Two men charged with attempted murder after daylight machete attack in town
Two men, aged 60 and 30 years old, have both been charged with attempted murder in relation to a machete attack in Co Down.
They are also both charged with possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Both men are due to appear at Downpatrick Magistrates Court today.
As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
The charges are in relation to a report of a serious assault of a man at the Tipperary Lane area of Newcastle on Saturday (June 21).

The victim was left with serious injuries to his face, hands and legs after being assaulted with what is believed to have been a machete, police previously said.
The incident happened at around 12:40pm in the afternoon.
The suspects made off from the scene but were later detained by officers in the Bunkers Hill area.

A judge has jailed a 27 year old Ennis man for asking a mother on Snapchat could he have sex with her two year old daughter. Judge Comerford said that there was an intent to harm a child and the public understandably shows revulsion at this type of crime. Judge Comerford said that there has been no admission by Mr Quinn to the offence of communicating with the woman online for the purpose of facilitating the sexual exploitation of her then two year old girl. Judge Comerford said that Mr Quinn's actions in the Snapchat exchange with the mother were 'irrational and impulsive'. He said: 'The child was never going to be in danger because her mother was always going to protect her.' Judge Comerford said that he was going to put the offence in the lower level of such offending for one to four years in prison where prison terms of up to 14 years can be imposed. He said that there was 'an absence of direct or indirect consequence for the victim'. Judge Comerford said that the offence didn't seem to be in any way calculated. Investigating Garda in the case, Garda Nadine Keane said that the two year old girl's mother came to Ennis Garda Station to make a complaint that Mr Quinn had communicated via Snapchat and asked her if he could have sex with her two year old daughter. Counsel for the State, Sarah Jane Comerford BL (instructed by State Solicitor for Clare, Aisling Casey) said that in the Snapchat, Mr Quinn said that during the conversation he asked the woman if he could 'feek' her two year daughter. Ms Comerford said that there is no dictionary definition for ''eek' but the woman understood that Mr Quinn wanted to have sex with her daughter. Later in the exchange on his request, Mr Quinn asked 'if you let me, I would…' and persisted when asking 'but would you let me?' Garda Keane said that the mother had known Mr Quinn for a number of years and had been messaging him on and off for six months before August 29th 2020. Garda Keane said that the woman kept screenshots of Mr Quinn's request. Judge Comerford said that Mr Quinn always denied making the comments and had argued that some third party had interposed themselves on his Snapchat. However, Judge Comerford said that 'those denials set at nought by really good police work'. Judge Comerford set a headline sentence of 26 months and reduced it to 18 months. The judge said that he could not suspend any part of that 18 months due to no admissions being made by Mr Quinn so there can't be any steps towards rehabilitation. Judge Comerford said that Mr Quinn is now on the Sex Offenders register as a result of the conviction and can be identified in the reporting of the case.

The family of a 13-year old Louth boy with autism who was expelled from his local primary school say they are looking forward to a new chapter as he has been allocated a place in the new school for children and teenagers with complex special needs in Castleblayney that opens in September. Senan Maguire missed out on three months of education and was unable to make his confirmation after he was expelled from a north Louth school earlier this year. His parents David and Tina watched as their son, who also has a moderate intellectual disability and is suffering with PTSD since the sudden, tragic death of his younger sister in 2018, struggled without the routine provided by school. They were told that their son's presence in the school was a threat to his safety and that of others and he was blamed for assaults leading to other people being injured. "It's a shame how so many people let him down,' says David. 'All we wanted to do was to get him our little boy through to June so he could finish his education.' They received the letter informing them of his expulsion on World Autism Day, April 2, and unsuccessfully sought places for him in other schools in the county as there were no available places. 'It was heart-breaking watching Senan at home, not understanding why he couldn't go to school,' recalls David. Now, however, they are hoping that he can start a new chapter. 'We're very lucky that Senan has been allocated a place in the new school opening in Castleblayney in September,' says David. "He also got two weeks with a behaviour therapist and he loved it, and has another week in August. He did July provision with ABACUS in Drogheda and again he had a great time.' Woman charged with impeding apprehension of driver allegedly involved in Stephen's Day hit-and-run
Nicole Fallon (35) is the second person to be charged following the deaths of husband and wife Anthony Hogg and Georgina Hogg Moore. A Dublin woman has been charged with impeding the apprehension or prosecution of a driver who was allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the lives of a couple of St Stephen's Day. Nicole Fallon (35) is the second person to be charged following the deaths of husband and wife Anthony Hogg and Georgina Hogg Moore in Blanchardstown last Christmas. Mr Hogg, 40, and his wife Georgina, 39, were struck while crossing a road near Blanchardstown Shopping Centre at around 5.45pm on December 26, 2024. The couple, married with children, lived in the nearby Whitestown area. John Halpin (45) is currently before the courts charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of the couple, as well as failing to offer assistance at the scene. Mr Halpin is accused of failing to stop a vehicle, which was allegedly involved in causing injury to Mr Hogg and Ms Hogg Moore. He is also charged with failing to offer assistance to the couple with the intent to escape civil or criminal liability. Gda Crowe and Gda Wood said gardai had no objection to bail being extended to the new sheets. Gardai said the DPP had directed trial on indictment in the circuit court on the charges. Defence solicitors Tertius Van Eeden and Aoife McNicholl said there was consent to an adjournment to a date in September. The accused have not yet indicated how they intend pleading to the charges.
