Ian Wright excluded from ITV's Women's Euros coverage as Eni Aluko gets return

Daily Mirror5 hours ago

Ian Wright is a surprise omission from ITV's punditry line-up for Euro 2025 in Switzerland, but Eni Aluko will feature on the channel's coverage of the tournament
Eni Aluko will be a pundit for ITV during the Women's European Championship. Ian Wright, however, will be absent from the channel's coverage of the tournament.
The former players-turned-pundits clashed earlier this year when Aluko appeared to suggest that Wright had "blocked" opportunities for women in the media. Aluko told BBC Radio Four's Woman's Hour that the former Arsenal striker, who has regularly championed the women's game, needed to be aware of the 'finite opportunities for women.'

When asked about Wright's work on women's football, she said: "I think we need to be conscious, and we need to make sure that women are not being blocked from having a pathway into broadcasting in the women's game.

"It's still new, it's still growing. There's a finite amount of opportunities and I think that men need to be aware of that."
Her comments were heavily criticised, leading to her issuing an apology to Wright via her Instagram story. Wright responded by saying he was left 'very disappointed' by Aluko and that he 'can't accept' her apology.
He said on Instagram: 'I've got to say I'm very disappointed by what Eni has said. She knows how I've helped her, supported her publicly.
'And I know the previous conversations she's had with me and my management. So, for me, I've seen your apology on social media, but I can't accept it. But I also want to move on from it.'
ITV backed Wright at the time, calling the 61-year-old 'an incredible advocate and ally, and a brilliant broadcaster of women's football.'

However, he will not be part of ITV's coverage as England looks to defend the continental crown they won three years ago. That will be a surprise to some, given that Wright was used during England's qualifying campaign and during the Lionesses ' run to the 2023 World Cup final.
His absence is not believed to be related to his spat with Aluko, who will return to ITV duty after not being part of the channel's coverage of England's 5-0 win over Portugal in May.

In her apology to Wright, Aluko called him a 'brilliant broadcaster and role model whose support for the women's game has been significant.'
She added: 'In my interview with Woman's Hour this week, I was trying to make a broader point about the limited opportunities for women in football – whether that's in coaching, broadcasting or commercial spaces – and the importance of creating more space for women to thrive on and off the pitch.
'But it was wrong for Ian's name to be raised in that conversation, and for that I sincerely apologise. I've known and worked with Ian for many years and have nothing but love and respect for him.'

Hamza Igamane Rangers to Lille latest as clubs wait in wings

The Ligue 1 have made contact with Gers over their interest in the Moroccan forward but, contrary to other reports, have not made an official approach. However, it is understood the 22-year-old's representatives have had contact with Lille chiefs and held talks over personal terms. French outlet Foot Mercato is now reporting Igamane is "very excited" about the prospect of the move, which could fetch Rangers over £10 million. They could team him up with World Cup winner Olivier Giroud as they look to both strikers to replace Canada star Jonathan David. Rangers signed Igamane for £1.7m from AS Far Rabat in his homeland and could be about to earn a significant mark-up after just a year.

