CBCI claims priest, nuns ‘attacked' in Balasore; cops say no such plaint
Police said there has been no such incident reported in the district even as CBCI, in a press statement on Friday, urged the state govt to take swift action to identify and prosecute those responsible for the alleged incident.
According to reports cited by CBCI, Father Lijo, parish priest of St Thomas Church in Jaleswar, along with another priest, two nuns, and a catechist, was returning to the parish after conducting a requiem mass in a nearby village.
The group was allegedly stopped, abused and manhandled in Basta area, with accusations of religious conversion levelled against them. The nuns were rescued by local women.
CBCI further alleged that Lijo's mobile phone was forcibly taken and not returned, while the catechist, Durjyodhan, was brutally assaulted, and his motorcycle was damaged. The mob, consisting of around 70 people, were said to have included many outsiders.
Responding to the allegations, sub-divisional police officer (Basta), Manas Deo said there was no complaint regarding any such incident, either of forced conversion or anyone trying to stop them. "We got to know that there was a death ritual. All those present belonged to one community. There were some heated arguments over something, but the matter did not come before the police," Deo said.
CBCI urged authorities to uphold the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution, ensuring that every citizen can live and practice their faith without fear. CBCI affirmed its commitment to closely monitor the situation and defend the rights, dignity and safety of all citizens, particularly the Christian community.

Thrashed over Rs15k loan, Gurgaon man jumps out of a moving car to escape, dies
Gurgaon: A 38-year-old pantry worker, who was being thrashed by two persons over a Rs 15,000 loan he needed to repay them, succumbed to injuries he suffered when he jumped out of a moving car in a desperate bid to escape. Two men, Praveen Rana and Aryan, were arrested in connection with the case. Ajay Tiwari — a resident of Ashok Vihar Phase-3 Extension — had borrowed Rs 30,000 from Rana, a property dealer, on April 25. Despite repaying Rs 15,000, Rana persistently pressured Tiwari for the remaining amount, issuing threats that escalated the situation. According to cops, on the night of Aug 13, Rana and his friend Aryan abducted Tiwari from his workplace in a Maruti Swift, demanding the outstanding debt. The situation, however, took a dire turn when she received a call from Tiwari's colleague, Manish, informing her that the pantry worker was critically injured and hospitalised. Initially admitted to Manipal Hospital in the city, Tiwari's condition worsened later that night. He was transferred to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, where he was placed on a ventilator. Tiwari passed away on Friday, prompting the hospital authorities to alert police. Police investigation later revealed that after Rana and Aryan forcibly took Tiwari into their car, they assaulted him when he pleaded his inability to repay the remaining money anytime soon. In an attempt to escape, Tiwari jumped out of the moving vehicle near Bajghera, suffering fatal head injuries. The two accused left him at the scene. The car used in the crime was later recovered by police. According to sources, Tiwari — terrified and cornered — repeatedly warned Rana and Aryan of his intention to jump. A video shot by one of the accused captured Tiwari's frantic warnings and screams before he leaped from the car near the Bajghera police station underpass. Although the accused did not physically push him, their actions led police to file an FIR for kidnapping, assault, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. ASI Sandeep Kumar, a spokesperson for the city police, said, "A dispute over the loan led the suspects to forcibly take Tiwari into their car and assault him to pressure him for repayment. In an attempt to escape, Tiwari jumped out of the moving car, sustaining a head injury." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). SUV kills contractor on stationary bike, rams parked truck
Times News Network New Delhi: A 40-year-old contractor, a father of five and the lone breadwinner of his family, died after allegedly being hit by an SUV in west Delhi's Moti Nagar around 1am on Saturday. Bechu Lal was seated on his bike and speaking on the phone when a Mahindra Thar roared in from behind. Such was the impact that the bike and the SUV then crashed into a truck parked nearby. Lal died instantly while the SUV driver fled, leaving the vehicle behind. Police said a liquor bottle was found in it. This is the second fatal accident involving a Thar in a week in the capital. Last Sunday, a Thar mowed down two people on a footpath in Chanakyapuri. A case has been registered. The SUV was found registered in the name of a west Delhi resident. Investigators said the rear of the bike and the front of the SUV were heavily damaged. CCTV footage showed the road was busy when the white SUV, at high speed, lost control and hit the truck. Lal's bike was parked near the truck. CCTV footage is being studied to ascertain the route the driver took to flee. Shiv Kumar, Lal's relative, said the contractor lived in west Delhi's Prem Nagar with his 15-year-old son, while his wife and four daughters live in Gonda, UP. "On Friday night, he went out to meet someone at the hospital when the accident occurred near the hospital gate," he said. When Lal did not return home, the family began searching for him. Around 5am, they received a call from police. Lal was the only earning member of the family and had recently fixed the marriage of his 19-year-old elder daughter. "That seems uncertain now," Kumar said. "The other children are still studying. With Lal gone, it will be extremely difficult for the family to manage their day-to-day expenses and continue the children's education." Family members said Lal specialised in plaster of Paris work and did not have a fixed income. On most days, he earned between Rs 500 and Rs 900, a relative said, most of which was sent to his family and spent on the children's education.
