Gurgaon: A 38-year-old pantry worker, who was being thrashed by two persons over a Rs 15,000 loan he needed to repay them, succumbed to injuries he suffered when he jumped out of a moving car in a desperate bid to escape.
Two men, Praveen Rana and Aryan, were arrested in connection with the case. Ajay Tiwari — a resident of Ashok Vihar Phase-3 Extension — had borrowed Rs 30,000 from Rana, a property dealer, on April 25. Despite repaying Rs 15,000, Rana persistently pressured Tiwari for the remaining amount, issuing threats that escalated the situation.
According to cops, on the night of Aug 13, Rana and his friend Aryan abducted Tiwari from his workplace in a Maruti Swift, demanding the outstanding debt.

In a state of panic, Tiwari's wife transferred Rs 1,000 to Rana, pleading for her husband's release. The situation, however, took a dire turn when she received a call from Tiwari's colleague, Manish, informing her that the pantry worker was critically injured and hospitalised.
Initially admitted to Manipal Hospital in the city, Tiwari's condition worsened later that night. He was transferred to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, where he was placed on a ventilator.
Tiwari passed away on Friday, prompting the hospital authorities to alert police.
Police investigation later revealed that after Rana and Aryan forcibly took Tiwari into their car, they assaulted him when he pleaded his inability to repay the remaining money anytime soon. In an attempt to escape, Tiwari jumped out of the moving vehicle near Bajghera, suffering fatal head injuries. The two accused left him at the scene.
The car used in the crime was later recovered by police.
According to sources, Tiwari — terrified and cornered — repeatedly warned Rana and Aryan of his intention to jump. A video shot by one of the accused captured Tiwari's frantic warnings and screams before he leaped from the car near the Bajghera police station underpass. Although the accused did not physically push him, their actions led police to file an FIR for kidnapping, assault, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
ASI Sandeep Kumar, a spokesperson for the city police, said, "A dispute over the loan led the suspects to forcibly take Tiwari into their car and assault him to pressure him for repayment. In an attempt to escape, Tiwari jumped out of the moving car, sustaining a head injury."

Disproportionate Assets: CBI books NBRC engineer over 97% surge in his assets

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against an assistant engineer at the National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) in Gurgaon's Manesar, based on a preliminary inquiry in July, suggesting 'a more than 97 per cent increase in his assets in two years'. The preliminary inquiry into the alleged possession of disproportionate assets by assistant engineer Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary was initiated in January, following a written complaint filed by then NBRC Director Professor Krishanu Ray in September 2024, according to the CBI's FIR. The CBI booked Choudhary, who has been serving at the NBRC since March 2009, under Section 13(2), read with Section 13(1), of the Prevention of Corruption Act. During the investigation, the CBI assessed Choudhary's financial records for 2019 and 2020, suggesting: on January 1, 2019, he had Rs 2.34 lakh in his three bank accounts, which increased to over Rs 4 lakh by December 31, 2020, along with a surge in his total assets worth Rs 62.60 lakh, including the purchase of a house valued at Rs 50 lakh, a Maruti Suzuki Brezza priced at Rs 8.47 lakh, according to the FIR. The CBI calculated his total income during the given two-year period at Rs 38.85 lakh — Rs 24 lakh in salary and Rs 6.45 lakh family income from other sources — and pegged his expenditure for the same period at Rs 16.52 lakh, including Rs 8.67 lakh kitchen expenses; after deducting his expenditure, the available fund stood at Rs 22.33 lakh, the FIR reads. According to the CBI's FIR, the agency determined that Choudhary's disproportionate assets amounted to Rs 37.92 lakh, after subtracting available funds and the opening bank balance from his total assets as of December 31, 2020, reflecting a 97.59 per cent increase in assets in the given two years. In a report submitted on July 21, CBI Sub-Inspector Meenakshi Yadav recommended an FIR against Choudhary for 'accumulating huge assets to the tune of Rs 37.92 lakh, disproportionate to his known sources of income, and intentionally enriching himself illicitly, constituting an offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act'. The NBRC is dedicated to advancing research on brain function in both health and disease, as well as cultivating skilled professionals capable of conducting interdisciplinary studies in neuroscience.

2 house owners held for Bengaluru fire that took 5 lives, Deputy CM Shivakumar warns of demolition

A day after five persons, including a family of four, were charred to death, the Bengaluru city police Sunday arrested two owners of the building where the accident occurred. The arrested persons have been identified as Balakrishnaiah Shetty, 68, and Sandeep Shetty, 43. On Saturday, Madan Kumar Purohit, 36, his wife Sangeetha Kanwar, 32, their two children Mithesh, 8, and Vihan, 5, and a neighbour, Suresh Kumar, 26, died after a fire broke out in the central Bengaluru building where they lived. All deceased were natives of Rajasthan. A case was registered based on the complaint filed by Gopal Singh, brother of Madan Kumar Purohit. The initial probe has revealed that the fire took place due to a short circuit. According to a police officer, plastic mats were illegally stored on the ground and first floor of the building. Madan Kumar Purohit and his family lived on the third floor. Three workers who were sleeping on the first floor managed to escape, said the officer. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar Sunday visited the spot and said, 'It is clear that the building owners are at fault. I am going to issue a notice to all the building owners to strengthen their buildings, or else we will have to demolish all of them. The state government has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation each for the victims' families.'

Wife booked after husband kills self over ‘her affair with cousin'

Meerut: A 29-year-old man in Bulandshahr allegedly took his life after he found out that his wife was in a "relationship with her cousin brother". Police on Sunday said an FIR has been registered against his wife, her lover and her family for "abetment of suicide" along with BNS sections for "voluntarily causing hurt" and "intentional insult". He was found hanging in his home on Friday night. Prior to his death, he recorded a 15-minute video and uploaded it online, where he accused his wife of having an affair. "She wanted to get a govt job, so I bore all the expenses and sent her to Delhi for studies after marriage but she cheated on me. Study was an excuse; she wanted to live with her cousin. They were in a sexual relationship, which I discovered later," Kumar could be heard saying in the clip. He also shared screenshots of chats between his wife and her lover, accused his in-laws of threatening him and pressuring him to divorce. "Her family gave me life threats, once even pointing a gun at me on the road. I loved her so much, and now there is no other option left for me but to die," he alleged. Rohit Kumar, Sohit's elder brother, told TOI that the couple met at a coaching centre where Sohit taught. "They fell in love there. In Oct 2023, they got married but Tamanna's family did not attend the wedding. Around eight months ago, she began insisting on going to Delhi for studies. Sohit finally agreed six months ago, but she never returned," he said. He added, "On Aug 15, Sohit appeared normal and even went to drop his nephew at school, where he attended the Independence Day function. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After returning home, he went into his room looking anxious. Two hours later, my sister informed us about the video Sohit had posted online. My father rushed to his room and found him hanging from the ceiling fan. The police were then informed. We never imagined he would take such an extreme step. " SP (rural) Tejveer Singh said that an FIR under BNS sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 352 (intentional insult) has been lodged against the woman and four others. "Further investigation is underway based on the allegations made in the suicide video," he said.
