particularly COAS Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for their leadership, dedication, and sacrifices in steering both the nation's defence and its technological advancement. Highlighting Pakistan's global recognition, Khawaja noted that the country achieved Tier-1 'Role Modelling' status in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index and climbed 14 ranks in the UN E-Government Development Index to enter the High EGDI category for the first time. She celebrated progress in digital inclusion, revealing that as per the 2025 GSMA Gender Gap Report, the mobile internet gender gap had reduced from 38 per cent to 25 per cent, with eight million women coming online in FY 2024-25. Women's mobile internet usage nearly doubled from 10 per cent to 19 per cent, meeting the personal target she set upon assuming office. Khawaja outlined the future roadmap under Digital Nation Pakistan, focusing on youth empowerment, improved governance, industry facilitation, and building a robust Digital Public Infrastructure. Key initiatives include: National AI Policy 2025 to promote ethical AI innovation and economic growth; National Fiberisation Initiative to expand high-speed internet access nationwide; IMT Spectrum Auction to ensure 5G readiness, attract foreign investment, and boost telecom growth; Satellite Internet Services for universal connectivity; Uninterrupted Internet Policy for IT Companies to ensure reliable, high-quality connections for IT exports; DigiSkills 3.0 to train over 3.3 million IT professionals in three years, including 300,000 via Huawei and 200,000 via Google. She linked the spirit of independence to digital sovereignty, stating that true freedom in the modern era means self-reliance in technology, innovation, and governance. Concluding, she vowed: 'With Marka-e-Haq, Pakistan proved it cannot be ignored. On this 14th August, we commit to using technology to build an equitable and prosperous Pakistan within our lifetime.'
