Met Éireann names the ‘best day' of the bank holiday weekend but showers expected

While there will again be showers on Sunday, it could be the day that gets the best of the weather over the bank holiday weekend. This bank holiday weekend will see plenty of showers but there will be one or two dry breaks as we make our way into June. It will start off dry in many areas today, though southern parts of the country will see some mist and drizzle. Rain will then spread across the country during the morning and afternoon, followed by a mixed day of sunny spells and scattered showers. Today will be 'quite breezy', according to Met Éireann, with highest temperatures of 15 to 20C. There will be some heavy rain overnight in the west and north of the country, but it will turn patchier heading towards the morning. Lows will range from 7 to 11C. Woman (22) convicted of shoplifting spree ‘looks like she couldn't care less'

'You must pay before you leave a shop. It's a simple concept,' the judge said. A 22-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to shoplifting offences has received a suspended sentence. Sharon McDonagh, with an address at the time at Cluskey's Accommodation Centre, Carrick Road, Dundalk, was sentenced to six months, suspended for two years, on one of the theft charges. Evidence was heard that two females entered a Centra in Dundalk and took three cans of Red Bull and a hairbrush, total value €10.95. The defendant was among three women who went into a Centra shop in Drogheda and removed groceries worth €149, while she was with a male and two other women who stole property valued €675 at TK Maxx in Drogheda. In this instance, €450-worth was recovered. All of the offending occurred last September. There were previous convictions, including for theft. Judge Nicola Andrews remarked that community service orders don't seem to have had an effect. Solicitor Paula Tiernan said that Ms McDonagh had a troubled family background. She had been homeless for a time before her mother secured accommodation for the family. She had engaged with services to deal with anger management. The suspended sentence was marked on the TK Maxx charge with the others taken into consideration. Looking at Ms McDonagh, Judge Andrews remarked: 'You're kind of sick and tired hanging around here. I get all that. 'Your solicitor will explain the reality to you.' The judge continued that 'it looks like she couldn't care less'.

M1 motorist caught travelling at 176kmh loses licence for two years

Judge and gardaí refuse to reduce dangerous driving charge A motorist who drove at 176kmh on the motorway at Dunleer, Co Louth, has received the mandatory two-year disqualification after being convicted of dangerous driving. Olatunji Johnson (53), Duncairn Avenue, Belfast, pleaded guilty to the offence after gardaí and the judge refused to reduce the charge to careless driving. Gda Alan Macklin testified that at 11.19am on January 19 last at Athclare, Dunleer, M1 Southbound, he was operating a speed check when he detected an Audi A3 travelling at 176kmh. Traffic was moderate and conditions fair. Gda Macklin continued that it took a 'considerable distance' for him to catch up with this car but as soon as he came behind it, Mr Johnson pulled over. Solicitor Dermot Monahan said that his client had no previous convictions. Mr Johnson was living in Ireland 10 years, married with two children and working part-time in security, earning between €200 and €300. He co-operated with gardaí. The loss of his licence would effect his work. Judge Stephanie Coggans imposed a €350 fine and two-year driving disqualification. Bail in the event of an appeal was set in a personal bond of €300. Gardaí fear someone will be killed as inter-family feud spirals out of control

Shots were fired at a house in Co Sligo over the weekend in the latest incident An inter-family feud is spreading in the west of the country, leading to fears someone will be killed. Shots were fired at a house in Co Sligo over the weekend in the latest incident linked to the dispute, in which a home occupied by an individual nicknamed 'The Farmer' was targeted. Sources say 'The Farmer' is not involved in the agricultural industry. No one was injured in the shotgun attack in Tubbercurry, but damage was caused to the property. The incident has led to fears that a feud that has been raging in Co Mayo, as well as in Co Galway, has led to the factions now going to war in Co Sligo. The shooting at the weekend is the fourth serious incident linked to the feud to be investigated by Sligo gardaí in recent weeks after a number of its participants moved to that county. The incidents included a criminal damage incident, threats to kill and an attempted arson attack. According to information obtained by the Sunday World, these crimes are part of 60 separate incidents being investigated by officers from the North Western Region in the last six years related to the feud. Stock image. Photo: Getty News in 90 seconds - 21st May 'Like many of these feuds, there is up to four individuals at the core – at the centre of this, but underneath them there are dozens of willing participants,' a source said. 'As this violence continues to spread now to a different county, there are genuine fears that someone could get killed – this is what happens when shots are let off and houses are set on fire. 'A lot of this agitation is spread on social media where so-called call-out videos are posted, which are simply just encouraging violence.' Sources have said there is a view among some gardaí that more needs to be done to deal with the feuding gangsters terrorising some parts of the west of the country. This is despite an operation last July in which officers targeted one of the gangs at the centre of the feud. Gardaí seized €75,000 in cash, three vehicles, a Tiguan SUV, an Audi A5 car and a Ford Transit van, as well as a 'large amount' of designer watches and multiple electronic devices in Galway. Two bank accounts, both within and outside the jurisdiction, with cash and cryptocurrency valued in excess of €990,000 were frozen under money-laundering legislation. The gang targeted in last summer's operation is considered to be the biggest drug-dealing mob in Co Mayo and also has 'significant influence on organised crime in Co Galway', a source said. Investigations have established that the Mayo-based gang have been sourcing their drugs from two bigger crime networks – one based in Sligo and the other in Limerick. Two families based in Mayo originally formed an alliance against two families from Galway city, but now more families have been dragged into the dispute – the origin of which is unclear. As part of the feud, there have been several shooting incidents, petrol and pipe-bomb attacks, ramming of cars and other violent incidents as well as multiple death threats, often issued on social media.