England add Jofra Archer to squad ahead of second Test against India

The 30-year-old pace bowler, who has not played Test cricket since February 2021, returns to the England set-up in the only change to Ben Stokes' squad that secured a thrilling five-wicket win in the series opener at Headingley. Archer's Test career has been derailed by a string of injuries. THERE IT ISSS!!! 🤩 — Sussex Cricket (@SussexCCC) June 23, 2025 He played his first red-ball match since May 2021 this week, marking his return with a wicket in Sussex's County Championship draw against Durham in Chester-le-Street. With the start of the 2025-26 Ashes series less than five months away, former England captain Michael Vaughan feels Archer needs to play at international level this summer but advised waiting until at least the third Test at Lord's. 'I hope England aren't too funky in terms of just swapping and changing for changing's sake; I like seeing teams play over a period,' Vaughan told the PA news agency. 'Yes, you want to see Jofra throughout the summer, that's not a debate. We need to see Jofra play a Test match or two but on the back of just one innings and one four-day game in four years, I just don't see the rush. 'Let him play for Sussex for one more week and then potentially pencil him in for the Test match at Lord's.' Archer burst on to the international scene in 2019, bowling the decisive super-over in England's World Cup win over New Zealand at Lord's and taking 22 wickets at 20.27 in four Tests that followed against Australia in the drawn Ashes series. But an elbow injury first sustained in 2020 and that required four operations curtailed Archer's progress and he then had to work his way back from a recurring stress fracture in his back, which he first sustained in 2022. He returned to action for England in their ODI series against Bangladesh in March 2023, but was then sidelined by elbow issues and did not play international cricket until May 2024. Archer was ruled out of England's ODI series against the West Indies last month with a thumb injury sustained playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. 'We don't quite know how his body's going to stand up,' continued Vaughan. Jofra with the breakthrough! ⚡️ — Sussex Cricket (@SussexCCC) June 23, 2025 'All the talk is that his body's good. But let's not be too harsh on him in terms of building him up so much, because he hasn't played. 'At times he looked short of a gallop in the Champions Trophy, then he had spells in the IPL that were very good but that's just four overs. 'I mean, England need him. You look at a barrage of a quick bowlers that you want to arrive in Australia with, England will want him in that that squad. 'But I wouldn't want to rush him too soon to then take him back a step or two.' Warwickshire batter Jacob Bethell and bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who did not feature at Headingley, have retained their places in the squad. The second Test in a five-match series starts next Wednesday, with the following Tests at Lord's (July 10-14), Old Trafford (July 23-27) and the Oval (July 31-August 4). England men's Test Squad: Ben Stokes (Durham), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Sam Cook (Essex), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

Heather Knight aiming for World Cup as she recovers from hamstring injury

The 34-year-old's summer was ruined by a significant hamstring tendon issue suffered during last month's T20 clean sweep against the West Indies. Unable to feature in the upcoming series against India, she has instead booked a holiday to Switzerland and plans to watch Sarina Wiegman's England launch their European Championship title defence with Group D fixtures against France and the Netherlands in Zurich on July 5 and 9. This year's ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India is scheduled to begin on September 30, with England's opening match coming against South Africa on October 3. 'That World Cup is what I'm aiming for, it's what I've got my sights set on,' Knight told the PA news agency 'There's always bumps in the road with rehab but hopefully everything goes smoothly and I can be back early September and get a bit of cricket in before the World Cup. 'Things are tracking pretty well to hopefully be fit for that. It's healing well. 'We're not gonna rush things. It's a pretty gnarly injury: I ripped off the tendon quite well from the bone, so I have to be a little bit careful coming back.' Knight, who sat out three subsequent ODIs against the Windies and is also missing London Spirit's title defence in this season's Hundred, was on crutches for two weeks but avoided surgery. She is determined to make the most of her enforced absence amid the 'extremely dull' rehabilitation process. 'I'm going to Switzerland next week to watch the Lionesses play, so that's something I wouldn't have been able to do if I was playing cricket,' said Knight. 'I always love watching women's sport and it's the opportunity to go to a pretty cool country. 'I know a few of the players loosely: I've done a few bits with Leah (Williamson, England captain) and come across a few of the girls at events. 'It's really cool to see what they've done for women's sport in this country. 'Hopefully they can be successful because that Euros win in the UK (in 2022) was a really special moment for women's sport in this country and changed the face of football.' It has been difficult few months for Knight. She was stripped of the England captaincy following nine years in the role in the wake of an Ashes humiliation in Australia before sustaining the long-term injury in the early weeks of the new era under head coach Charlotte Edwards. 'The Ashes was pretty tough; I was sad that things had ended like that but the ECB decided they wanted me to have a fresh start and that was their decision and completely fine,' she said of the captaincy, which passed to Nat Sciver-Brunt. Great to have two of the driving forces behind the Knight Stokes Cup at Lord's today! — Lord's Cricket Ground (@HomeOfCricket) June 26, 2025 'I'm still very motivated to keep playing for England.' Alongside England men's captain Ben Stokes, Knight has given her name to a new national state school competition, which will launch in 2026 and conclude with finals at Lord's. The Barclays Knight-Stokes Cup – named after two of England's greatest state-educated cricketers and the brainchild of another ex-England skipper, Michael Vaughan – aims to drive state school participation in the sport. 'It's really important that we keep making cricket accessible,' said Knight. 'I'm really proud to put my name to it.' :: Schools can sign up for the inaugural Knight-Stokes Cup at
